i think im not going to make it, maybe if somebody could give me ideas on how not to get distracted by every day life.
it seems that every single thing on my pc, i.e. games, is distracting. almost pulling me away from my NaNoWriMo!!!

Lol, if I had a solution to that problem, I wouldn't be in a tight spot either. I don't know what to tell you, there is just no tried and true method. I know what might (big might) save me from plonking in the fail puddle is the fact that next week I fully intend to not sleep. I am going to do the zombie thing of only living off coffee and forcing words out, at gun point if I have to. The writing may not be coherent, but there will be a rising word count.

Okay Richard, I won' t ask how young you are. But I will ask you to look after your health! We don't want, or appreciate dead Wrimos!

Seriously, it won't help to push yourself over the edge with your writing. Break your word count into sections. You need to write 4,000 words in a day? That's 4 sessions of 1,000. Or 8 sessions of 500. set yourself 500 words whenever you can, throughout the day.

One tip. I don't do this, but it would help. If you're not a fast typist, abbreviate your characters' names and add a symbol you wouldn't otherwise use in your writing. eg. Charles becomes c+, Douglas is now d+, Freddy is f+. When you're finished writing for the day, do a search and replace. Tell your pc to find c+ and replace with Charles. Find d+ and replace with Douglas. etc. The reason for the + sign is because otherwise it'll change every c in your writing to Charles . . . and that Charlesould be most unaCharlesCharleseptable! That will speed up your writing.

Keep it up, one word at a time. You can still get there.

And if you find you're running out of plot or ideas, succumb to the temptation to go online and visit the Dares thread in the forums: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/1000026

There are plenty of ideas there that I've taken and am now using to boost the wordcount. And after you've picked up a few ideas, unplug your modem, disconnect your router, or just plain cut the telephone line linking your computer to the outside world. Whatever it takes to keep that mother of all distractions, the Internet, out of your life!

Speaking from experience (last year!) it is possible to write 12,000 words in one session. But your back, neck and wrists make you pay for it afterwards!

Hang in there, you can still make it.

Now I better do something to get closer to the finish line...

N.O.

Well done, Richard!!!!

And yeah, the symptoms you describe are familiar to all the nutcases (present company included) who undertake this lunacy every year. I mean, come on, what normal person tries to write about 2,000 words a day for fun while meeting all their other commitments?! You gotta be at least a little crazy!

But, as you probably know by now, having had a chance to restore feeling to the nether regions and reconnect the overloaded neural synapses, it's all worth it!

Now you can sit back and gloat while the rest of us struggle on *grin*.

Ummm. Congratulations on an outstanding word count. I told you you'd make it, but I didn't expect you to do it in one sitting!!!!!

As for who you really are . . . I know about the numb bum, sore back, stiff fingers, and after one of my sessions I was so stiff you'd have thought I'd climbed Table Mountain. But I've never come back to find my story changed and an extra dear-knows-how-many-thousand words added to my word count. If you figure out how you did this, please let me be the first to know!

Well done again. Is your story finished? Or are you going to keep going, like KwikSilver (who's moving like . . . KwikSilver!) and me, SAShirl, who's moving ahead at a far more leisurely pace trying to pretend she's in no hurry. :-)

One other point, Richard. Please post your success on the "50,000 words . . . here come the winners" thread.

I just read your post a few days ago, where you said you didn't think you'd make it! LOL! Yeah right! Outstanding.

Yes, it is funny how sometimes you look back and wonder who actually wrote that. Did you guys see the 1000 words cartoon with the cat. I think it is my favourite this year.

I dread to think what i am going to find when i go back and reread what i have written. I am quite consciously not going back beyond the last few paragraphs just to find my place. I can see a LOT of editing in the months ahead. Including instances when I know i gave a minor character a note but can't remember what it is. They then become: Miss History Teacher or something similar so i can keep track of everyone without wasting time by going back and checking. And more importantly, if i go back it might wake up my inner editor who has been successfully banished for the month.

Glad to see that you managed to sail over the finishing line early Richard. Well done.

Yes well... I desperately need to boost my wordcount, as anyone who glances at the little blue bar on the left will surely notice. Okay, so I haven't uploaded the latest word count, but I have yet to break the 10,000 barrier. And I certainly intend to win. So all the dirty tricks are coming out. After all, it's just getting the basics of the story down, and the right number of words for the little blue bar to become a long purple bar, right?

There is a new character in the story, sort of like an MC, who pops up at the beginning of each scene to introduce the characters and herself. She has 10 (yes, 10!!!) names, including her nickname. And before introducing the characters she introduces herself, again.

And I am once again going to harness the internal editor, aka Elf, instead of fighting him. He also boosts the wordcount significantly.

I will finish....
