Kick Off Party Headcount

The first ever kick off party of the Pinoywrimos will be on October 25, Saturday, from 3-5pm. Place TBA (suggestions welcome, preferably central, around Ortigas and Makati -- specific locations appreciated). If you're going, please do post here so there's a more or less accurate headcount. :)

I'll be posting the lineup of activities here soon (as soon as I get them down). Volunteers also welcome (other than those who answered that they'd volunteer for the kick-off in the survey :D) -- please post here too.

Thanks!
What's your plot?

So what are you planning to write this year? Will you be venturing into a new genre or settling into your usual? Do you have your characters planned out or are you still waiting for them to talk to you?

In case you don't have a plot yet -- post your woes here too! Maybe others can help you with come up with something for this year.

For this year, I'm going back to chick lit again after a very disappointing (personally) year in Mainstream Fiction. I just have to say that I am a fluffy writer, and there's no denying it! Haha. Anyway, my plot for this year has been inspired since April, during one of the boy and work discussions I had with some other Wrimos (Julie, Anne and Kat, to those who know them from last year). The title (thanks to Julie) is I Am Single (And Everybody Knows). It's about Ruth who gets thrown into the dating world because of all her friends' intentions of wanting her to date, after everyone finds out that she's single and has never had a boyfriend. It's going to be based a bit on what my teammates do to me at work. Heh. This should be fun. :D

What about you? :D
What are you reading right now?

So it's not exactly noveling...but writers read too, right? ;)

I just finished reading Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. Loved it! One of her main characters is half Filipino, which always thrills me. Then again Marisa's dad is from Cebu, so it figures she'd put a Pinoy in. :)

Right now I'm reading Marley and Me by John Grogan. I just started it and I've found myself giggling over some of the cutest dog moments. :D It makes me want to say "awww" while reading it.

NaNoWriMo store group shipping

I saw this thread in NaNoWriMo Singapore's forum, so I thought I'd do something like this here din. :D Anyway, I don't know if you guys have checked out the store, but have you seen those awesome goodies there? Haha I for one want the shirt and the mug, plus I owe someone a copy of No Plot? No Problem! So...I was thinking, it might be cheaper if we order at the same time and sabay sabay yung shipping. I can do the ordering and have it shipped here, and then I'll just bring it during the mid-month write-in (since malamang di to aabot by kick off) or TGIO.

What do you guys think? If you're game, leave a comment here, with your order. Payment option would most probably be bank transfer -- I'll be using my trust card to pay online. :)
How are you preparing for November?

Okay, so now let's talk serious November preps. 18 days to go (as of this posting) -- how are you preparing?

I've been trying to write character profiles since last week, but every time I sit down and write, my characters always shut up. ACK. Some of the characters will be kind of based on other people I know, but I don't want it to be too much like them since I'm planning to print this one out and have some people read it (if I get to finish it immediately, that is). So now I feel like I'm more comfortable writing the plot points first before giving more color to my characters. But I feel like I should do it the other way around, especially since chick lit is mostly character driven. So...see my dilemma.

So now to prepare, I've decided to just read up first. I'll do some character sketching by next week, hopefully. :D As I've mentioned in the other thread, I've started reading some local chick lit books to see how it's written and how much of a Filipino feel it has. I'm also going to re-read "How to Find Your One True Love" by Bo Sanchez, as some of the principles I'll be using for my MC's lessons will be from this book. Hopefully, while re-reading those, one of my characters (especially my MC) would finally speak up.

On technical stuff, I've stocked up on index cards and have set up my project file in Scrivener (novel writing tool for Macs) so I can write there. I've also installed Q10 in my flash drive (awesome distraction free writing tool -- it totally blacks out the screen) so I can steal some writing time at work. :D

I'm personally thinking of writing 60K this month, and making sure I finish the novel by end of November instead of finishing a part and leaving it until I feel like writing again, just so I can actually finish another novel. :D Plus get that printing prize at the end of the month. ;)

Okay this was a long post. How are you preparing? :)

Aaaand we're...live! Well okay, it's two days till the site officially opens, but the NaNo higher ups shared the soft launch with the MLs so we could test and make sure everything is as bug-free as possible. It's been okay so far, and I thought I'd drop in a note here so when you guys pour in, you won't be faced with an empty forum.

SO...HELLO! It's a month till NaNoWriMo 2008! For returning Wrimos, speak up! What's your action plan for this year? What are you planning to write? :D

For newbies, introduce yourselves! Don't worry, we don't bite. :D
"who's that writin?' John the Revelator, wrote the book on the seven seas..."

. . .
*sigh* man... that news' heavy...

now the more i get to think of it, the more i realize how time just zipped by...!

ever had that 'blues brothers 2000-like' start of the movie, just when you're about to wait for 'jake blues' to pick you up you'd find from your parole officer that he just passed a way not so long ago. and then, somber silence.

. . .
i somehow remember that singular post-NaNo '05 meeting i've been. it was probably around december '05. i think there was around five of us. the first few people i met was 'illustria' and 'green grapnel' (good lord, i already forgot their names, somebody kill me!) and it was in starschmucks shangri-la. surprisingly, we felt like we've known each other already.

we're already enjoying ourselves over our coffee in huge relief after the '05 NaNo stint quite long enough when 'lumitao' arrived with NaNo buttons and stickers to give to participants. from then on it's a round-the-world trip to each of our own NaNo stories and tales which seemed to have lasted for hours. i think at the time we were expecting a huge lot of people to arrive, though needless to say we continued on our post-NaNo '05 musings, rants, and endless exchange of wacky ideas long before we decided to continue our meeting still in shangri-la, simply because we're just about hungry and needed a place to eat. at that time, just when we're still expecting more people, we never ceased from brainstorming. yet out of all of us present there, none was more humorous on having finished NaNo than Erwin.

. . .
at the time it was Erwin who initiated on furthering our literary insanity one step further by proposing to accomplish a quick comicbook write-up and artwork for submission to "Fully Booked's" graphic novel contest; a feat which i was sure all five of us would've answered in a heartbeat. as far as i remember the contest was due early February of '06, wherein it was around that time things got a bit messy from my own neck of the woods; i slowly abandoned my own literary endeavours towards the contest as time progressed. eventually i think Erwin still went on into finishing his comicbook write-up quite in time before the deadline. upon hearing the news i couldn't think of anyone else seemingly-dedicated enough to finish another literary feat after having gone through such a month-long gig like NaNoWriMo.

. . .
hours later, 'eldritch00' (his username as far as i remember) came, being the last person to arrive in that momentous occasion. from then on, even so, we felt like the only thing missing in our meeting was a huge bonfire and the rest of the shangri-la mall set into darkness. each of our stories felt like portals, both in the traditional and - quite surprisingly - in a computer shoot-em-up 'portal game' kinda sense. for once having started doing NaNo, tradition in writing seemed to have been missing quite entirely in all our novels. and yet, for the most part, we all enjoyed having done it!

but you know something? apart from all the wacky stuff all five of us've discussed laughingly, i think the most memorable thing about having done so, at that time - no matter what our ideas were - was the way we shared our stories through that singular meeting: the way we told of our month-long ordeal. and how awesome it felt like to have shared that, even for that one very brief meeting alone. for me, of all the past three 50k NaNo's i've finished, the third one must've been the most memorable simply because of that experience. at that moment, all five of us clicked.

. . .
for the life of me i have no idea how that turned up to be my last meeting with the rest of the post-NaNo '05 gang. i got entirely caught-up with my own gig shortly afterwards, i only get to hear bits and pieces of early January '06 projects online either through 'lumitao,' 'green grapnel' or even with 'illustria' through our respective blogs. even continuing with my literary blog based on my third NaNo became less of a gig for me, as my effort in continuing to write diminished by the day. thus, around February of '06 onwards until now, i ceased from writing entirely.

. . .
*sigh*, man, oh man, oh man... wow. how time painfully flew =(

...
calling "illustria," "green grapnel," and "eldritch00," wherever you guys are... this here's for the 'dude...!'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vAczJUkwU0

...
giboy =(

----------

Asia :: Philippines
