No Plot? No Problem! talks about writing totems; how you wear a funny hat or some other thing to get you in the mood for writing, or to remind yourself of the commitment. Are you doing anything like that?

Personally, I have this ring that I wear on the middle finger of my left hand:

It has roman numerals one through twelve on it, to remind me of time. During NaNoWriMo, I'm going to switch it to the middle finger on my right hand, which is the hand that I write with. Call it a very elaborate string around my finger.

I have a sweater I got from an English teacher a very long time ago {it still fits me =-)}, a capuchin named Orson (after Orson Scott Card and his novel about a monkey "Lovelock") and a polar bear that I named Phil after Philip Pullman. If you've read these authors, you'll know why.

What's so special about it? Just sentimental value, or is there a guilt monkey pen in it?

I spend a lot of time in front of a keyboard, so I wanted to distinguish my normal computer time from my NaNo time (something I had a big problem with in past years). Therefore, I have ordered a pair of fancy satin opera gloves--the kind that make your arms feel worth a million bucks--and I'm going to wear them whenever I'm writing. I hope that they will serve as a reminder that I should be writing and not checking email, playing Sims, shopping on eBay, etc.

Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light. -- Joseph Pulitzer

I bought a pair of boxer shorts last summer with Snoopy sitting on his doghouse typing away. I've been saving them for November. I'm also thinking of getting a hat of something else that is easier to put on and take off when I switch to surfing the net and other distractions.
