My main character is a woman who panics about everything - so i need her to have one GREAT FEAR...which she obviously conquers in the end. Any Ideas (short of being scared of flying, hights, that sort of thing?)

I need something ORIGIONAL!! xx

My partner has pedophobia, the fear of small children. We have a standing rule that we will not eat in any restaurant that has a box of crayons by the hostess station. Perhaps your MC could find herself kidnapped by the founder of the Hannah Montana fan club.

And of course, there's manusinophobia, the fear of anything made in China, although considering some recent incidents here in the states, that's not exactly an irrational fear. Imagine what might happen if a MC with that were to be trapped in say, a Wal-Mart.

There's also geriatrophobia (fear of old people), rhinognatophobia (fear of tiny bugs flying into your nose), and last but not least, dubyaphobia, which is the fear that the leader of one's country is a complete idiot and who is the political equivalent of a juvenile delinquent armed with a baseball bat determined to destroy everything in his path.

What's that? I'm not helping? Huh. I was afraid of that!

Peace out, namaste and write on!

Hey - I had the Australian equivalent of dubyaphobia for 11 years, but was miraculously cured last Saturday!*

Other weird phobias I've heard of:
staircases
escalators and moving footpaths,
open-tread staircases
walking past the open doors of empty rooms,
the feeling of anything covering the face
fear of total immersion in water -being able to swim but not put your head under
fear of dwarfs
fear of clowns
fear of the telephone

Hiope that heps...

Lesley

*In last Saturday's Australian federal election, prime minister John Howard and the Liberal Party (right wing) lost government, and Howard even lost his seat in parliament. A great day!

My friend has a documented math phobia. She has panic attacks if she's asked to do much more than add or subtract two numbers. I don't know if it has a technical name, but she did pass her remedial math classes and get her college degree.

Congrats to you Aussies for dumping the Dubya-supporting PM...we've still got a year to go before the Bushista cabal is swept out of office, sigh....counting down.....

How unusual do you want this fear to be? will the plot revolve around her fear? (I guess it has to, to some extent, if she's going to overcome it at the end, you'll need examples throughout of how the Fear disrupts or interferes with her life)

Is it a social phobia? (fear of a social situation, generally, or something specific like speaking in public or urinating in a public restroom) or a specific phobia?

e.g. specific phobia categories include --
Critters -- e.g. fear of spiders (arachnophobia) or snakes (ophidiophobia).
Natural environment -- e.g. the classic, fear of heights (acrophobia)
Situation -- e.g., afraid of the dark (nyctophobia).
Also things like fear of medical procedures like injections (aichmophobia) or fear of clowns (coulrophobia).

What about fear of being a crazy old cat lady?

You can have her start off single and with two cats or something innocent, and she just keeps getting more and more cats, and no dates - she has to conquer being able to say no to the adoption shelter, and being able to say yes to a man in her life!

Fear of cars :). Lots of plot complications there, and plenty of room and opportunity for motivation to address the fear.

Fear of vomiting - anyone who is extremely anxious fear of vomiting can lead to so many more fears - flying, hospitals, restaurants, public bathrooms, etc.

Fear of being alone.

Fear of crowds.

Fear of specific animals, not yucky ones but ones considered benign like dogs, for instance.

Fear of crossing a body of water on a bridge.

Fear of making left turns. (I knew someone like that. She drove around and around to avoid lefts.)

Fear of driving at night.

The ultimate one is fear of public speaking. Supposedly it's the most common fear.

The weirdest, most irrational fear I've ever heard of is arachibutyrophobia.

That's a fear of peanut butter stickinfg to the roof of your mouth.

I have a book called Funky Phobias with all sorts of weird stuff. Here are some more:
fear of chickens
fear of disorder/ untidiness
fear of gravity
fear of books
fear of the bogeyman
fear of snow
fear of bikes
fear of mirrors
fear of laughing
fear of long words
fear of vegetables
fear of music
fear of poetry
fear of slime
fear of beards
fear of school
fear of puppets
fear of the phone
fear of the number 13

She could be afraid of...
commitment
children
losing her boyfriend
an ex
pregnancy
reuniting with her REAL parents
finding out she is adopted
needles
doctors
losing her best friend

Sorry if those are all bad, but maybe one of them will spark an idea...
