How is everybody doing? Are you all keeping up with the schedule? This is my first year and I'm having a tuff go at it, but as of today I'm actually a couple hundred words ahead of schedule. I hope I can keep it up for another three weeks.! Good luck to you all. Jason Hightower

Cowabunga!

My novel's going along according to schedule, but I hate my main characters something awful. They bicker and take snide potshots at one another all the time. It's like referring children - and they're both more than old enough to know better.

I got the idea October 27th, and only did a bit of reseach to get names for the important people before November 1st. Then a plot opened up and I fell in. BooM! Thud! Ratlle! And that was that. This is the easiest NaNovel I've ever written, it flows so nicely, hitting every plot point and device it can for word count and interest. It's a mystery with no murder, no crime, but it's got horror house rollercoaster rides, beer gardens with busty dirndl-clad waitresses, buff ride guides with charming accents, dragons, yummy food, performers, mysteries, suspension bras, a demented Pole, an over-working rumor-mill, and an antique dictionary to help scatter interesting hints. It even works out precisely to 1 obsolete word hint every thousand words. I've managed to easily work 4 different dares into it, joined the Trebuchet Club, the Kill Cliff Club (not a murder, a clear accident - and he deserved it!), and not one single Plot Pirate has come along to shangai the plot like the year gnomes invaded a perfectly ordinary SF story and turned it into a pseudo-mythological allegory.

And yet, I hate it.

I'll finish it because the writing it's almost writing itself, but I don't have to like it.

Will you be able to make one of hte Meet-Ups? We have lots of fun there, gossiping about our characters, having word challenges, playing with out plot toys and stuff.

I somehow managed to turn a normal, great story into a boring series of conversations. I find that when your main character can't notice much of anything, he only seems to be able to go over the discussions he has during the day. Until he grows out of his nonchalant attitude towards his own existence, I may have to kill him off, and I *can't* do that for the sake of the plot twist he ensures at the ending!!! Blah!

Also, no sleep means bad, bad, bad sentence structure. At about two am last night I looked at a sentence and noticed it began and ended with the same letter. I did a lot of newspaper and creative writing classes- enough to know better! I really don't look forward to editing this big bad... Monster. Still, I think I'm not the only one hear dreaming of actual publication, by which I don't mean taking the manuscript down to Kinko's. How cool would that be?

Oh well. Here's hoping, for myself and all of you!!

Mine's not bad. I got the pacing better than I had it last year; last year I kept wanting to drag things out and the "intro" took about two weeks. Obviously, that's not going to work for NaNo, unless you don't mind having 50K words but a story that has barely started. So inevitably my novel had more than enough words, but it wasn't finished. It still isn't...

This time around, I'm being more sensible about it and not describing everything in such great detail. The story is changing a little out of necessity as I go along, but I'm going to try and make it go more like I wanted it to. We'll see, I guess. But it's about where it should be, considering the fact that we're 8 days in and I'm on schedule.

Writing hasn't been bad. I've been getting a little over 1667 a day, it's been nice and steady. I often approach writing as a chore and it's one of the last things I do each day, but I always enjoy it once I get started. Funny how that works :)

No you are not alone there. One day I too hope to be published (how many dreams do you hear of that start off with the phrase, "one day") but as my furious attempts to keep up with the nano schedule are--at this point--somewhat successful, I find it hard to believe that this could actually be the one. Didn't I read somewhere that December has been deemed National Novel Editing Month? ...And I just thought I had reason to dread the holiday season before! ;-) jhightower

Publication can happen! *gestures at my website* My NaNo novel for both 2005 and 2006 have been accepted for publication, so I can say it's not the impossible dream! :D

I've, obviously, been having a very good NaNo as you can tell from my green ba-- dot. It's a dot this year for some reason. I just set a word count goal and ignored any and all - well... almost all... - distractions until I hit the goal. Sometimes I would treat myself to a downloaded episode of something when I finished a chapter, just as a mini reward. You might try that... when you get over a particularly big plot hurdle, give yourself something. It doesn't have to be big... eat a cookie or watch something on TV. Then jump right back into your novel with both feet! The time you're enjoying your reward is usually spent brewing over plot details and where to go from where you are.

Good luck to all my fellow Okies!

This is my first year too and its pretty tough, I'll agree. I have managed to stay just a little ahead of the daily minimum needed to make it. Of course, most of mine will have to be revised out the ying-yang, but I've got some good frame work. Keep it up!

Congratulations, Geonn! Are we going to see you this year?

I've got year before last's NaNo under editorial re-write pending publication, so I hope to be joining you soon as a published fiction author. It's a lot harder to break into the fiction field than it is the non-fic field (where I have more than 100 write-for-hire books published and 4 books under my name).

Thanks! I don't get out to the meetings, mainly because I'm REALLY susceptible to distractions. If there are other people around, I can't seem to get into my story and the characters minds. So consider me there in spirit, but it's probably best if I'm not there in person. Plus not having a car keeps me away pretty easily. ;-D

My 2005 NaNo novel had to go through three rewrites before it was accepted, so I totally know where you're coming from. I was shocked that the one from last year was just basically "We'll take it!" There were some small issues with it, but it was so much easier than I had anticipated.

Wow, 100 books! Highly impressive! I've almost read that many books this year (all fiction, except for one memoir), but writing them? Can't imagine it!

I'm doing pretty well, as far as word count goes, and I'm enjoying my writing. I don't have any thoughts on how good the quality of the writing is, but I'm doing the best I can, and anything else can wait for December.

I'm a little behind, but I like my plot and my st ructure. I tend to fall into a lot of navel-gazing so I have to make sure I build in some action. I enjoyed what I wrote last night.

I take writing from everywhere. My musings, my IM conversations, whathave you. Whatever moves things along.

Anyway, back to it. I really hope to get to the next meeting. I, too, get distracted, but I want to meet you all.

I never really went back to my 2005 novel, but I'm going to print it out and send it out to a couple of publishers. You never know!

Yvette
