I've got an idea for a story. Basic plot is, High school girl meets mysterious hot new boy, girl falls in love with hot new boy, hot new boy is (gasp!) a vampire, girl decides he's her true love anyway... then she finds out he actually just wants to sleep with her and then kill her.
Anyway, I was thinking that it would be most effective to throw a whole heap of clichés into the vampire romance part. Basically, I want the girl to feel like she's just stepped into a (bad, haha) teen romance novel, so she won't notice how evil the guy is (or how right for her the nerd who sits next to her in precalc is D: ).
So in short: what are the worst vampire romance clichés?

--Is killed by stake into the heart/garlic
--Is dark, handsome, tall and mysterious

the traditional stuff isn't really cliche anymore. i've never read a vampire book that actually uses them. :( i just can't find any traditional vamps. it's sad.
what I think IS cliche in vampire romances... anything that you might find in a Stephenie Meyer or LJ Smith book.
So basically... the vampires being able to go out in the daylight, drinking animal blood instead of human blood, be a million times hotter than a regular human, having funny coloured eyes, being all "You shouldn't be with me! I am a monster! I cannot be close to you or I will want to drink you blood!" angst angst angst.
oh, and the only real conflict in these stories are usually things like
jealous vampire girl being bitchy
random evil vampires attacking
getting in trouble with the vampire "elders" because of falling in love with a human girl
etc.

^Have you read "Peeps" by Scott Westerfield? Maybe it's me being inexperienced, but I thought that was a very original take on 'old-school' vampires. Bit weird, but original. The first few Cirque du Freak books weren't bad either - the MC did angst about drinking blood at first, but he got used to it. =o)
--Vampire angsts about how much he would give to be human again / how sucky his life is despite all the obvious benefits of being superhuman.
I like this premise very very much. If you ever need a beta-reader ... *cackles*

i know a lot about vampires (not the cruddy cliches, but like, the real deal, so, ask me if you want REAL cliches/ myths). and a lot of the pther suggestions are totally true.

I used to like vampire stories back when the extent of my knowledge of them was Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. But then out came SMeyer with those godawful books and.... Like, I mean, I guess they aren't BAD books. They're just not as good as people act like they are.
....Okay, never mind. They suck. Way to tell girls that an abusive relationship is TOTALLY dark romance. >> (Thinking of Edward/Bella here.)

Personally, and this is only personal. I would be VERY careful about writing any sort of vampire novel, romance or not.
Simularily, I wouldn't write a book about a wizard-school.
Why? Stephenie Meyer and J.K Rowling have kind-of...done all that needs to be done in those categories. It's strange ground to tread, especially since they're all the buzz right now.
I wouldn't risk putting my heart and soul into something that people would turn around and call copied.

Don't forget the whole "air" around him. He has to be attracting a foreign michiveous yet gentlemanly manor accrording to the cliches.
I see the cliches in all the books, I realise Edward and Bellas relationship is "power and controling" but its so darn good!

Okay, let's see... obviously he's gotta be pale. Ultra mysterious. All the girls are attracted to him but he's way too awesome to talk to any of them. He's really just misunderstood. In his heart of hearts he's really just a gentle soul longing for the love of some other shy, misunderstood bookworm. Some kind of strange eyes (topaz, anyone?). Very intelligent/knowledgeable about many subjects. Very cool car. Angst angst angst. She unfreezes his cold heart or something. Haha.

I've read a lot of vampire books, basically name one and I've probably read it. Cliches aren't something I really keep up with cause in the vamp books I've read, all of the legends and things are different. Especially by marriage and how you turn someone into an undead creature (I don't like using the same word too many times).

I love your novel idea! That's a really amusing twist to the typical vampire romance novel. I would totally buy your book!
As for cliches, I can't think of anything besides what was already mentioned. The hot man all the women are attracted to, really broody and woe-is-me "I'm a monster", protects humans and despises his blood-drinking fellow undead, has cool superpowers, looks great in black.
