HELLO 2008!!!

Hey everyone! I know I'm a few months early here, but I am bored at work, so I thought I would start getting my thoughts and ideas down for NaNo this year.

I'm wondering if we have any new or old members in our massive China group? When you recieve this, post us a response!!

Because of the nature of my job this year, I am hoping, as ML, to be able to travel to other places in China to do at least ONE write-in: Hangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Tienjin (I dunno if this is the spelling!) Chengdu.

Of course, being located in Guangdong, we'll have a few Guangzhou and Hong Kong write-in.

Ok, I'm off to fake work!
~Shanny
Hong Kong area write-ins

Heads up everyone near HK! We need to start planning our NaNo write-ins! This year, I'm hoping a lot of you can make it, since there's so many in the HK region this year.

ANYWAYS! One of our write-ins should definitly be somewhere between Nov 17-22, since Jennifer, a lone NaNo'er in northern China, will be down in HK. All other dates are open!

What I need to know from you all is:

1) What dates are good for you?
2) What times are good for you?
3) Can you recommend a cafe, large enough to comfortably seat roughly 10 people, for several hours on end? (Please keep in mind this place should be centrally located enough so more people will be able to attend. I know having it near your place would be great, but only recommend if it's within easy reach for everyone).

Before recommending a place, you might want to scout it out.

-does it have enouh power outlets? (I can buy some extention cords if we need them, but many of us have laptops and need ENERGY!!!!)
-is the cost resonable for coffe/soda/juice/food?
-is the coffee and food good? :P
-is it comfortable?
-is it near reliable public transportation?
-and please.... ASK IF IT'S OKAY! This RARELY happens, but some cafes are adverse to large crowds who sit for hours on end WRITING (god-forbid in a cafe, but it's happened). Just tell the manager who we are and what we do, (saying it's an international orginization works great!) what day and times we would be coming, and make sure it's okay. This is important for the manager to know, because he/she might need to scheduale extra staff that day.

I would recommend a write-in in Zhongshan, lol, but there is seriously nothing up here. And I think Guangzhou is too far away...
~Shanny
Question: China, Africa & media

Dear fellow writers,

I'm writing a novel about the rise and fall of a female media tycoon. As part of her global expansion strategy, she teams up with a Chinese media organisation and sets up a big financial news network in Africa (ca. 2015). This really takes off when Africa becomes one of the hottest emerging markets and everyone wants to invest there.
I've already posted a message on the South African message board asking for advice on the technical aspects of such a project - unfortunately, I'm not an expert on Africa. I'm also wondering about some China-related issues (the venture is not absolutely central to the plot but I'd still like to get it right):
1. China has been really active in Africa recently, but most investors seem to concentrate on engineering, construction, infrastructure. Is there any investment at all in African media, financial services, banking, internet communities?
2. Is there any Chinese media organisation (Xinhua or Hong Kong-based media) that invests in other countries? I guess Xinhua is unlikely to invest abroad for political reasons, but how about Hong Kong-based media?
3. Is there any existing media tycoon in China (mainland or Hong Kong) who could hypothetically be up for that kind of speculative venture? Someone I could read up on to get some more ideas for the characters in my novel?
Thank you so much for your help!!! Most grateful for any advice.
Karla

----------

Couthern China/Nortehrn China NaNo 2007

Hello everyone! I can't believe all of our earlier posts were wiped. Oh well!!

This is your Southern ML checking in to see how many people are doing Nano this year in all of China. And because all of our previous information was lost, if you are in the China region and are planning on doing NaNo, please reply here (or email me at welkin.info@gmail.com) with your name, your location in China (city & Province), best times for you to do write-ins online/IRL and the best way for me to contact you.

Since I've the feeling we're a bit spread out this year, I am thinking we might have write-ins and word-wars online. We can do this through whatever IM system you all think is best. Right now though, I only have MSN (ID: marimeya_kaburagi@hotmail.com) and Yahoo Messenger (ID: akia_ly_the_great). Feel free to add me. If you all wish to use AOL or any other ones, let me know so I can get an account for myself set up.

Also, right now, I am the current ML for the Southern China region. If someone would like to take claim to the northern region, please make a bid for it here, and we'll all consider you. Otherwise, I will also help put together meet-ups for northern China.

Alright!!! 27 days and counting!

~Shanny, S.China ML
Shanghai write-ins?

C'mon, Shanghailanders (and Shanghainese) -- anyone up for some Shanghai write-ins? It seems to me to be one of the fun parts of participating in NaNoWriMo -- I think it would be great fun to actually meet up in real life with others who are going through this!

How about next Tuesday, November 20, 7 p.m.? Maybe in the private room at the back of Kommune on Taikang Lu, if they'll let us reserve it? (Otherwise, anyplace central & quiet is fine with me).
Chinese names--can anyone help!

Hi, does anyone know if Mei Lan would be a good given name for a Chinese girl born in southern China (place undecided) sometime in the 1870s? Her family name is Chen.

Also, anyone familiar with Shantou know if there was ever a passenger ship route between Shantou and the Western US in the same time period?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any help. ;)

Yeah, there's only a couple of us, but wouldn't it be cool if we could get together? I'm in the Wudaokou area, so transportation isn't a problem for me - where're the rest of you guys? Addit, I've classes weekday AMs, but am pretty much free weekday afternoons and weekends (though those're free game to outings - I never know what people're going to plan for weekends).

Anyway, I'd love to meet other NaNoers out here! I hope we can figure something out. :D
Nearing Week 2 - How Are We All Doing?

Hey everyone!!! It's nearly week 2 in China! YAY! How is everyone's novels coming? How's your word counts? Everyone should have around 10-12K words. If you're near there, keep up the good work! If you're above that, awesome job! Keep goin'!!

If you're one of those people who thinks they have something better to do during NaNo, like WORK, and you're word count is down.... GET CRACKIN'! (Just kidding!) No but really. It's bad to slack now. trust me, next thing you know, it's week three, and you're pulling all-nighters trying to finish. A few sentences here and there throughout the day will do wonders to your word count!

Also, try attending a write-in if there's on in your area. Just let everyone know your word count is short, and they will get on your case like a bunch of rabid-hungry-monkeys and get you up to where you should be.

If you have any questions or concerns, or want me to personally give you email kicks-in-the-butt, let me know.

BTW, how ARE your novels coming? Mine's personally fallen apart, but I'm still plugging away at it. And yay typos!
What's Everyone Writing?

Just for fun, tell us what you're writing, (or whatever inkling of an idea you have) maybe what inspired you, and how long you've been writing. You don't need to if you're worried about people stealing your ideas, but we're all really good here, and I honestly don't think anyone else would take them (Because you could turn around and take theirs!).

Ah, I was going to post mine, but I realized it's on my laptop in the bedroom and I'm too lazy at the moment to get it. ^^;

Ok, I just signed up for MSN (via Meebo - cool service!). My contact address is chinadaver@yahoo.com.

Also, I guess I didn't introduce myself at all last time. I've tried (and failed) NaNo twice before, but I haven't done it for about 3 years or so. When I did it, I was living in Taiwan, but this is my first year (and last) in mainland China.
