Last year we did them on the weekends and I think Tuesday and Thursday? I think that was it. Anyway, I think three ‘official’ write-ins worked pretty well, everyone seemed to like that idea and it seemed to give everyone enough opportunity to come to a write-in so we can repeat that this year. Punchcards WILL be back this year, so that’s some extra incentive to come out to events ;) So let us know roughly what works for you guys so we can start getting some dates on the calendar.

By the way, if people want to hold write-ins on other days that’s fine too, and either Gale or I would be more than happy to throw it up on the calendar for you.

Please not Thursday!
How am I supposed to make it to every write-in if they're on Thursdays? :P
[Yep, still trying to make it to all of them even though I'll be in Indiana for some of it.
You don't know me. I can do it!]

Every other day is awesome for me, though!

I'm the exact opposite... if it stays at Williams at the pier, I won't attend a single write in.

I think more than one location should be selected. so that people who can't make it to the peir won't be left out.

its ok, I can still make the parties, but yeah until they make a Burlington chapter I probably will never do too well making write-ins. Someone else mentioned being from Burlington maybe we can do something.

Luckily we'll have more than one location! :)

This year I'd like to keep them fairly spaced out throughout the city, so that it makes it easier for people to attend at least one of the write-ins. William's on the pier is a popular location, so we'll keep that again. As much as I'd love to be downtown, there just isn't much that's accomodating to our group. Unless someone knows of a possible location, and if you do please NaNomail me the details. The big upside to meeting at Infusions when it was open was that it was nice and central to most people. I'd like to eventually have something as equally accomodating, but until then William's on the pier will have to take its place.

Our second location I'm thinking should be up on the mountain, perhaps at the Starbuck's on Upper James. We used this place a few years ago much to folks' enjoyment. Third, I know last year we also had write-ins at the William's in Westdale. I wasn't present at those write-ins last year, but overall did that work okay as a location?

A write-in is where we meet at a specific location and write. We do a bit of socializing, we have word wars and sometimes prizes.

Yes, I think that the Williams in Westdale works pretty well - it's a bit smaller than the one near the harbour, but usually possible to snag a table, and it seems to have a bit more creative energy, maybe from all the students hanging out there.

One note is that there aren't many electrical outlets to steal, so that's something that laptop owners should bear in mind. Now that I've got my new netbook, that shouldn't be a problem for me - I think it's battery would last more than four hours, with the wifi on! :)

I think last year's write-ins were Tuesdays and Wednedays. Pretty sure they weren't on Thursdays, as Captain Patrick has choir on Thursday and couldn't have brought me, and I was at just about all of them.

I *think* it was Tuesdays at the Pier Williams and Wednesdays at the Westdale Williams.

That's right because I have class on Weds but I always did the Tuesday ones. I am hoping for the same this year!

A word war is a timed word count competition - you agree on writing for ten minutes, say, and compare counts at the end to see who won. We used to have a tradition of going around the circle before the war began to say what kind of scene we had to write for the war, which I think was a good one.

And - I think I can probably make write-ins for any particular weeknight... which fact I refuse to be depressed by right now. ;)

I'm confused. It sounds like a write-in is scheduled for November 3rd but I don't see any confirmation on this thread and according to my little old browser the calendar is blank. Is there a new calendar link this year?

There is a write-in on November 3rd. I'll be giving everyone a paper schedule of all our write-ins at the Kick-Off, but I also have the Google calendar linked in the Regional Info. Try that and see if that one works for you. If not let me know okay?

By the way, just WHERE is this Starbucks on Upper James? I tried looking for it on google - they place it somewhere near the Mandarin, but I couldn't actually see a Starbucks sign with Google street view. ;)

Edit: Sorry, thinking about SECOND CUP.

It's before the Mandarin. It's where the movie cinema used to be. Look for The Brick, Burger King, Lick's, Premiere Fitness and you'll be in the right place. It's not hard to miss.

If you're taking the bus, it'll be the stop right after you cross Stonechurch Rd.

Argle bargle. Sorry to waste your time, Welestra. I was on my goofy roommate's goofy PC which doesn't show the fancy scrolly calendar thing. The awesome Ziggy pointed it out to me on my awesome laptop. I'm now in the loop. Thanks! :-p

Starbucks Upper James is across the street from Licks/The Brick (that's where the Second Cup location is). It's located at the corner of Upper James and Regina Drive (the lights where you enter the plaza for Winners, Marks Work Wearhouse, Mandarin and the former Mexicali Rosas and is across the street from the Honda dealership.

For those on HSR, it will be the 2nd bus stop after Stonechurch Road.

Here's a Google maps link for your reference. (yes, I had to look it up to find it, although I've been there a thousand times myself... i found it hard to place it too!)

I can't make it to William's tonight. I desperately want to but I've been home sick from school today with a cough and a stuffed up chest. I am pretty sure it's just a cold but I don't want to be a hypocrite and come out when I keep telling everyone else to stay home when they aren't well!

Good luck writing, I will be working from here so if you are online, I'll try to be a good virtual presence, plus I'll miss y'alls company.

Rhonda.

I'm sorry you had to miss last night, Rhonda. I hope you get well soon!

I just wanted to let people know that I will not be at the Williams (Westdale) tonight. I kinda wrecked my neck last night, and it doesn't look like I have a ride. It's close enought that I could, in theory, cab it, but I think I should baby my neck for the rest of today.

Keep writing, everyone! waterski

Me and 4 Glass are coming to the write-in this afternoon (we'll probably be the ones who look around aimlessly trying to find everyone, since neither of us have been to a write in before). And we're bringing on of my friends. She's not doing NaNo because she doesn't have enough time, but she writes, and thought this would be a good reason not to do homework, lol. Just so people know we're coming :D

Hey guys! :)
So I'm new to all this... And I was planning on going up to Starbucks for write ins, I was going to get a ride from my mom (I can't drive yet :S) but I don't think I will today. I was also wondering if we HAVE to bring out laptops, because I usually write in my notebook while I'm away from home, then type it up on my lappie once I get home. My laptop's not the greatest, so I'm kind of concerned about hauling it up to Starbucks.
I don't know if I can make it to the other write ins at Williams. Sorry D=
Next year, when I can drive for myself, I'll be sure to make it to as many write ins as I can. ^_^

Some people do use laptops at write-ins, but others use good ole pen and paper. It's entirely up to you. Write-ins are fairly unstructured. Don't think school; think a group of good friends getting together to encourage each other in their writing!

I hope, even though you can't make today's write-in, that you'll be able to manage some of the others this November!

Welcome to NaNo! And welcome to Hamilton region!
