Guidelines for posting Write In meet-ups

Hey all,

A while ago Rise came up with some general guidelines for setting up write ins. Here are a few of them...

1. Make sure that your Subject line covers location, time, date/days, and that it's a write in. For example:

Write-In Tuesdays, Cleveland Park, 5-7

2. Make sure that the content of your message gives a more specific location as well as directions if it's a bit out of the way. For example:

Who? krobin
Where? Nanny O'Brien's @ Cleveland Park
When? Tuesdays 5-7pm

Directions? On Conn Ave. 1 block south of Cleveland Park metro, just across from the Uptown Theatre.

Another example is this example.

Also, I'd appreciate it if you sent me a PM (private message) about your meet-up so I can post it to the Google Calendar.
Momentous occasions!

This is a purely selfish (and self-congratulatory) post - I am officially, for the FIRST TIME in NaNo history, CAUGHT UP on my word count! 35,000 down and 15,000 to go. I never thought this time would come.... sniff... sniff....

Beyond this bit of happiness on my part, this topic should be used for anyone who has hit their own "Momentous occasion" in NaNo this month. Doesn't need to be a word count; if anything wonderful or even magical has occurred (a new source of inspiration, a surprisingly fantastic character, etc.) feel free to share here. I'm excited for the last week!

I am not at the Winner's Circle - yet. However, I hope to be able to pay the piper when the time comes.

As we near the end of this month the thought has crossed my mind as to what will I do with my FINISHED product? In fact, I blogged about it.

I'd love to hear from Vets and Newbies, regarding their plans for their newly written (dare I say)...Masterpiece!! :)

WRITE-INS, Thursdays 6-8 pm in Georgetown

Hey all those Glover Parkers and G-towners!

I will be doing write-ins on Thursdays for the rest of the month (minus Thanksgiving) at the Wisconsin and M Street Starbucks. I have heard there is ample room on their second floor, so that is probably where I/we will be camped out.

There are plenty of buses that run up to M Street from Glover Park and I'm sure the G-towners know the way. If anyone wants to post more accurate directions, please do. Or just visit wmata.com.

If the tangle of laptops isn't enough, I will make a makeshift sign to alert everyone.

Happy writing and I hope to see you all there!

Meg

P.S-want more writing time in G-town? See the Monday write-in post as well.
THE Graph

The only thing I've found which really gets and keeps me motivated is the NaNo Graph. It's been great. But now that I am exactly 11,045 words from wining on the 30th I'm realizing that there is absolutely no way I will be done with this story in that few words. I'll need another 11,000 at least, probably more, and another two weeks--during which I'll be moving to Wisconsin. I could do as others have discussed and take December off and start again in January but I don't want to lose the momentum I've been building.

Regardless I lose my good buddy The Graph. It stops measuring at 50,000 and November 30th and leaves me and my novel to face the future alone and uncertain.

I am ferverntly hoping that somebody out there knows of a way--short of my printing out sheets of graph paper and building one by hand--to create a similar graph of my own for when the offical NaNo clock runs out.

Anyone got any ideas?
How to get into the writing mode faster?

Hi,

I have problems getting into the writing mode. I have all the storylines in my head but when I sit to down to write, I would sit there and crank out 1 sentence every five minutes. It usually speeds up significantly an hour later but sometimes it takes 3, and I usually only have about 1-2 hours a night to write. Anyone has any tips to get in the mood quicker?

~Winners Circle 2009~

Here is where the party starts.

NaNoWriMo isn't just about pounding out 50k. It's about the adrenaline of the hunt, the excitement of creating new characters, discovering new plots, writing that amazing sentence. It's about the word wars, the write ins, the takeout dinners (and the pile of dishes haunting your sink... and counter... and stovetop). It's about ranting at strangers and meeting new friends. It's for the blogs, the tweets, and this forum. It's DC pride. Congratulations to all.

No matter if you hit 50k or not, if you wrote for NaNoWriMo, you'll get something out of it. Hell, you already have. And you -will- try again next year, right?
WRITE IN - Portrait Gallery today (3-5)

Hey, all, I know there's a write-in today from 2-4 at the Portrait Gallery, but I didn't see anyone and I got here late. Letting you know I'll be here until 5 or so (I'm going to write another 4,000 words today if it kills me) and anyone's welcome to join. The wifi is down in the main courtyard, but I'm up on the 3rd floor, where they have free coffe and herbal tea and PLUGS for my laptop! Fantastic.

Hope to see someone here!
Thank God It's Over (TGIO) Party location? Help!

Okay my fellow wrimos, I am putting the call out. Kay and I are looking for potential locations to host the Thank God It's Over (TGIO) party in early December. Any help you can provide would be most appreciated.

What we are looking for?
- Somewhere that can accommodate a decent sized crowd, ie 30-40 or more people.
- In the past we have used conference rooms at apt. buildings, peoples apartments, and Epicurean.
- Some bars/restaurants/etc. may have private rooms. That would certainly work, but we prefer to be able to use something that can be "donated" (ie will not cost us anything to rent) or will be very very minimal in cost.

Epicurean is our fall back in case nothing works out, but we would really prefer somewhere a little more private that can accommodate us. You know how crazy the writers around here get when we get together (mid-term party, case in point, haha). If we can find a private room, apartment, etc. we might be able to do a pot luck thing like we did several years ago. Tons of fun.

If you have any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions, please private message Kay and/or myself so we can investigate. Again, any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Now quit reading this and get back to writing! :-)

Thanks in advance,
Write-In Fridays, Farragut/Dupont, 6-8pm

Where? Caribou Coffee at the corner of 18th and M Streets, NW
When? Friday evenings from 6-8 (or later if people want to stick around, they're open until 10)

Directions? Two blocks north of the Farragut North metro, two blocks south of the Dupont Metro (south exit).

We thought this would be convenient for those of us who work and/or live around Dupont Circle or Farragut. I won't be there this first week, but Erin will be so you can look for her. They have WiFi and plenty of tables so it should be a good place to write.

Hope to see some of you there!

"Resistance Is Insidious" and other ways that Resistance blocks your inner creative battle

If you find yourself with mixed reactions to the coming deadline, take a peek at Steven Pressfield's little book, THE WAR OF ART (http://bit.ly/3PfOgF). [Amazon says it isn't available until 2010, but that is incorrect. I bought my copy at Kramer Books.] Written in digestible one- or two-page bits, Pressfield's book attacks what he embodies as "Resistance," an entity that takes many shapes and forms whose sole purpose is to defeat the creative energy and the Muse that we need to become working writers. I read up to page 6, then put the book down, so inspired was I to get back to writing simply by what was in those first 6 pages. Pressfield, an author of several books (I loved "THE LEGEND OF BAGGAR VANCE) also maintains a terrific blog about writing, the creative process and the war in Afghanistan, including a weekly Wednesday blog that picks up the same sujbect as THE WAR OF ART. (http://bit.ly/1ihAWQ) Good luck all, and it was truly inspiring to see so many at the DC kickoff meeting.
The "just gave my novel a title" thread.

If nothing, I felt the need to share this, and I think this is a different milestone than word counts.

Yesterday, when writing (and hitting 20K by the end of the day, despite what the word-eating NaNo counter says...), I came up with the title of my novel. It's nothing special, but was something I had been wrestling with when not writing. Nothing I had thought of really represented the story I wanted to tell. And then something much simpler than anything else hit me, and I said "yep... this'll do".

It's a working title, and could always change, but I was wondering if anyone else can share in the feeling of discovering your book has a name. For me, it made what I've been writing for 10 days feel like something much more real.
Bizarro Fiction Free eBook

For everybody I've been trying to explain Bizarro Fiction to at the write-ins, this might help. One of the editors of Eraserhead Press is going to make Shatnerquake available as a free download on Tuesday. Anyway, here's the link.

It's essentially about William Shatner at a William Shatner convention being attacked by every character William Shatner has ever played. He spends a lot of time having fistfights with TJ Hooker and being chased by Captain Kirk.

http://jeffburk.wordpress.com/2009/11/15/a-shatnerquake-is-predicted-for...

Magnetic & electricity?

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what happen to a magnet when lightning hits.
Will it become supercharged? will it become a conductor? will it attract lightning?

My novel involves a magnet and a couple of other objects that need electricity. Just trying to figure out a way to recharge the batteries for those objects in the middle of nowhere. My character may be able to find metals, wires and stuff, just not a power outlet.
If you have any ideas, please help.
