Where are you allowed (or should I say, not allowed) to smoke in the state of Michigan? In Ontario I think you're not allowed to smoke in any place of business - so no restaurants, bars, patios, etc. Is there still such a thing as a "non-smoking section" in suburban Detroit?

At the time I read it, the top news article (which was written less than an hour ago), basically said "the writing is on the wall" as far as being able to smoke in public goes.

Most public places in Michigan - schools. restaurants, arenas, and the like have adopted the federal guidelines pretty much - no smoking allowed.
Restaurants have smoking/non-smoking areas. So do hotels/motels.
There is a move to ban smoking in bars and casinos, as the other poster mentioned.

It might depend on the restaurant, but yes, for the purpose of a story you could definitely have people smoking on a restaurant patio. It would be up to the individual establishment, however, though smokers will often light up anyway because it's assumed that the outdoors are smoke-friendly areas. If it's against the rules, someone would probably have to ask them to put it out.
