I just typed my 50000th word so I thought I would try out the validator again - it gobbled up just under 600 words, so guys, beware if you are planning on getting a nice roundy 50k, you might need to type an extra long sentence or three to get your purple bar....

I'm finding that it actually gives me a couple of hundred extra, which is nice!

Best thing is to give it a go before the last minute so that you know which way it'll take you...

It just added nearly 600 words to my count, which is interesting.

Which word processor package are you using?

I'm using Open Office.

I got an extra 49 words! I think it counts my scene dividing "~~" as a word which my system doesn't. But I don't think I have 49 of them! Maybe it counts hyphenated words separately?

I am using Word 2002 Student edition.

2005 - Team 324 - contemporary action smut - 53K (now 57K) unfinished
2006 - Dragon's Breath - fantasy romance smut - 82.5K (still 82.5K) unfinished
2007 - Dark Masters: Smoke - sci-fi smut
(I'm better at the unfinished part than the smut part!)

The site word-count validator uses the Unix 'wc' utility, which counts any run of normal keyboard characters separated by a space at each end as a word. So, hyphenated words count as one word, but on the plus side, if you use a dash to separate two phrases like this - instead of a semicolon or colon - the dash is counted as a word. It's the nearest I've come to word-count cheating ;-)

So yes, scene separators also count as words!

I have been experimenting, whahaha [clap of thunder and lightning strikes]

All these on Mac:

First is word count for where I'm at
Second is the sentence: It's Gerry's fault. (4 words)
Third is the sentence: It's Gerry's fault - not mine. (6 words)

1. Jer's novel writer: 41,154; 5; 7
2. Word: 40,153; 3; 5
3. BBedit: 41,201; 5; 7
4. wc: 40,152; 3; 6
5. Nano official: 40,153; 3; 6

So, Jer's and BBedit count apostrophied words, but not thought dashes, Word counts neither, wc and Nano doesn't count apostrophied words, but does count thought dashes.

Obviously there seem to be some other things going on as well. Word agreeing with Nano seems a fluke.

Yours for what it's worth...

Um, Solidus, that's assuming that there will be a 'before the last minute'..., *g*.

I, for one, may well be typing word number 50,000 at one minute to midnight.

Re PlatybusBill: Gosh, and here I was thinking that word count = word count. *gulps*

Thanks for enlightening us!

Ooh, I see you're rather close to me in word count. I'm not even *glancing* at those impossible people who have ALREADY GONE purple. It's like opening your Christmas presents on December 15th. Honestly... ;-)

Yup - so give it a go now, so you know whether your word processor's word count is more generous or more stingy than the NaNoWriMo one on your writing.

It frightened me to death. I hit just over the 50k tonight ,so shot off to have my word cound validated, and it came up with 4,100 and something.

It knocked off 46k words!!!!!

Geeeeeeeeze!!!!

Thankfully I tried again and it recompensed me by adding on one word to my own word count. :-) :-)
