I need you guys to tell me your nightmares. My main character has nightmare issues so I need to make them as realistic as possible and real nightmares would be realistic.

Being chased through a city in the dead of night by gargoyles. I'm pretty sure their base was in the Disney version of gargoyles but there were a lot freakier. I mean, chasing people (me and a few friends) down to kill them and ripping doors off hinges to get at us. I'm still not sure what my subconscious was thinking then...

I had a nightmare while I was working at an amusement park during the summer that there was an alien zombie virus going around, and I was being chased around the park by my zombified coworkers and zombie tourists. Also, the alien zombies were called "stalkers." Don't ask me why, they just were. If their flesh touched your flesh, even if it was pinky toe to pinky toe, you turned into one of them. They had a penchant for being grabby too, so eventually I ended up being the only non-zombie, and I was running around with a baseball bat (don't ask me how I got it, it was a dream after all) and I had to kill them before they killed me, because for some reason turning me into a zombie wasn't good enough, they had to rip me limb from limb or something. They were all green and rotting and disgusting looking, too, and they shambled around saying the same phrase over and over, in unison, in the creepiest voices imaginable. I think it was something like "the stalkers will stalk until the mother returns." I'm pretty sure they meant mothership, but what can you expect from zombies?

Hey, for me it was pretty damn terrifying. It's one of those "you had to be there" things, really.

Umm.....I've got a lot of other ones, I'm sure, but most of my dreams actually follow a story line of some sort, so I'm probably not your best bet for a normal, scary nightmare.

I had three last night (and tell me which one of them doesn't belong with the others ;).

* I was attending a party where the hosts were systematically murdering teenage girls.
* It was an end-of-the-world scenario where supplies were about to be drastically limited and it was going to be everyone for themselves. My family and I were rushing to fill every empty container in the house with water so we'd have it to drink before the plumbing system went to hell.
* I was dating Jim from "The Office" and he wanted to meet later that day; based on his tone and wording, I was sure he was getting ready to dump me. Hey, rejection nightmares are a real thing! :)

I've had very few nightmares since becoming an adult, but I had them all the time as a child. Here are a few:

~Being surrounded in blackness, the only thing visible being me, my bed, and a pair of disembodied hands coming to tickle me (not the good, fun kind of tickle, but scary, painful, relentless tickle).

~Again with the blackness, only this time it's my mother creeping up over the end of the bed with a pair of big silver shears and an evil look on her face. I never did find out what she was going to cut with those.

~Getting ganged up on by the McDonald's characters (Mayor McCheese, the Hamburglar, etc.) and having Grimace inform me that if I dared wake up from the dream, they would wait until I fell asleep again and kill me.

I only remember a couple of nightmares I've had within the last several years. One was semi-post-apocalyptic about an invasion of large, insectile aliens (like giant brown praying mantises, really) that my friends and I fought off with flamethrowers and escaped in a retro-fitted ice cream truck, and the only part of the other one I remember is being driven down Walker Road and looking out of the rear window to see a chainsaw-wielding maniac attacking people, and him looking up just in time to catch sight of me.

The McDonalds character dream is the scariest thing I've heard in a long time. I'm at work in a well lit room and it sent a chill down my spine.

I have nightmares where something is happening (there's a ghost in the house, someone is stalking me) and no one believes me. I'm half out of my mind with fear and everyone thinks it's my imagination, they usually end with me in tears begging my husband to believe me and he keeps telling me it's in my head.

My sister had a dream when she was a kid about being chased by "wolves in bubbles". About half a dozen full size wolves with glowing eyes (each wolf had a different colour eyes) were inside these huge bubbles and running flat out after her.
I think the bubbles were supposed to be some kind of magical protection. She was afraid of that dream for years. If I remember right, she woke up screaming and crying.

A friend of mine in high school had a pretty terrifying recurring dream. She'd be chased around a park at night by a rapist, and every time the dream ended with her being raped and killed. The first night she had it, her sister had the same dream at the same time, which of course makes it even worse.

I think the dreams stopped after she'd had the dream once again, but managed to escape the rapist. Interesting, no?

A few years ago, I had a nightmare that REALLY freaked me out. At first I was sitting on a pew in a church. In the front of me was a huge, complex machine. Apparently, a zombie virus was spreading and the only was you could tell zombie bodies that would rise from normal human bodies was to cut off the head and put it in this machine. A priest put a "wax" head into the machine to show how it worked and kept saying "this isn't real, its only a demonstation." Only, I didn't believe him, so I got up and walked slowly towards a patch of "paint" meant to look like blood. When I touched it, it was warm and wet and definitely real. I started to scream. The rest of my dream was a series of montage like images of people I knew being ripped apart and eaten by zombies.

Oh, and I also had a dream where I was being chased by a Mcdonalds character.

I think the worst one was one where I was in a slaughterhouse. And they were sending pigs in on a conveyor and they were just piling them on top of each other and I slipped or something and got caught in underneath the pigs. And I couldn't free myself from underneath them. And they had human faces and were just laughing at me. Blood was everywhere and I could hear the screams from the other side of this huge metal door which would open, then close, then kill them. There was a doctor there, I remember that. I escaped just before they were taken in and killed. It was so bloody . The doctor was convincing me to take an exam and that I should, because I hadn't been to the doctor in a while. So, the door opened up and they were hosing off the blood on the floor and they dragged me in, forced me on ground a nd used these nasty surgical supplies to cut me up. Before I woke up, I remeber I was just screaming.

god that night sucked.

I have 2.

The first is a recurring one from childhood, very abstract, almost comical. I call it:

The Queen on the Hill

I am a young street urchin, flat cap and all, running the streets of a small Lancashire mining village with other similar urchins. We are collecting giant matches -- you know the type, with a red tip. Overlooking the small town is a large hill, and upon that hill a Giant Queen sits atop a throne. At the beginning of the dream the match collecting means nothing, just a game, but soon we realize that if we do not collect enough matches the Queen will push a button upon her throne and destroy the world.

The dream always ended as I, the last in line, knelt at the Giant Queen's feet, the last match stretched out above my body. As I look up, I see the Giant Queen smiling, her finger pressing the button.

That was usually when I woke up.

The 2nd, I call:

Blood in the Snow

The dream begins with me in the snow, cold, shivering. I kneel and see just below the pristine white surface a color showing through. I dig down and in terrible shock find that my hands are covered in blood. Soon after I realize that I am hunting a vampire in this icty white land. The dream continues until I find a trail of blood in the snow. I follow the trail and the dream ends where I find the vampire and aim my rifle (that has appeared from nowhere) at the Vampire's head. Through the scope I see it is too late. The vampire has a young girl in his arms, and just as I wake, the vampire sinks his teeth into the girl's neck.

The worst are the ones that you see your family members dead in.

I also had this dream in this gymnastics gym in this converted airplane hanger (I took gymnastic classes in the place when I was younger). There were these giant creepy dolls, like the porcelain ones that look real in those frilly dresses. They were walking around killing people.

Both of these were a few years back, but I still remember them fairly clearly. I don't dream all that often, so it's fairly notable when I do, and nightmares are (blessedly) rarer still. These are just the ones that catch my attention:

1.) I was in my best friend's neighborhood, and we were attending a house party of a mutual acquaintance of ours. Times were great for the first few hours (which flew by like minutes, in the way of most dreams), but then I started getting this gut feeling that something was about to go horribly wrong--that a demon was going to somehow show up and turn the place into a chop-shop of blood and gore. I started to make my way to the door, but people kept trying to get me to stay, telling me I was just feeling weird when I told them my suspicions. I redoubled my efforts when the screaming from three floors below started, and once I heard a guttural roar, I grabbed my best friend (who I'd been hauling behind me like a two year old with a toy wagon) by her arm and bodily chucked her out the nearest window into a nearby pile of hay. I tried to jump out afterward, but the window repaired itself, and wouldn't break for anything when I tried to escape. As my best friend looked up at me, screaming, I heard breathing behind me. When I turned around to look, I picked up a crowbar that (somehow) had been on the windowsill, and brought it up to defend myself.

Against a demon. A demon that was no less than six times my size in height and girth, and it was all muscle. Boy was I a gutsy little thing.

2.) Another haunted house...but this time, it's at night, and I'm alone. There's a thunderstorm outside, and with each flash, I see the dead body of some celebrity figure, some merely shot or stabbed while others were horrifically mutilated. I'm running through the house trying to find either a phone or a way out, and I come to a room where the door opens onto complete blackness. A narrarator's voice jumps out of nowhere, and starts rambling about "A lonely camera catches the scene, each body the perfect frame..." (I didn't catch the rest, sorry), and my field of vision pans down to see a trail of blood on the floor with each flash of lightning...leading next to a camera right next to the door. I go to reach for it, and something comes around the corner. I look up, and I see a hooded figure standing over me. From the hood pops a skull as the figure crashes down toward my face, mouth open to eat me head first. The teeth were past my nose when I woke up.

3.) I was out on a class field trip, and a twister hit. I was able to help everyone to safety, and originally thought I had joined them...but at some point, I found myself attending my own funeral. It was interspersed with shots of lightning against a blackish green sky, with the wind occasionally picking up, and then there was a full moon rising out of clouds and a bunch of people wondering what to do now. When the view panned back to my funeral (I was sitting toward the back, but I could hear the music and see all the memorials put up for me), I started to feel myself floating on the music up and over the crowd. For some odd reason, though the rest of the dream didn't disturb me much, I felt myself incredibly saddened that my death had hurt all these people, and that there was nothing I could do to ease their pain as I started floating through the ceiling and far away.

Yeah, my husband had to physically wake me from that one. Freaked him out a bit.

I hope that helps! My MC says she's also happy to provide purely fictional ideas, as Nightmare isn't just a dream type...it's her job description. ;)

Thanks you guys have given me a lot of ideas and stuff I want to use but it just has too much of it's own plot. I'm really looking for those trippy dreams that scare you to death but you don't know why. And anything with a scarecrow will go great with the plot. keep the nightmares coming.

this one isn't really horrifying, just plain creepy

Im in this old town and there's this road at the end of the town that goes up a slope, an off-road kind of thing. The road enters some kind of dark place which i think is a forest.
On the side of that road (im not very sure about the location) is a house that reminds me of those houses in the tom sawyer stories with a porch and some kind of a little field on front.
On the porch sits an old man smoking some pipe. On the field are some shoots growing and then suddenly, I see a skeleton coming down from the forest along the off-road and stops by the house which made the shoots tremble. Oh, and there are townspeople with weird faces walking by as if nothing strange is happening.
Then the skeleton starts tilling the land and does some kind of a jig while he does it. At one point, he even sang although I forgot how it sounded.
The dream's kinda cloudy looking and a lot of things happened besides that like the moving tree for example but i forgot most of the details. I usually forget most of my dreams anyway.

One nightmare I had while I was living in a house I was convinced inhabited a ghost. The dream had nothing to do with ghosts, but the eeriness of the house was what gave me nightmares all night every night for a year after my brother moved away.
SO anyways...
I'm walking past my basement door and I hear a knocking sound. It's night in the dream, so I'm kind of scared that someone's at the back door (which we had to use as the front door because the front door was frozen shut). I look through the peep hole and it's just blackness, so I go stand back in front of the basement door. I hear knocking again, and I have to call out, "Who's there?" really loud because I'm alone in the house and yelling makes things less frightening. Nobody answers, but then I hear this scratching sound at the base of the basement door. For some reason, I want to open it, even though I don't own any pets or anything that would want to get out of the basement. I hold my hand out to the handle and hesitate as the scratching gets faster and I hear something like trickling water behind the door. I touch the doorhandle, my hand fully pressed against it and it turns out to be searing hot, and my hand is melting to it. In the violent thrashing to pull away, I turn the doorhandle and the door bursts open, throwing me back against the wall. Boiling blood gushes through the door's opening, rising like water in a flood. Then I woke up.
It's kind of more eerie considering I had this nightmare the night after it happened... The doorhandle wasn't hot and there was no blood in the basement, though. The ghost upstairs was just tripping me out.

I don't have nightmares very often - the last time I had a nightmare I was 12. Usually I just have very, very strange dreams. Let's see - there's two I remember in particular.

1. It was Valentine's Day, and I was dreaming - I was in an alleyway and I saw a trash can. I opened it and inside was my mother and her then-girlfriend; both had been horribly cut up and were very dead.

2. For some reason, I was being chased by giant spiders. These were the size of houses - and I have absolutely no idea why they were chasing me. I don't have a fear of spiders, so this dream strikes me as odd.

I have nightmares about ice picks stabbing into my root canal.

I used to have a recurring nightmare that the crypt keeper killed my family and used their blood to summon a demonic buffalo that ate my dog.

I dreamed that I was floating down a river on a raft with my family and a handsome stranger, but when I look up I realize that I've let my youngest brother (then a baby) fall into the river and drown.

One very morbid dream of mine gave me an idea for my NaNo. :)
Here it is:
I was walking around in the woods, oak trees looming over-head, when I heard a squirell. It was crying out in pain. I found it and it was a baby squirell that had obviously been attacked by a neighborhood cat. I picked it up and cradled it, then it leaped out of my arms and raced down a hole in the ground... I followed it. When i got down there I was in soem sortt of lair and there were 2 men there, it looked like a dungeon. The two men had cut my legs and arms and scalp, pulled out my hair, and poked at my guts and blood which was surrounding me on the cememnt floor. The baby squirell was writhing in pain next to me, it shreaks the only sounds which filled my days. Finally.... I died. Hah, bad ending, but yeah that is what happened. And the scray thing is, the next day I was in the woods and I found a baby squirell crying out in pain... it scurried away down into a rabbit hole or a snake hole or some hole, and then I remembered my dream and ran home. i had that dream for about... 2 months staright. Every single night. finally it ended though... Odd.

I get home and the house is silent and creepy. I want reassurance, so I walk to the door of my parents' room, and I think I see a small devil/gremlin thing. In any case, I sense evil and I want OUT. I start to run, and then I remember our family dog will be left behind and helpless (somehow I just know that my family members who aren't already dead are already also fleeing as best they can.) I start to turn back and I hear a tremendous yelp of pain and terror.

And I'm awake.

........

I'm trying to hide under my covers from a very cheeky ghost. It's menacing, and it's drifting closer. I can't muster the muscle strength to move or to make a sound.

Finally, I'm so scared I force myself awake.

The ghost is still there. It's still gazing at me, amused. It's menacing me.

And after what must have been five minutes I realize it's just a sheet of linoleum draped upside-down over a power saw.

..........

I'm not sure real nightmares are the most realistic.

Those two were from my teenage years. The ones prior are mostly forgotten, and were silly (I was part of a conspiracy that included my family's ambulatory oven and a small yellow attachment to one of my bathtub toys. The bathtub toys, however, were secretly evil, and we all had to flee the house but couldn't because there was a dangerous seashell out there.)

The nightmares I've had since reaching the age of majority weren't the sort that are creepy to describe, but they FELT creepy, and I used my wit to ensure they'd dissolve into the aether as soon as I woke (by not talking about them, and by distracting myself with media.)

Usually, I think, those nightmares involved me dealing with people I worked with and ending up in a bad situation (about to be fired, publically humiliated for incompetence or ignorance, arrested...) I've never had the typical "nude", "wet", or "falling" dreams.

When I was younger, if I didn't like what I was dreaming, I'd just levitate away from the situation and let it fade into something new.

I'm a child again, and I'm standing in a grungy convenience store looking at the candy, while my mother counts to three, and threatens that she will leave without me. I figure it is an empty threat. It turns out that I was oh so very wrong, and she hops into an old and rusted version of the Ford Aerostar we had when I was young. It looks sort of like it did that last time I actually saw it, broken down and left to rust in the backyard with weeds growing up into it as though they were claiming the van to the earth. So, I'm standing in front of the grungy convenience store, watching my mother pull out of the parking lot in, a somehow weed covered, rusted version of the van we used to own, while I stand on the curb and cry, abandoned.

I'm sitting with my family, and the more I look at them the more I realize that they aren't my family. It's hard to explain, but they look wrong, like someone knew what my family members generally looked like and put togetehr duplicates of them, but they didn't get the details right. And they won't let me leave, but I know if I stay they're going to do whatever they did to my family to *me*.

Nightmare 1:
'a golden-haired little girl is sitting at a table talking to her grandmother, who is sewing something. They have a very innocent, sweet conversation, but after awhile, I realize that the grandmother is sewing the child to her leg.'

Nightmare 2:

'a girl is rock climbing when she realizes that her leg is, little by little and in excrutiating detail, being devoured by these bacterial creatures that are small, but still visible. Had that dream right after watching the remake of The Blob.'

I'll keep it short and simple:

I had a nightmare about lying awake in my bed (in the same position in which I had fallen asleep, which made it seem extremely real) and suddenly feeling the sensation of numbness in my whole body. A darkened shadow creature got on top of me and held my wrists, disabling me from fighting myself to move. He kept laughing even though he didn't have a face.

I'm playing at the end of my gravelled driveway (I was 7-10 at the time). I was at this old blue farmhouse that I grew up in, minding my own business- when I happen to look up, and see Cujo (The rabid Saint Bernard) looking at me. He had glowing red eyes, and a long line of drool that pooled on the ground under him. He looked... insane. And enraged.

I immediatally began running to the house, hearing nothing but my screams and the sound of him charging at me. I make it just up the cement steps as he leaps on me.

Celine Dion was everywhere I went, and she kept singing that damn song from "Titanic". I would run as fast as I could to get away, but whenever I got where I was going, she was there to sing another line. I duck into a bathroom stall, and she's sitting on the can, singing "Once more, you opened the door".

Talk about cold sweat. Even talking about that one is traumatic.
