Super Fabulous Write-ins of Ultimate Greatness (UPDATED - Nov. 2)

The Baty Dictionary of Nanowrimo Terms defines a “write-in” as a communal gathering of persons in pursuit of literary creation in a localized environment where parallel creative stimulation occurs at a maximum or minimum rate of efficiency dependant upon the variable of social verbal interactive exchanges.

Translation, a write-in is where participants of Nanowrimo can get together and be in a constructive environment to work on your novels. These write-ins often offer great food, insightful ML-support, fun challenges, and word-count boosting challenges. Everyone is welcome no matter how you write your novel, be it laptop, Neo, Palm Pilot, good old pen and paper or even with sticks and leaves (although not recommended!).

So I encourage all of you to try and make it out to as many of these events as you can. If you have any questions about write-ins or locations or anything else, feel free to ask any of the ML’s through our email (ottawa_on @ nanowrimo . org) or send us a quick private message or post here! There are lots of ways to get more information.

Other Groups and Meetups

If you or your group arrange another NaNo-related event, let us know the details. We'll add your event to the Local Events calendar and praise your awesomeness. The MLs will try to attend your events if we're free.

Safety, Accessibility, and Other Such Stuff

Need a bus buddy or parking escort? Parent concerned about your safety? Someone bothering you at events?

Roll-Call (aka WELCOME BACK OTTAWA WRIMOS!)

Hey everyone!

Welcome back to another AMAZING year of NaNoWriMo. To all of the new writers joining us this year, I want to say Welcome, and we're excited to meet you and hear from you and freak out about writing novels with you! To the veterans who are returning for yet another year: I hope you had a fantastic year, and we can't wait to see you again!

So, this thread will be for ROLL CALL! Please, come and introduce yourself. Post your name, how many years you've done NaNo, your favorite ice cream flavor, and a small blurb about your novel, or whatever else you think!

For those of you who are new, and ML is a Municipal Liaison. Ottawa Region has THREE this year, so keep an eye on this thread, I'm sure they'll pop in to introduce themselves soon! We're here to answer any questions you have (feel free to email us, ottawa_on@nanowrimo.org), to prod you along, to set up fun events like write-ins and parties, and generally to post in the forums about a million times a day, so you have something to procrastinate your word count with :D!

Anyways, I'll get this started.

I'm Michelle, and this will be my SIXTH year to do NaNo (and hopefully my sixth win, fingers crossed!). It's also my third year to ML in Ottawa, and I'm jumping with excitement at returning! I'm 21, and a university student in English and Medieval Studies at uOttawa. Also, I think nothing is better than Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Especially the brownie one.

What about you?
Kick-off Party! Time, date, location, the works:

Hi everyone! I'm the lucky ML who gets to give you the details about our rockin' kick-off party for NaNoWriMo 2007!

For those of you who are new to NaNo, the kick-off party is our annual, pre-November get-together where we can all meet face-to-face to plan, chat, and eat some really great food.

Last year, as some of you may remember, we had an issue with noise at out venue. This year, though, we're taking over a private room, so we can be as loud and excited as we want!

So, the info:

When: Sunday, October 28, 2007, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM
Where: The Royal Oak Pub, 161 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa
We will be in the basement of the pub, so when you come in, turn immediately towards your right and descend into our Cave Of Awesomeness.

Getting there: If you're driving, well, I can't really help you. I don't drive! But you can mapquest the address above, and it's really quite easy to find. Parking will be limited, so you might want to come a bit early to try to find a spot.

If you're taking the OC Transpo, you'll be able to take any major Transitway bus (basically anything except the 101/102). Get off at Laurier Stop and walk about two blocks east.

HEY LOOK, A MAP! (man, I'm so on top of these things this year!) The Laurier bus stop is that little red square, and the Royal Oak is the letter "A".

If you have any questions about how to get there, feel free to ask, and we'll help you out as best we can!

**PLEASE BE AWARE!!!**

The kick-off party is in a pub. However, it is an ALL AGES EVENT. This means that, if you plan to have an alcoholic drink, you must be ready to produce and ID upon request.

If you're a minor and plan to be joining us, we definitely welcome you! Please let us know, and parents who have any questions can contact the MLs at ottawa_on@nanowrimo.org.

We hope to see you all there!

[off topic] Sightseeing in Ottawa?

I'm in Ottawa (well, Kanata) on a business trip. Any tips on sights to see and things to do while I'm in town?

Thanks,

--Tim

Update
Lee-Anne graciously took me on a fun tour of Ottawa; and I also had an opportunity to meet several members of the Ottawa region at one of their continuing write-ins. We even recorded the singing of the Illinois::Naperville song (fulfilling some of the terms of the 2007 wordwar, though Lee-Anne hasn't sent me the recording yet). Thank you, Lee-Anne and the members of your region--I really appreciated your hospitality! You have a beautiful city and a wonderful core group.

Regional Word War Challenge (!) to Ontario::Ottawa from Illinois::Naperville!!!

(aside: discouraging note: one has to be affiliated with a region to post a new topic in it!)

(posted in Ontario::Ottawa's forum and also in Illinois::Naperville's)

2005: Toronto

2006: Montreal

2007: ???

That's what we in Illinois::Naperville had been wondering. Which region would we challenge, which region (perhaps again in Canada) might be comparably sized and motivated for word war. Fortunately, diurnal_lee and I have been ML-friends the last couple of years, so when I saw that our total affiliated regional wordcounts were so similar, we exchanged some nanomails.

So now I've come to officially throw down the gauntlet to mighty Ottawa for 2007's challenge. I even put together this special page with special graphs to accommodate rolling up the affiliated wordcounts (and filling any gaps in the wordcount history entries) to show the compared Total Affiliated regional Wordcount comparison.

So here are the proposed terms (taken from http://naperwrimo.org/wordwar2007/):

NewMexicoKid wrote:

As of the date of challenge (11 Nov), Naperville leads Ottawa in Total Region-Homed regional Wordcount but trails Ottawa in Total Affiliated regional Wordcount. Ottawa also slightly trails Naperville in Average Region-Homed Wordcount.

The Challenge: whichever region defeats the other will have its regional song sung by the defeated region at its TGIO (winning region is also welcome to reciprocate just for fun); this song will be recorded and posted in the winning region's nanowrimo forum. Naperville's regional song is Typin' Away Again Near Dear Ol' Naperville (and there is even a Karafun karaoke file available).

Options:

Total Affiliated Wordcount (a close stat but not specifically region-homed); Note!: this option is somewhat problematic in that it is easiest to track the other region by affiliating with it (which then changes the stat!) - Naperville currently lags 165.2 words per affiliated member

Total Region-Homed Wordcount (not quite as close but still interesting) - Ottawa lags by 628.7 words per region-homed member

Average Region-Homed Wordcount (very close AND region-homed) - Ottawa lags by 419.3 words per region-homed member

Which option do you prefer? All of the gaps are, I think, quite achievable by either side.

--Tim

TGIO Party and Round-up things!

Hello hello!

It's that time of year again! Novels are written and saved and immediately forgotten about. Fingers ache after a frantic month of typing. Eyeballs burn from staring at tiny scribbled words or blinking cursors for too long. And stomachs growl from a steady thirty days of junk food and coffee.

So we bring you the TGIO PARTY 2007! The TGIO Party (Thank Goodness It's Over) will take place this coming weekend, snow or shine, and we hope to see all of you there!

When: Saturday, December 8, 2007 at 3:00 PM
Where: Kelsey's Restaurant at South Keys (2206 Bank Street, Ottawa)
Details: We'll have two massive tables set up for us for a late-lunch/early-dinner party. If you plan to bus, it's a simple ride: just take the 97 to South Keys, hop off there and walk around the Walmart and you'll see the restaurant off to your left. There's plenty of parking for those of you who drive, too! We have the tables from 3:00 to about 5:00 (when they start to get super busy for dinner rush, hence us coming early).

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I cannot stress this enough: RSVP if you plan to attend! If you're not sure that you'll be making it, let us know that, too. The restaurant would like a more accurate head count closer to the date, just in case we have more people coming than I anticipated. You can reply directly to this email, or shoot one off to ottawa_on@nanowrimo.org. If you have any questions, please let us know!

A few other round-up things:

CONGRATULATIONS TO SANDRA! She won our MOST OFTEN AT THE WRITE-INS award (sorry, the title isn't very snappy, I'll come up with a better one before Saturday!), having come to more write-ins than even some of the MLs!

I still don't know who won the REGION WAR competitions... from the looks of it we TOTALLY DEFEATED Washington DC (my inner American weeps at this, but oh well :D!), but lost by a thin thin margin to Naperville. More details on that will be available on Saturday.

Finally, a reminder to all that even though November is over, the write-ins are not! Head on over to WriMoFusion (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wrimofusion), where you'll find information on the once-a-month gatherings here in the Ottawa area!

That's all for now, hope to see you all on Saturday!

Michelle (and Lee-Anne and Kay)
Local Write-Ins Throughout the Year

You've scribbled yourself a novel in thirty days, and maybe along the way you've discovered that writing with other people around really gets you going. Now what? If you're interested in keeping up the write-in habit year round, check out these local groups:

Wrimofusion
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wrimofusion
We've been meeting for write-ins roughly once a month for the last year. Usually last-ish Sunday of the month at the World Exchange food court. Join the mailing list to join the madness. (Well, except that YahooGroups seems to be down at the moment. Is there a Facebook group?)

Pen & Paper Writing Group
http://www.biblioottawalibrary.ca/events/eventalph_title/eventdetail_e.c...
Two hour write-in followed by a share-and-feedback hour. Drop-in Thursdays 10am-1pm, at Nepean Centrepointe Library.

Do you know of another local group that gets together to write? Add them here!

----------
To Include In Your NaNovel!

As decided by popular vote at tonight's kick-off party, we now have a new THING TO INCLUDE IN YOUR NANOVEL for 2007!

For those of you who are new, we have a little challenge within our region every year, where you try to include a random thing into your novel somehow. Two years ago it was "a door to nowhere", which ended up being really fun to write.

There aren't any rules or anything. You're not required to write it into your novel, nor are you required to stick with the exact prompt, should you want to include it. It's just for fun!

Anyways, this year's item is:

"A small left over pie gone fuzzy".

Enjoy!!

Q: Once you validate, can you still "update" if you add to your word count? Or should you wait till the very end to validate if you want to keep adding?
Special Thanks to all those who were "Lovers, not writers"

I have no idea if he'll get a chance to see this or not but I wanted to put it in writing anyway. I wanted to say thank you to my very supportive husband who has encouraged me through the entire month and to my surprise has planned a wonderful victory celebration for me tonight including a wonderful homemade dinner and flowers.

I know I wouldn't have been able to get through the month without him and it means the world that he believes so much in me. So to my husband, and all the other wonderfully supportive significant others, I send a very heartfelt thank you.

PS - You know how I said last night after finally hitting my 50,000 words that I was going to sleep for three days ... I was writing again at 8:35 AM this morning. No one told me this would be so addictive!
Regional Word War Challenge (2) US Capital Vs Canadian Capital

Hey everyone!

{This message is being cross posted in the Ottawa and Washington forums.}

Yesterday, I received a challenge from Washington DC. The capital of America would like to take the capital of Canada on in a powerful duel of writing.

We have responded with out terms and are waiting for a response from Chuck.

These are the terms that we have proposed:

We would like to propose the challenge as being two-part.
1) Total overall affiliated wordcourt
2) Average wordcourt per affiliated member

If we win, we want you to send us an mp3 file of your region singing our national anthem.

On the Word Count Scoreboard:

United States::District of Columbia
Total words: 1,512,850 (ranked 59 overall)
Average words: 11,637 (ranked 206 overall)

Canada::Ontario::Ottawa
Total words: 1,494,816 (ranked 62 overall)
Average words: 13,466 (ranked 89 overall)

So DC is winning in overall word count but Ottawa is winning in average words! So far the competition is a tie!
22hrs and counting!

We can do it! We've got just under 23h left to get some more words in. For those who are still heading towards 50 000, keep going! You can do miracles in 22hrs, bribe your muse and lock yourself in a closet (or wherever you choose to write), hunker down and know that you can do it!

For those who have passed the 50k mark, congratulations and welcome to the purple bar club!

We were, as of the last time the stats page was updated, ahead of Naperville by a small margin. Something that they have proven they can close. Since I know none of us want to have to sing there song, and we don't want to add another win to the two they already have out of Canada, add a few more words. It doesn't matter if it's 50 or 5000, but pad that wordcount. You know you have some scene that's just screaming for a food fight (got to get the fuzzy peach pie in somewhere, right?) or have a character run off on a monologue. Add that extra scene that doesn't really fit, but you want to write it anyways.

Every little bit helps now that we're down to crunch time!

Are you with me?
Final Ten Days Pep Talk

Okay. It’s crunch time. That means it is time for a pep talk. There are ten days left in NaNoWriMo (including today). So, in the interest of getting as many people as possible to the finish line, I’ve got some statistics.

With ten days to go, and specific starting word counts, the number of hours required to reach 50,000 words by the deadline are as follows:

Starting from scratch
(Requires 5,000 words per day)
Writing Speed / Total Hours / Hours per Day
10 WPM / 84 / 9
20 WPM / 42 / 5
30 WPM / 28 / 3
40 WPM / 21 / 3
50 WPM / 17 / 2
60 WPM / 14 / 2

Starting from 10,000
(Requires 4,000 words per day)
Writing Speed / Total Hours / Hours per Day
10 WPM / 67 / 7
20 WPM / 34 / 4
30 WPM / 23 / 3
40 WPM / 17 / 2
50 WPM / 14 / 2
60 WPM / 12 / 2

Starting from 20,000
(Requires 3,000 words per day)
Writing Speed / Total Hours / Hours per Day
10 WPM / 50 / 5
20 WPM / 25 / 3
30 WPM / 17 / 2
40 WPM / 13 / 2
50 WPM / 10 / 1
60 WPM / 9 / 1

Starting from 30,000
Who are you kidding? You’ll never make it to 50K. Wait! You did! Well, congratulations. That’s great. Now go add to your novel. I’m sure there are scenes you could flesh out. Add some Joseph Conrad insomnia-curing description. Another laser tag match or a one-night stand would really increase your word count. Why just settle for making it to 50K? Keep going and be the over-achiever you always wanted to be.

Even if we don’t all make it to 50,000, every word we write will help the Ottawa region beat both Washington DC and Naperville. There is no way we want to sing the Naperville song. Those who were at the Marathon Write-in will vouch for the fact it is much, much worse than Muskrat Love. Don't throw things at me. We all know that was one bad song. Maybe even worse than multiple renditions of Feelings.

All that said, I believe in each and every one of you. If this is what you truly want, you will achieve your goals. Yes, 50,000 words in 30 days is a great thing; but achieving your goals is even greater.

Happy noveling.

BTW, sorry for the poor formatting.

Today's episode of the Editor's Choice podcast on CBC.ca tackles Nanowrimo, talking to two MLs for Edmonton. They cover everything from what it's about, to the idea of mass write-ins. Quite a good coverage.

Regional Word Challenge Warning / Reminder

Hey all,

Just a quick reminder to everyone here to make sure you are all Home-Regioned for Ottawa. It's not enough to just "affiliate" - you actually need to set your Home Region to Ottawa for your thousands of delicious words to be counted in the Ottawa Regional challenges against Naperville and Washington DC.

Good luck and keep adding to those word counts (yes, even those who are already winners!)
To everyone who wondered about the cinnamon crumb cake...

the name of the brand is KRUSTEAZ Cinnamon Crumb Cake, and I bought it as a 3-pack from Costco in Pointe-Claire, QC about a month ago. It comes with everything you need to make the cake (including icing, which I left off) and all you need to add are water and 1 egg.

It's from the US, btw.
Marathon Write-In! Get your write on!

MARATHON WRITE-IN

The write-in will run from 11am until about 9 or 10pm (ish) on Saturday, November 17, 2007.

For our marathon write-in this year, we have rented out the penthouse of an apartment building in the west-end. Will have plenty of room, outlets, and comfortable seating. The room cost us $40 for the rental. We will be accepting donations if anyone is willing to help chip in for the cost. Any donations received over and above the cost of the rental will be donated to the Office of Light and Letters in the Ottawa area's name. At the end of the night, we will let you all know how much we have received.

The marathon will occur at 3100 Carling Avenue. This is located at the intersection of Carling Avenue and Bayshore Drive, right beside the Coliseum movie theatres.

See this map!

http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=3100+...

The best route by bus is taking anything to the Bayshore Shopping Centre (either the 97 or 96). From Bayshore you can either walk for ten minutes or take a bus from the shopping center (either the 85 or 166 go from the mall to right beside the apartment building).

There is also plenty of visitor's parking in the front of the building for people who are driving.

At the front door, use the buzzer to ring up to the Penthouse Party Room to be let into the building. The buzzer number is on the directory at the front door.

Please bring your own snacks or treats. There are plenty of sources of food nearby. There is a Tim Horton's within five minutes of walking. Also if you are coming from the mall, you can stop there are get something for yourself if needed (might I suggest the mini-Zeller's grocery). We can also order some pizza or something else for supper if anyone is interested. Please bring cash if you plan on ordering anything for yourself or chipping in for a group order.

Seeing as we are right next to a movie theatre, we will also use this opportunity to see a movie in the evening too, for those who are interested. At 8pm, we will have a vote for what movie we want to go see.

HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE THERE.

Please post if you are planning to come, just so we have an idea how many to expect! Or post any questions, etc.

Give Me the Time of Day

So, I went to the Pen & Paper Writing Group meeting yesterday morning and really enjoyed it. They spend the first two hours writing. In the third hour, participants may choose to share some of what they've written, while others may comment.

Now, when I nano, I write fast and without censoring anything; the bulk of words on the page are total crap of the draftiest draft imaginable. I have zero interest in sharing this dreck with anyone, so I was sort of iffy about that third "sharing" hour cutting into my writing time.

As it turned out, I banged out 3917 words in the first two hours, which is almost double the rate that I manage at afternoon or evening write-ins. I'm reminded that time of day can make a difference, and I plan to experiment with morning writing again this weekend.

Anyone else notice that they're more productive or creative at particular times of day?
