THANK GOD IT'S OVER party!!!

As most of you know, it will be at Panera next Friday (that's the 5th of December) at 6:00 PM. Wear party hats if you wish, and come prepared to sit down WITHOUT a laptop in front of you, and share some good old-fashioned friendship! I promise ... I won't wear the hideous neon green shirt!

Hope to see you then...

How to Waste Valuable Time

It's been one of those days - you know the kind - where you can't get anything done cause you don't want to? That's my kind of day. Could be boring, but I've managed to amuse myself. This morning it was doctor's appointments and bloodwork, fasting and no caffeine! Oy Vay! Which is why I wasted the rest of the day - my brain never got its morning kick start.

After watching an episode of Torchwood on DVD, I sat down to try and work on my revisions - Good grief! Didn't even bother to open the file. Been fiddling with other stuff - not NaNo either - just stuff.

Since I'm enjoying my new Logitech speakers (on sale at Best Buy for $40,) I've been playing a lot of music. I looked up that song David mentioned on Sunday, "To Build a Home" by the Cinematic Orchestra. Very good, thank you, David! My youngest, who is teaching himself to play bass guitar, showed me some videos of a guy named Victor Wooten. If you like funk, slap bass, or really unusual playing styles, he's worth looking up. There was a good song in Torchwood I had to look up too, "One of These Mornings" by Moby. Add that to the song from Fringe, "Let It Be Me" by Ray Lamontagne, "Come Undone" by Duran Duran, "Life is Beautiful" by Sixx:A.M. and Joe Satriani's new album, "Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock" - Well, I've been a happy little camper!

I figure I can waste at least another hour like this, then I'll have to figure out something more constructive to do until bedtime.
Happy NaNoing!

Ahh!
I go to my Rotary interview tomorrow for a foriegn exchange program. I need to speak for three minutes about current events, local, national, or international, that cannot be about election 2008.

All I can think of is:
Crocs (because Dow is so old fashioned) lost 148 million dollars this quarter
Proposition 8 passed in Silicon Valley (banning gay marriage)
Washington legalized doctor-assissted suicide.

Do any of you know anything more exciting?
I Have Hit the Boredom Wall!

I've got about 30 pages to finish proofing for the publisher, I'm at a ridiculous word count in NaNo with no sign that it's winding to a close and it's quiet in the house. Do I want to do anything with my books? NO! I'm ready to log off and watch the Torchwood disc I got in the mail today.

I feel guilty about not working on "Lone Wolf" and finishing it up, but I worked on it all last week, even when I was sick. I'm BORED! I can't figure out how to kill off Cliff Brooks, I don't know where I'm going to work in Raccoonnookkeeper or "give me one knight and I'll mate you." The story is going the wrong direction again - going to have to do more hack and slash. What's wrong with these people?

*sigh* I think I'm going to go watch Torchwood and drool over Captain Jack. Maybe I'll feel more like writing after I do that.
How do you say procrastination?

Arg. I don't want to write right now.

Maybe I'll alphabetize the nonperishable foodstuffs in the pantry.

Maybe I'll pretend to watch Thursday night football (When the hell did football start on Thursdays? I thought I only had to give up the living room to the hubby twice a week. This extra day is crap! CRAP I tell you!)

Maybe I'll balance my checkbook for the past 12 years.

Or clean the grout in my bathroom.

Or examine the dirt in the backyard. I 'll never have grass, but darn it, I want high-quality dirt!

Or spend (on paper) lotto winnings for a ticket I haven't purchased.

Or, maybe I'll just pop in here, and hope one of ya'll are in the mood to aimlessly prattle in an effort to not write.

Pick Up Lines

So my story has this one character and he is constantly throwing out random, mostly cheesy, pickup lines.

Unfortunately, I am all out of the ones I remember and the person that told me all of those has left for the Navy.

Any ideas?

I've got:
I wish I were DNA helicase so I could unzip your genes.
Good thing I've got a library card so I can check you out.
Be unique and different, just say yes.
Hey, babe. Do you have Cingular? Because you're raisin' my bar.
I may not be Fred Flintstone but I can sure make your bed rock

and some others that are incredibly awkward.
Why fictional characters are better than reality

I dunno if it's just me, but do you guys ever just watch someone and think, "Dang, my character would be so much better for this planet than this guy"?

Sometimes I just hate interacting with my peers, but maybe I'm just antisocial/schitzo or have bad influences.

I mean:
+ If you don't like something a character says or does, you just hit the delete button
+ When you're having a bad day, you can treat them like shit and nothing bad happens except plot development.
+They can't kill or hurt you if you do something bad to them
+ When you get pissed at them, you can kill them off and it doesn't matter - there's always a sequel or deus ex machina to save the day (or just delete it)
+ Most of my characters don't bring drama in when the plot is at its most demanding
+ You can banish a character to the Folder of No Return without the cops coming around asking questions.
+ My characters understand God's Eleventh Commandment of "No Glove, No Love"
+ Their drama goes away when I stop thinking about them
+ There are no awkward introductions
+ They can't embarrass you in front of everyone
+ If they turn against you, the worst they can do is give you extreme writer's block.
+ They don't have to be plausible
+ If they don't do what you want, there will be dire consequences.
+ [ [ I shall never grow up ] ] +
Spies in Daytona Beach!

Hey gang,
I want to write a spy novel. I don't know what my spy is spying on, but I'd like to set it in Daytona Beach, because I just moved from there. (I live in Viera now, but I'd rather join this group than the freaks down in Vero.)

My question is: What the heck would a spy need to be in Daytona Beach for? Is he the serial killer? Is he trying to find the serial killer? Is the serial killer really a retired KGB operative? Hmm.

I could make it Outlaws related, but I'd rather not, bc I don't want to feel like I'm writing "Sons of Anarchy: The Novel."

Ideas? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
-D
Kickoff Party!

There will be a Daytona Beach NaNoWriMo kickoff party this coming Saturday (Oct. 25th) at the Panera Bread Store on International Speedway Blvd. (next to Chik-fil-A on the corner of Williamson and ISB.) I hope someone sees this and makes it, as I only have 8 or 10 of us lined up so far, and I've had no luck getting an article in the News-Journal. I will try again, but if you see this, come on in. Look for us near the back (our usual write-in spot.) I'll have little purple table tents, that say NaNoWriMo, on the tables.

Hope to see you there!

~Bruce
News-Journal NaNoWriMo article

Online only, at least so far, but it went up today:

Time to get your write on: it's NaNoWriMo time

This year marks the 10th annual National Novel Writing Month, meaning that somewhere out there are people who have written at least one book every year for a decade.

This event, started by writer Chris Baty, encourages would-be novelists to get over their stalling ways and finally take the plunge by whipping out a 175-page novel (50,000 words) in 30 days. Quality is largely optional and, frankly, beside the point.

The secret to success in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) lies in a single motivation: an insanely tight deadline. The event begins at 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 1 and stops at the stroke of midnight Nov. 30. No time for editing or polishing, and writer's block is a luxury you can no longer afford. Their motto: "No Plot? No Problem!"

"When you sort of look at this you think this is really a stupid idea, you know. Everybody's out there just trying to write a bad novel," NaNoWriMo creator and freelance writer Chris Baty said. "Really when you write for quantity instead of quality on the first draft I think you end up getting both. A first draft is where you want to be taking risks and making mistakes."

Hi guys!

Okay, so technically, I'm not a member of this region anymore. But you guys won't hold it against me, right? I wanted to come in and express my best wishes to all of you -- may your novels be wonderful and epic and great again this year.

Also, I miss you guys a ton and wish I could be there writing alongside you all at write-ins this November. Trust me to be there with all of you in spirit, and maybe in person for one -- road trips permitting.

This group is the best thing to happen to me and NaNoWriMo, and I wish everyone the very best. Take care and happy noveling!
A slice-of-life novel centering on girls' baseball, of all things.
