My latest story has main character become a double agent. He's really a nice person, but he'd been hiding among what amounts to a magical crime organization. Then, he's asked by someone in the group that's working against the crime organization to spy on them - find out what they're up to and report it, so that the plans can be stopped.
My problem is, so far he's only done so for one case. He learned that the crime organization (ILC) was going to try to kill an important mage. He's told his handler and now he's working from the inside to prevent the mage's death. I need some other "cases" for him - other times when he's uncovered planned badness and he's prevented it.
ILC is responsible for the usual things criminal organizations go for, just with a magical inclination. They steal mystical artifacts and forbidden magical books, they try to kill people who get in their way, they plot kidnappings... All I have right now are vague ideas. I need some specific cases to write into the story.
What sort of mischief could my double agent character get into? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing I thought of was MC finding very interesting magic that he falls in love with so that actually, he becomes the criminal just for kicks, just once. All along, he continues to fight the temptation not to fully join the organization and have more fun. Maybe he carries a piece of the item he steals with him and touches it to remind him of his morality side when times get tough. And too, maybe a later pickle could be that someone finds out HE was the one who did the thieving on that item.
Story sounds great. Are you planning this for NaNo or writing this now or planning to write this next month?

I write white on white. The editing is much easier! LOL

I'm actually writing it for Gaia's Summer Writing Months. It's a re-writing of a series of short stories I wrote fifteen years or so ago. I'll see what I can do with your suggestion. Thanks!

When I read this, I sort of smiled because it made me think of the TV show "Alias". It was such a smart show with an amazing plot in the early seasons. Swing by http://www.alias-tv.com and you can check out episode synopses which cover not only the overarching storyline, but more importantly for what you're asking, the missions she has to accomplish as a double agent.

Other cases for him? Well, he could be sent to steal some artifact and then "accidentally" triggers an alarm, sets off a trap, or alerts a guard. He probably wouldn't go on other thieving missions, especially if he has a bit of trouble aiming and keeps hitting his own friends.
Randy: Stop telling her all my best ploys, Lady Author!
I didn't mention that you deliberately got the whole little thieving group arrested.
Randy: You just did!

It's the Incantation Lodestone Company. Their leader is trying to make them seem like a legitimate company.

That's a terrific idea, Tasha! He does something similar later, but I'm sure I can work with it and have it be different enough. ^_^ Thanks!
