Christchurch Co-ML needed!

I'm away for a week in November, so I'm looking for a co-ML! (My wife is also in the throes of phD writeup and I'm going to need support...eeep!)

So, wanna help? The Criteria...
(1) You've got to have completed at least one nanowrimo in the past.
(2) You've got to be KEEN AS CHUPS! Yep, chups. Coz I've been watching Flight of the Conchords, and damn, our accent is scary. And be in Christchurch. Preferably in every weekend of November.
(3) You've got to have regular interweb access
(4) You've got to be able to actually DO it. People who say "pick me, pick me", and then don't help out/run things get Very Bad Karma. Run Over By A Bus Karma. Possibly a bus of the other NZ ML's, who will be...unhappy. Not that you'd do that, of course. *sneaky glances left and right to see if anyone remembers the fate of he who shall remain un-named last year...*
(5) You've got to have a sense of fun!

Greetings, to anyone that's coming back to the forums on occasion.

With the relocation of ajkiwi this year, Christchurch no longer has it's most stalwart supporter and promoter of NaNoWriMo goodness. I was wondering if there are many around that know they'll be taking part this year, and if any of them might have more experience than I do. This will be my fifth year taking part and my fourth win.

I'm willing to take over ML duties (even the horrible fluorescent yellow t-shirt) but would be (much) happier letting another take the lead.

I figure with nearly three months until November starts some warning is helpful.

Monthly Palmy Meet Ups

Post November, it looked like quite a few of the Palmy nano-ers were keen on meeting up again, on a monthly basis, to continue to motivate / support / appreciate each other. I haven't heard anything about this being brought to fruition, however. Did I miss an email or has it been overlooked in the frenzy of Christmas / New Year celebration?

I hope we can pull it off. Is there anyone out there who knows what is going on?

Monthly Wellington Meet Ups?

It was suggested at the Wellington TGIO that we continue to meet up throughout the year. Andy, Travis and I were thinking of doing a similar thing for Wellington based Kiwi Writers too.

So, I was thinking we could have a monthly get together in Wellington, say the third Sunday of every month? Early afternoon seemed to work for people during NaNo. The 3rd Sunday in December is the 16th, or if that's too soon we can start in January.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to meet? Esquires seemed to work for this year but if there were more than a few people we all ended up quite far away from each other. A place with big table could work nicely.

Inter-Region Competition

I noticed on the intro thread that one of the MLs for Hawaii (Sweetirony) has challenged us to an inter-region competition. I think it sounds like a fantastic idea.

I've just posted on their discussion thread to say hi but thought I'd post this as a separate topic here outside of the intro thread and see what interest it gathers.

I think the challenge is along the lines of 'the highest average of whoever says they're in'. Of course, because we're proud of our win/participant ratio here in New Zealand I'd want to challenge on that so maybe we can suggest we do both ... either way, it's all about getting more people writing more words so that'll be good no matter what.

So what are you doing after NaNo? All of us will have plenty more time in our already hectic lives so what have you got lined up? Are you chilling out? Are you moving on to other projects, or are you finishing your novel?

Palmy TGIO -clash with christmas parade

I just saw that the Christmas parade here in Palmy is on tomorrow afternoon (Sat) at 3pm, right when we normally meet. Usually town is overcrowded, no parks and it will be very noisy.
I suggest we change our meet. I am not sure what time Robert Harris is open on a Sunday or if it would be best to meet earlier in the day.
What is your opinion Ruth?

Palmy TGIO Dec. 2

Hi guys -- It's great to see you're so close to finishing! I'm looking forward to checking and seeing a bunch of winners tonight.

Well, my mother-in-law thinks she's seen all the sights and sounds of Ashhurst (she must not be looking hard enough!), so we're off to Taupo tomorrow morning and I'm going to end up missing the celebratory meet-up at Robert Harris despite saying I'd see you all there. Enjoy your last hurrah and get extra caffeinated on my behalf. I hope to see many of you around Massey, and perhaps even at next year's Nano? Who knows.

25k left to do, in only 10 days!

I've finally passed the half way mark! Woot!

Call me crazy (takes one to know one) but the weird thing is, I still reckon I can finish this thing off :-) An average of 2.5k per day for the rest of the month and I'll be set. Maybe it's not that hard.

My only problem I've had so far is that "Real Life (TM)" has been getting in the way. Hopefully it won't rear it's ugly head again for the next 10 days and just damn well leave me alone to get on with it.

GOOD LUCK to everyone on their final sprints to the finish line. I'll see you all there on the last day I expect. And an even bigger WELL DONE to those who have already finished.

Finally I have completed enough of this craziness for this year... I only squeezed in by a little over 200 words, on my count. But still a win is a win. For me, this was one of the hardest story lines that I have ever done and I don't think I will be doing another factual Nano again..

My friend (Tomo) and I are organising a NaNoWriMo party on the 2nd of December at the Botanic Gardens, Dunedin. Any Dunedin NaNoWriMoers are welcome to join us!!! We will be meeting at the big gate across from the New World at (probably) 1.30pm. If you want to come, bring party food, a camera, music, your novel (completed or not) and if you have one, your certificate. How will you know who we are? Killing Characters

This is NaNo number 6 for me, and I haven't yet had to kill a character. At least, I don't think I've killed any characters in the previous five novels (I don't exactly remember some of them too well).

My story is split into three parts.

I've known for ages that, in my story, I'm going to have to kill a crucial character at the end of part two. Part three can't happen without his being dead, without his will.

I realised today, I really have to kill another character at the end of Part One. This character was never going to be in the story after Part One, so that doesn't change the plot horribly ... but I have to kill them. The natural progression of this story is for his funeral to end part one.

Yikes!

How do you kill characters, anyway? When the fact that they die has to be part of the story, but how they die doesn't have to be?

So, the first attempt at this didn't work as there was too long a period for the message turnaround between myself and the graph creator.
I've contacted the creator and this time it should start working less than a day from now, he'll have to change the forum number on his site but that's apparently it.
Granted, this near the end of the month it's going to be less of a motivating factor (I'm far enough behind I simply have to write, regardless of how I compare to other people) but I would still like to see how we compare.

If this is the first time you've seen this topic don't read any further. Go back up your novel NOW. If you've seen this topic before and you've written words on your novel today I know you've backed it up already. What's that? You haven't? Go, go, go!! Back up that baby now!

Ahem.

If you're wondering just how you can back up your novel, read on!

1. Email it! Email it to yourself if you're working with web-based email. Email it to a friend or family member who will keep it safe for you. Email it to yourself at work.

2. Put a copy on your USB thumb drive or your MP3 player and take it with you everywhere!

3. Other portable storage devices if you are more of a techie type, like external hard drives or other computers that you have around the home.

Back up and keep writing!

Christchurch Meetup - Sunday 25 November - 1430?

Howdy,
I haven't seen anything from AJ and couldn't make last weeks get together, however I would assume that we are still good to meet at the usual place in the North Quad of the Arts Centre. For those who haven't attended before, it's there by the little pond, where the wire house hangs suspended over the grass.

I suspect we'll also get to talk a little on our TGIO party too.

Although with only 34K words done, I suspect that from me it's going to be a hard push to get as many words completed this weekend as possible.

On Sunday I will let you know how many words I have done and how few hours I have slept.. ;o)
