Sure, it's technically breaking the rules. For one, it's not going to be an outburst of pure, inspired, original creativity. For the other, you're probably waaaaay too attached to the characters from the outset to just let them prance around the place willy-nilly. And yet ...
NaNoWriMo is all about using the suffering of other people to spur you onwards. And how can fanfic be exempt from that? If anything, writing fanfic uses the exact same premise; NaNo just compresses the suffering into a 30-day period.
So if you're planning on writing 50k of randomness from your favourite movie/tv/book/game/anime/manga/comic characters, post here - say hi! - and we can share the glee in breaking some rules.

PS. For the record, mine is going to be 50,000 words of Cloud and the gang angsting over politics. ... What? :P

I dunno, mine is technically fanfic, but it's set way far future, and most of the canon stuff is going to be part of 'history' for the characters. I'm writing it for tow main reasons: One) So much less stress than what I did last year. Two) A friend asked me for, "something friggin' huge," for her fanfic website.
I don't plan on using the disclaimer to boost wordcount, but there will be a disclaimer making sure I don't torque off the legal-minded at DC Comics.
Basic story is gonna be about the heir to the Green Lantern in the far flung future. With some twisty turny stuff.

I feel a little bit dirty writing fanfic for NaNo, but since most everything else I've written lately has been literary fiction...
I'm writing Saiyuki historical AU set during the Italian Renaissance. The idea came to me one night when I was pondering why my fandoms seem so into prostitue!AUs, and I thought to myself, "well, at least I've never seen anyone try to turn Nii into a hooker..." And then my brain had to figure out a way to make it work. So, yeah. Courtesan!Kenyuu. I must be smoking something. I have no idea where this is going, but I'm sure there will be Fun with Politics, copious smut, and probably a good deal of philosophy and snark.

Yay fanfic! I've never written any fanfic before, but I've recently become a Harry/Draco shipper (yes, that is Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy...so wrong and yet so right) and fallen in love with the idea of them as a couple, so I thought I'd have a go at writing my own! Anyone else writing slashfic?

Harry/Snape for the win!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a huge Remus/Sirius fan though. ^___^
Good luck to you! I sympathise; I've never written a FFVII fic before, so this November is going to be ... interesting.

Hi! I'm new. I've never been able to wright anything but fanfics so of course it's what I'm doing. Otherwise I'd get bored after word 50. :D I'm writing a PR fic (it's all I do) but it's so completely AU it barely resembles anything. And it's set on KO-35 2 years before the series begins.
And as far as I'm concerned, rules where meant to be broken. Why else would they be so much fun to break?

I feel so bad for breaking the rules. I'm rather new to writing, and I only just started publishing my first chaptered fanfic, so... uh, I'm not entirely confident about rushing in with a completely original story straight away on my first NaNo challenge. I do have a lot of original characters to work with and I'm engaging in some serious world-building, since the source material only gives the viewers so much to work with, but... no, no, I still feel bad.
I'm going to write for Digimon, or, more specifically, for the CGI movie from 2005, "Digital Monster X-Evolution". Sadly, no one writes fanfiction about it since apparently, the Digimon aren't interesting enough to be written about... that's the fandom's attitude, anyhow. In any case, if I manage, this fanfic will have romance, friendship, humor, some action, an attempt at a Cyrano de Bergerac-esque scheme, and a look on how X-Evolution's Digital World is doing after the whole Yggdrasil fiasco. I've already started rummaging through websites and books concerning Norse mythology for place names. With Yggdrasil and the three terminals (Urd, Verdandi and Skuld), I just can't help myself.

I love Harry/Draco! I did a fanfic last year with those two, but then my harddrive went to hell, and I can't find my backup disks, so I have no Word processing program on my computer, and I can't get to my story! I have like 10 or 12 chapters! :( Man, I better think of something to use for word processing or writing this November might prove difficult.

I use OpenOffice.org (its name, and the website! Very handy). I switched just a few days ago when MS Office 2007 turned out to be a complete ******. OO is really intuitive, opens .docs as well as the most common other PC text files, saves in .doc format if you want it to, and is just generally awesome.
For Mac users, there's NeoOffice. Does the same thing, but for Macs. Both programs are free and (I think) open source.

I did an original novel for Nano last year but this year I'm planning on writing a Mohinder/Sylar Heroes fic. I'm sure it will be full of bad characterisation and crazy plot holes and will be extremely inconsistant with canon, but I'm also pretty sure it will be fun to write it. :D

I'm not sure what I'm writing this year but the first year I did NaNo (2005) I wrote a fanfic. Well, I started one. I never finished. I made it to 20k before the end of November (stuff came up so I didn't have time to keep writing). I have since added about 7 chapters to it and it still isn't done at 40k words. It was fun to do and just as much work as an original idea. Keeping characters in character is hard. Plus mine was actually 2 separate stories intertwined and half the characters I made up myself.

I'm torn. I really, REALLY want to write urban fantasy (have a plot and everything), but my heart's staying firm with fanfic. GAH! I've never been one of those people who thinks writing fanfic is a waste of valuable pro-fic-writing time, but... well... I really want to write something original, dammit.
FTR, if I go with fanfic, it'll either be SPN Wincest, or J2. NC17, filthydirtysmut... as is my norm.
I dunno. I'm really serious about the urban fantasy idea, so I'm somewhat afraid of screwing it up with the tight NaNo timeframe. On the other hand, having a goal and deadline might be just what I need to get it going. :/

I'm torn too! I had this really good idea for an original a while back, but I've lost inspiration in it. I have two fanfics I could work (a Harry/Draco that I've been working on forever, and a new puzzleshippy Yu-Gi-Oh story) as well as a new idea for a Stargate SG-1/Yu-Gi-Oh crossover. I know the readers of my Harry/Draco story would be very pleased if I work on it. But I still haven't decided if I'm doing fanfic or original writing for NaNo.

Well, *technically* it's slashfic, but in a weird futuristic, dystopian, urban fantasy, political satire kinda way.
Probably.
Something like that.
I started it for NaNo last year, and my goal is to finish it this year, so while I'm not technically doing NaNo this year (November is exam time, and I don't want to mess them up), although who knows how much I'll write during November anyway, I'll still be around on the boards, cheering people on and trying to balance work, uni and writing without going mad. XD

Urban fantasy with Sam and Dean. It's clearly a win/win! And an S/D.
Or you could do urban fantasy with Jensen and Jared. AU! Subtecks!
And hey, if it goes the other way, it's not so difficult to rename characters and change a few details ... or completely rewrite it after NaNo. It'll be good for the soul to have pretty boys doing the urban fantasising. ^_^

If you're really serious about the urban fantasy idea, then you're probably right about wanting to write it when you have more time to focus properly on getting everything right - you'll just have to make sure you're still disaplined enough to write it.
Of course, my advice should probably be ignored seeing as I'm just thrilled at the very mention of 50k words of Wincest or J2 smut. ;)

Well if you write fanfic during NOT NaNoWriMo, than maybe you should give the other story a try. Of course, if you really want it to be good, you're going to have to be prepared to edit later. I for one, hate going back and editing things but if you don't mind, Id go for the urban fantasy. You still have a month but my advice is, if you have a solid idea, don't let it go to waste. Just my opinion though. Good luck making a decision.

I had this up before the re-do of the site (which looks fantastic, by the way!) but I'll say it again.
I think there's a lot to be said for fanfiction and its writers. It's an understated art. Besides having to come up with your own plausible storyline, you have to actually incorporate someone else's characters, world, and rules into it. You can't just sit down one day and say, "Hey, I think I want to write a fanfic today." Not if you want to write a REAL fanfic, anyway. And, of course, this is my opinion, but I think in many ways, writing fanfiction is more exercise than writing OF, only because you've got the constraints that writing with someone else's rules offers.
That being said, I think there's a lot to say for both original fiction and fanfiction...I've done both, and while I prefer fanfiction, OF has a lot of its own challenges and rewards. But this year, I'm sticking to my Supernatural fanfics!
Party!

I'm doing fanfic again this year. It's a Naruto AU written because I really want to see/read about Naruto characters playing hockey. XD (Is my Canadian showing? <_<) I don't know if I'm going to pair anyone up yet, as I don't even really have a plot. XD
One other thing I want to say is that writing fanfiction is not breaking the rules. NaNoWriMo defines a novel as a "lengthy work of fiction", so therefore fanfiction qualifies and is breaking neither the letter nor spirit of the rules. ^_^

I was always under the impression that fanfic wasn't technically breaking the rules. (See FAQ topic here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/402678 )
I did one for my first year (some weird Yuugiou murder mystery horror thing back in 2004), and because I REALLY want to get cracking on this one series of mine (which I started before summer break but then left in the dust once school was out--I'm not even actually done with the first "episode"/fic!), I'm doing it again.
Sort of.
See, I'm usually not a big fan of original characters. But for SOME strange reason, I made up an AU!Tenth Doctor and a companion for Doctor Who taking place after an AU ending to "Parting of the Ways". The first fic (or episode--I'll regard most fics in terms of episodes for this series, as that's what it's supposed to be) details this, the 2nd is supposed to be where he meets Adonna Trusten, and this...well, I suppose it's going to be their first adventure in the TARDIS! (Gives me more chance to add in useless details about the characters and about the Whoniverse, heh.) It's fanfiction, sure, but it's a complete rewrite of Series 2.
I don't...have a plot yet, but I never do except for something VERY vague. :D; So no worries, I always make it up as I go.

I was gonna say fanfiction is allowed, but someone beat me to it!
I'm not planning on doing a fic for my NaNo (I can barely hold a fic for more than 10 chapters, much less 50k words), but my current NaNo is an idea I've had swirling in my head as an AU for a while now. Sleep deprivation, ten hours of Spider Solitaire, strep throat, and lack of medicine can do that to you! Anyway, I refitted the idea to original fiction, although many of the characters have a lot of similarities to their original counterparts.
If anyone's wondering, it was an AU fic for Danny Phantom. Danny Phantom is my favorite cartoon of all time, haha.
