Muddled through to the finish!! And still writing. .......Keep going, you mainstreamers. It's much harder than writing fantasy or sci-fi , I reckon, because you can't write anything that doesn't have a base of reality. Other categories can fill in with flights of fancy, can't they?Or a few more bodies or another dark handsome stranger....
Just ducking in case they read our posts!
Have become very fond of my characters and sad at having to kill off the nicest one..

I guess I look at it from another perspective as I am surrounded by journalists writing non-fiction. I feel that I can take great liberties but yes it has to be very grounded in practical reality. I believe in believable...
BTW If they don't find the nicest one's body they can always come back.
"Don't let little Nell die!"
I fell in love (or in fond) with a couple of my characters too.
It has been quite a journey!
Congratulations!

I'm not sure if I think it's harder to write mainstream than other genre's but I do find that it's more draining, mentally and emotionally. It relies more on emotion and dialogue than grand action sequences or like you said, flights of fancy. It can be difficult to push a story forward and keep it realistic.
