This came up during one of the online clinic hour chats - and reminded me that last year, I had started to make myself a motivational and NaNo-specific playlist!

So, what music do you usually write to, for NaNo, generally?

Are there any songs with either titles which scream "NaNo" to you, or who despite having non-NaNo titles, have lines which sum NaNo up perfectly?

*******

I usually just stick my iTunes library on shuffle for writing, I have to say! I wanted to make a good writing playlist for this year's NaNo, but never got round to it!

As for NaNo song titles or lyrics, how about:

- "Beggin' " - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
- "I'm Not Sleeping' " - Counting Crows
- "I'm Not Sleepin' " - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
- "A Long December" - Counting Crows (for anyone thinking of editing!)
- "Here I Go Again" - both Whitesnake and OK Go
- "It's All Been Done" - Barenaked Ladies
- "Too Little Too Late" - Barenaked Ladies (hopefully not!)
- "I Wil Survive" - both Enrique Iglesias and Gloria Gaynor
- "Miniature Disasters" - KT Tunstall (again, hopefully not!)
- "Suddenly I See" - KT Tunstall (hopefully, yes! Inspiration!)
- "There'll Be Some Changes Made" - Fosse soundtrack
- "Now We Are Free" - Gladiator soundtrack
- "Busy Little Bee" - Gladiator soundtrack
- "Cry Me A River" - Justin Timberlake (more hopefully not!)
- "Never Again" - Justin Timberlake (and more hopefully not!)
- "Because We Can" - Fatboy Slim (Moulin Rouge soundtrack)
- "Hold On Hope" - Guided By Voices
- "Changes" - Butterfly Boucher and David Bowie (Shrek 2 soundtrack)
- "I Need Some Sleep" - Eels (Shrek 2 soundtrack) (lol)
- "Something To Sleep To" - Michelle Branch
- "Sweet Misery" - Michelle Branch
- "Goin' Out Of My Head" - Dr. John (Three To Tango soundtrack)

You know, those are just from my iTunes library (well apart from the Gloria Gaynor version of "I Will Survive") - I have a LOT of songs with "sleep" (or lack thereof) in!

I'll have to list ones with lyrics later, after listening to some.

What can you guys add?

I like to listen to ambient or minimalist music when I'm writing. Brian Eno is a favourite and his "Everything Merges With The Night" has apt lyrics for NaNo (it also inspired me and my husband with a name for our daughter when we thought we'd never find one that we both thought was right).

Better known and dafter possibilities would be:

Don't Stop Till You Get Enough - MIchael Jackson
Tubthumping - ChumbaWamba
November Afternoon - Dizzy Gillespie
November Rain - Guns N' Roses
In The Waiting Line - Zero 7
Think For A Minute - The Housemartins
November Spawned A Monster - Morrisey
We Fade To Grey - Visage (too much coffee and too little sunlight!)
Are Friends Electric? - Tubeway Army (for those online wordwar moments)
Word Up - Cameo
Gimme Some More - Busta Rhymes
Slave To The Rhythm - Grace Jones ("Keep it up! Keep it up!")
Time - Pink Floyd
I'm On My Way - The Proclaimers
I Could Write A Book - Anita O'Day (plus loads of other people!)
Here's Where The Story Ends - The Sundays
Neverending Story - Limahl
Sweet November Nothings - Big Country

Some great songs listed... love all the Counting Crows ones. I can write in silence more prolifically, and have always hated writing to familiar lyrical songs. Ambient or instrumental work best. My other half, who is tapping away next me though, has her itunes on random continually. I have got used to it! For some reason Muse seem to feature heavily - she gets fed up with the emotional drainage before I do. It seems pour through me like a dose of castor oil through a loose bowel. Perhaps the most appropriate so far is:

Heaven knows I'm miserable now - The Smiths

She (the tapping away one) says:

There Must Be Some Misunderstanding - Genesis

Not that I would recommend either of these!

Try The Doves (mellow, intricate and beautiful) or Pink Floyd - Echoes according to 'er.

Happy writing. We are both fluctuating like "swelling waves on an autumn sea" ('er again)j!
