Well, for those of you that turned up to the KOP - I hope you had as awesome a time as I!

We may not have had stealthy ninja moves or Ibis chasing... but we did have brownies!! Thanks Pete! ;-)

Also, many thanks to the lovely people that helped out with cooking the BBQ with me and joined in on the hilarity of yelling out 'ARE YOU A WRITER?!?!' to everyone that even looked in our direction :-D

As for future meets - if anyone wants to meet up, at midnight, in the city (somewhere to be decided) for the COUNTDOWN to writing on October 31st/November 1st, please leave your name (and possibly some meeting place suggestion) here!

I may not be able to attend (due to work, dammit) but that doesn't mean you guys aren't gonna have a lot of fun. Even without paying out on Pete (aka TheZaniak) it will still be all shades of awesome! :-D Plus, CANDY! *dances*

No more AFK

I know people aren't going to read this post for a while yet, but I thought I would just let everyone know that AFK is no more. (I hope it was nothing to do with the hordes of writers that descended upon the place last November!)
Are there any suggestions for another place to meet and write (or chat and completely fail to write) this year?

TGIO - Finalised

Okay! The TGIO is going to be on THIS SATURDAY the 8th. It will start at Pancake Manor at around 7 (I'll be there from about 6:30) and then we'll move onto Strike Bowling Bar at about 8:30ish. I have booked both of these, and they are set in stone.

Having said that, if anyone wants to suggest an unofficial TGIO party on the Friday night, I'm more than happy for that to go ahead, though I won't be able to be there/organise it.

So if you're definitely coming on Saturday, could you leave a comment here and let me know? They want me to get back to them with exact numbers, as "20-50 people" was a bit vague.

Also, due to the late notice, I could only book one lane of bowling. That's 8 people, and they all have to be over 18, so basically it'll be a case of "First to leave your name, first to get a guaranteed bowling spot."

If you're coming with someone, you could probably share your bowling game with them. Alternate, or something like that - that's what my cousin Yav and I will be doing.

In any case, reply here
a) if you're coming, and
b) if you want to book a spot at bowling

Bowling will be about $10 each, and Pancake Manor's cost will depend on what you're ordering. See you all then!

Giving up?

I'm just over 5k from finishing and that's it. November has been a horrible month for me with everything from getting evicted to getting expelled from university happening. Today I managed to leave my most recent copy of my book at home on my memory stick, yet another blow to my writing. If November hadn't of been the chaotic 3 headed spawn of hell month it would be an easy rise to 50,000 for me, but alas next year it shall be. In fact next year I think I could do 100,000 in 30 days if nothing drastic happens to me in the month.

Anyone else in a similar boat, coming so close and just thorwing it to the fore winds?

P.S. I'm not entirely giving up on my novel, I'm going to push it to around 100 pages, edit it myself. Have it edited by a highly skilled editing friend and publishing it. 50k just isn't happening tonight.

TGIO Discussion

I know you all think 'Hey, Ellie, what gives? We're only at the half-way day! It's too early to think about the NaNo after-party!' but when it comes to December events you want to organise it and book everything with LOTS of time to spare.

That being said - let's start putting our votes in for what we want to do at the Thank God It's Over (TGIO) party!!!

Now, the date is usually on a weekend in early December. MOST LIKELY it'll be either Saturday 1st/8th or Sunday 2nd/9th.

We have dinner and then we do an activity. Considering we've been sitting in front of our computers (or Danas ;-P) for the past month, getting out to stretch the ol' legs is a GOOD thing. *giggles* The past two years it was Sizzler for the buffet and bowling (at Strike Bowling bar) after that. If you're happy doing that again just say 'yes'. If not, I would absolutely ADORE your suggestions if you can think of a different activity/place for dinner!

The time will most likely be at 6pm (dinner) and then an hour to two after that we'll do the activity.

So, raise of hands please!

If you want Sizzler/Strike - say 'AYE!'

If you want a different dinner/activity - say 'NAY' and give us your suggestions!

I must admit - weekends were awesome for writing for me but BRING ON NANOEDMO (National Novel Editing Month)! I think my inner-editor is going to be comatosed for a few months yet ;-)

Right.

So, liek, this was my first time at NaNo. And I spent way more time drunk than writing, so yeah, didn't end up happening.
But! I think I'd be encouraged to finish next year/join AA if I were able to see some "Here's one I prepared earlier"s. That and I would love to support local, budding writers. Furthermore, some of your story ideas sound damn good!

If I'd finished mine, I'd have been cautious about whom I gave it to. Heh. But if others aren't as discerning as I, I'd love to have a gander. Link me to your Lulu.com page of previous years! Personal message me with email or other contact so that I can wrangle a copy once it's edited! When I get another job, I'll have more money than sense, so I'll have both time and cashish to read 'em. If anyone wants proof-reading or feedback, I'd be happy on that front too. But if I had written a novel and someone like me had offered to critique it, I'd be all "STFU, Rummy! Write ur own first. LOL"

Is anyone else interested in reading others' NaNo books? I'm interested to read anyone's... c'ept maybe only Ellie's during a heat wave, so that all those cold showers won't be an inconvenience.

Things That Happened This November, or Who Here Loves Kittens?

November, as I'm sure you all know, is never a quiet, easygoing sort of month. Never, ever, ever. Highlights of my previous Novembers include 'getting fired', 'working seven straight days' and 'arm in a sling'. This month, though, has been the worst EVER, and I've been doing NaNo for a long time.

Things That Happened This November to Dyce:

- worked seven days straight due to having to work an extra weekend.
- injured dud right wrist hauling boxes at work.
- all-new assessment hoops to jump through at work, killing brain.
- neighbour's cat announced that she had moved in with us by having kittens in our spare room.
- other neighbour's cat also moved in - this neighbour has been known to be violent.
- husband's parents came to visit from the U.S., necessitating Frantic Housecleaning
- had to celebrate Thanksgiving TWICE, sucking up valuable writing time.

I have never been this behind, ever. What bizarre things have happened to the rest of you that Would Only Happen In November?

And does anyone have a loving home available for a kitten?

Write-In 3's Debriefing

My roommate and I were surprised that no-one had yet started a thread to slander me. :P

So I'll do that. But first I'll get in an apology. heh.

Write-In 3 turned into Wine-In 3 for me. I took the fact that AFK was BYO a little too far at bottle number two and dinner was long gone. Bottle number three, though I don't remember it very clearly, was way out. I was planning to "unlock my muse". I got to the point of forgetting how to walk, let alone write. heh. Oh, and I also forgot that strangers rarely want more than one hug.

Yeah. Sorry about that. I didn't intend to get that smashed and then proceed to bother everyone with loud drunk talk and multiple hugs. It's no excuse but I'm going through a particularly rough patch at the moment. Who knows, maybe I told the people who were there about mah messy breakup and other personal nuggets? So yeah. It's not a simple causal relationship, of course. But certainly a contributing factor.

Anyway... thanks to the people who were there for putting up with me. I'm honestly sorry if I made anyone uncomfortable. Or, more likely, annoyed. 'Speshially the two lovely year 11 lasses whom no doubt had a concerned mother when she came to pick them up. You are welcome to NaNoMail me with any specific complaints. ;) As penance I'm going to suggest to the poor AFK guys when I go crawling back there that they immortalise my stupidity forever. A photo with the caption, "First person to ever get kicked out of AFK cafe for being roaring drunk." What cha all reckon? heh

A big special thanks to Ben aka Logikos and Scott aka Cynikles for helping me negotiate the stairs in a non-lethal fashion at the busstop.

So - despite Rummy in the corner doing scattered lines from Ben Folds' cover of a particularly misogynistic and socially unacceptable song... did anyone have any breakthroughs? XD My story took an unexpected turn when Peter helped me out of a bout of writer's block. Now I have one fewer character to worry about because the eccentric Scottish librarian decapitated him. Perfect.

Introduce your Main Character

I thought this would be interesting, as an insight into what everyone is writing.

Everyone - meet David. He's an unassuming 28 year old half Murri, half Pakistani technical writer (yes, characters that are writers are cliches, I know) who is disgustingly in love with his partner Alyx. He's easygoing, and a bit too new agey for his own good. Alyx is having some strange problems at the moment however that seem to involve black lightning cascading from her body and portals to strange worlds opening. The ironic quoting of Guns and Roses lyrics seems to be happening a bit as well. So David is now trapped in another world of seeming wonder and magic that is degenerating quickly. He doesn't know if it's real or not, if he's in a coma, if he's in his girlfriend's brain - there are so many possibilities. He's not allowing himself to be perturbed however, and is following the signs to find Alyx and a way home. Oh - and teaching T'ai Chi to some locals he makes friends with. As he would say though - if life gives you lemons, cut them into yin-yangs...

Of course, David has no idea how dark things are going to get, and how he is going to be confronted with despair and pain - but then, what sort of main character would he be otherwise?

I'm just wondering how many of us have written fanfic in our time? I have some, it's actually set in South East Queensland so people would, I think, recognise the locations. I sort of consider my fanfic as practice run for writing actual novels, you know, the stories got better and longer over time.

Inner City WRITE-IN #3

Heeeeeeey everybody! (Hiiiii Doctor Nick!)

Thanks again to everyone that made the write-in at the cafe last night! There was a mass of laughing, as per usual, and some new faces in the crowd. How much writing actually got done? Well, I'm not sure. I managed to write a paragraph or two at least ;-)

NOW... the details for the next write-in! Huzzah!

This time it will NOT be on a Wednesday! This is so people that couldn't make the Wed write-ins can make it to a couple of these ones ;-)

Not that we don't appreciate him, but four of us have managed to electrocute Peter in our novels so far. That's as much excuse as any novelist should need for another death by electrical discharge, so what are you waiting for? Peter has already stated he wants to be in as many novels as possible, so the sooner you put a slightly-crispy-around-the-edges-Peter into your novel, the happier he'll be!

Things I have learnt from NaNoWriMo 2007

Feel free to add more to these. Would love to see what everyone else comes up with.

1) Nothing is noisier than trying to be quiet at 1 in the morning.

2) It is a great feeling to get the daily word target only 1 hour into the day.

3) It doesn't happen often.

You know you are getting too obsessed with NaNoWriMo when...

1) ...people say "How's it going?" and you reply with your word count.

2) You don't even need to click on the 'word count' button anymore. Your computer just senses that you are hovering in that direction.

Following the pleasant company and positive word count (1500-2000 words each) at today's northside write-in (attended by me, LustForLike, and mmalrox) we decided to do it again next week!

I'll be there in my nanowrimo shirt and with a white macbook if your looking for us. We are thinking of grabbing ourselves a couple of the comfy sofas - there will be a bit of chatting and a lot of writing :)

There is also a cafe in the library so you can fuel up with coffee/drinks/cake etc.

So let us know if you are coming - Sun 18th Nov, 10am-12pm, Chermside library!

Well, today is the halfway day, the 15th.

Who thinks they can make it to or past the 25k mark today? I don't think I will, got another 2,500 to write, and music practice for church tonight, so that'll screw with my writing time somewhat :S Oh well. I'll get there in the end.
