Hi there!

I have a little problem. I can't find the right genre for my story.
It plays in 1933-42 and so, it could be historical fiction. Anyway it comprises also some fantasy elements. And, to make the problem still harder, it will play in the future, too.

So what is it? ^^
Mainstream Fiction? XYZ-Fiction?
Oh dear, there are so many kinds of fictions...Could you help me to find a way out, please? :-)

Regards
Marion

I'd say it was sci-fi/fantasy for sure.

Alternate history/fantasy?
Just go with whatever you feel is most appropriate.
If you feel it's more fantasy, it's fantasy. If you feel it's more historic, it's historic. If you think it's more literary...
Who says it has to be just one?

I agree about the why do we have to choose one!!

Mine is cross-genre too. It's primarily literary fiction (though I guess 2/3 of it can fit into Historical Fiction...ugh...a THIRD category!!), but it definitely crosses over into Religion/Spirituality. I'm not using that as its primary one though because it's not JUST about that and it's definitely not like the "Left Behind" series. It just centers around a cathedral (in various stages of its life) and a soul in three different journeys. Oh, and one of the characters is an Episcopal priest. :)

I'm just calling mine Literary Fiction to make it easier.

Maybe speculative fiction? That is sometimes used as a blanket term for science fiction, fantasy, alternate history etc.

Science fiction/fantasy would work too.

Instead of outright fantasy, there's also the option of "Magical Realism" - in which magical elements appear in an otherwise realistic setting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_realism), though I'm not sure if that's an option NaNoWriMo has at the moment.

For Nano purposes, you'll be visiting all three forums ... historical, sci-fi, and fantasy ... with questions, most likely.

Go with speculative fiction for now as a label, and see what element stands out strongest at the end before you give it a definitive label.

Lots of luck!

Thank you very much!
Yes, a good idea. I will write the story and see, what it means, what genre it will be at last ^^
Anyway, it is a good reason to read and write in many different forums here.

Thank you for the food for thought :-)
And good luck everybody!

Science fiction/fantasy is what comes to mind first but it depends on which YOU feel is most important. If historical fiction is what you're main focus is it definately could count as such.
