Hello and welcome back Shenandoah Valley authors! We also want to extend a warm welcome to our first year NaNoWriMo participants and to all of those returning Wrimos who are joining us from another region.

We are very excited about this year's event and have already begun our preparations for this season's fun-filled month of writing and mayhem. Check out our regional calendar of events located at the top of our forum. Our region covers a lot of territory and as our special POCs (Point of Contacts) in your local area schedule kick-offs, meet-ups and write-ins they will be added to the calendar as well. So keep checking in throughout October and November for updates!

For now, we would love for you to introduce yourselves! A lot of us know each other very well by now so this may seem repetitive but we are expecting a lot of new authors this year so let's get to know each other!

Happy noveling!

Your Co-MLs,

Susan & LaMishia

Location: Harrisonburg, VA
Occupation: College Professor
Writing Experience: Lots writing technical and hobby related articles as well as having been a columnist for a couple of computer magazines in the past.

Interests: Lots of hobbies related to computer science, just science in general, as well as science fiction which I like to read, also a C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton fan (big time). I've never written long fictional work and think that would be fun and a couple years ago I read No Plot No Problem which I thought was fun. Big fan of Robert Heinlein and David Weber.

Never actually participated in NaNoWriMo but thinking seriously about doing it this year for the sheer helluv it. I write with great facility and don't really have a problem finishing what I write as long as it is non-fiction. (first two of Heinlein's 5 rules of writing) Fiction is a bit of a different matter since it requires some expertise not needed in non-fiction, like character development, dialogue, plot development and so forth. I think I can do it, but I've never really done anything but snatches of stories. So it's a fun challenge.

I'd love to meet other writers and share the joy and craft of writing.

Cheers, Ray

I so excited about NaNo, I can't stand it!!!!!!!!

There, now that I've got that off my mind... hee hee...

I've participated in NaNo for the last two years, and had the most amazing time! Can't wait to get started organizing this year's novel! It's gonna be so much fun!

Welcome back, all you seasoned Nano-ers, and welcome to all of our new participants! Get ready for the ride of your life!

Writing: I'm desperately looking for Warrenton Wrimos or anyone nearby to write with. There are way too many distractions at home; get me outta here!

I'm a newbie and I'm terrified and elated all at the same time. I barely know what to do with myself, except write, or course. I write and I read and write and read and apparently I really need a new hobby. If you're in Warrenton and ready to write please let me know! I'm currently working on an outline and basically trying to figure out what the $$!*@*!! I'm doing. Company would be great!

Writing Experience: Not very much. I've done essays for school, and I took a creative writing class in high school. I also tried and failed miserably at NaNoWriMo last year.

Like it says up above, I don't really have an impressive amount of writing experience under my belt. But I really like novels and I have always wanted to write one. So I am hoping that I am up to the challenge this year.

Writing Experience: Writing as a hobby since elementary school and considering majoring in English with a minor in theatre or creative writing. I am also trying to be contributing writer for the JMU school newspaper.

Interests: Besides writing, I enjoy really enjoy theatre, so I'm hoping to participate in some plays this year. :]

I'm not sure in lounging in a dorm room will make NaNo easier this year or not, but it would definitely be cool to meet some people from the college who are also participating. In the past, procrastination, writer's block, and a major computer crash have prevented me from finishing NaNo, and I've been doing this since 2006, always almost making it. This year is going to be it. It HAS to be.

I'm guessing that you're a JMU professor? Or do you teach elsewhere in Harrisonburg like EMU or BRCC?

Howdy!

I am Tyler, this will be my fifth NaNo, and my third in Winchester. In real life I am a father of five and a network administrator. My hobbies include writing, and chasing kids. Not much time left for anything else. As a writer I have had a few pieces picked up by an online e-zine called the Piker Press. The rest of my creative writing ends up languishing in my blog, where I dream that someday, some bored publisher will see it and offer me a multi-million dollar contract. Or at least someone will be amused/interested/not disgusted by something that I wrote.

I generally only make it to the Halloween Night Midnight Write-In and Pancake Fest during NaNo, not (entirely) because I am anti-social, but because of the aforementioned busy family and work life. I promise Susan every year to try and make it to more events, but... well... you know. Maybe this year.

Feel free to send me a NaNo mail if you have a burning question you think only I can answer. Or a smart-alec comment, or even a link to a funny cat Youtube video. Whatever. I just like getting mail.

Welcome back to NaNo!

Hi Tori ... I'm a Bridgewater College Computer Science professor.
http://www.bridgewater.edu/~rschneid and a general geekazoid ... BS Physics, MS Engineering Science, PhD Information Technology and a lot of experience as a leader of multi-disciplinary science teams developing things. Worked for government, large industry, small industry and academia. Really like to write and have done a lot of it.

When you love to write you just write in lots of different venues.

Cheers, Ray

Just keep on keeping on. The key to NaNo like I've done it, but based on my long experience writing, is just to write and write through writer's block. Cheers, Ray

Writing Experience: I have been writing since I was a little girl. My first work of fiction was called "Charlie and Freckles." It was a story about two house flies and a little girl who were the best of friends until Freckles met his demise under a flyswatter belonging to the little girl's mother. Okay so it wasn't fiction, but the traumatic experience got me writing and I have been doing so ever since. I write short stories and this year will be my fourth novel. I like to experiment with different genres from Magical Realism to Southern Gothic.

Something about me: I enjoy writing, quilting, and reading. I like to go for long walks visiting new places. Road trips are my thing. I have found that Geocaching is one of the most exciting ways to go exploring. The best time to go to Busch Gardens is during Halloween. I love Christmas, museums, the beach, music, and oysters steamed on the half shell with melted butter, a bit of cocktail sauce and horseradish. This year I want to learn to paint. Oh, and I go by Susan...occasionally Susie...but never, ever Sue!

I can't wait until November 1st!

Location: Harrisonburg, VA (for school at least)
Occupation: Full-time student at JMU - I'm a junior history major with an interdisciplinary social sciences and secondary education minor.

Writing Experience: I write poems all the time, but I don't foray very often into the world of prose. I've written a few short stories that I have been told are good, but the longest one by far was 17 pages, so...eh, not that experienced. However, given my status as a student (especially a history major), I write all the time for my classes. I like to think that I have grammar and punctuation down pat, though of course now that I've said that, I'll have an error and not notice it.

Something about me: Well, I'm originally from South Jersey, but my family moved to Chantilly, and then a month later I started school at JMU, so I consider Harrisonburg my new home. I love t-shirts and have recently discovered how wonderful hummus is. Did I mention that I'm random?

Something about me: I'm currently unemployed with the hopes that situation will change before we kick off NaNo. I'm working on one novel while I research this year's NaNo. Its tentative working title is "Daughter of the King" and it is the "faction" story of my ancestors, Andre and Jeanne, who emigrated to Quebec in the mid-17th century.

Occupation: JMU senior, majoring in Art History and minoring in French.
Writing Experience: I've been writing fiction since high school, used to be a Writing and Rhetoric minor, and have done NaNo every year since 2006. And the paper due in my Romanticism Seminar a couple of weeks ago was in the form of a dialogue, so that was awesome. I started trying my hand at screenwriting in the spring, and now one of my friends has me doing comic scripts as well.

Since it worked so well last year, I have a strict policy of not thinking about my novel until halfway through October. That'll be a bit harder since I just came up with an idea this morning. Luckily (?) I have a research paper due just before Thanksgiving that I can use to distract myself until then.

I'm the POC for JMU. I think that also includes Harrisonburg, but I'm not sure. We didn't have any townies at write-ins last year, but you're all welcome to come!

I think my novel this year should have time travel... No, gotta stop there!

I wrote in my dorm room freshman year, and--in that case--it was a terrible idea. My roommate was either on the phone or trying to talk to me. I wrote in lounges and a single room a lot the next year, but I have to say my favorite was TDU, it was good background noise and a supply of expendable characters. I think I'll be using the new Starbucks (Carrier) a lot this year, and not just because I have a friend working there :-)

If you want to meet other WriMos, I would highly suggest a JMU write-in! Also, we could do a meet-and-greet before hand? I don't think I've heard of one taking place before Halloween, but it would certainly make recognizing each other easier once it starts... (I'm the JMU POC, by the way. Feel free to nanomail me if you have ideas/feedback/etc)

Of course this is the year! No worries, we'll get you there.

Well, as my username says, I'm Maggie.

I'm a Junior (maybe? credit counting gets confusing) English major at JMU, and I love reading and writing. I'm really looking forward to NaNo again this year.

*waves upwards* Arrowsforpens is the one who really got me into NaNo, although I'd been interested before. She's the one who kept me going my last two tries. I did NaNo in 2007 and again in 2008. Unfortunately, I still haven't managed to finish a novel, but each time I've gotten more written and had a lot of fun.

As for this year, I'm torn between finishing last year's novel, my noir!librarian 'verse, and my Epic Crossdressing Lesbian Romance of Piratical Proportions. We'll see how that goes.

Peace, y'all, and happy writing.

A first I mistakenly read your username as "maginotmegan," and I spent a few moments wondering where the line was I wasn’t supposed to cross and if it was archaically defended.

Occupation: Computer Tech
Writing Experience: Co-written five novels with more un-finished WiP's. currently writing on another novel that's more urban fantasy than fantasy.

Interests: Writing, reading, crafts, swordplay, digital art/graphic design, gaming, my two kids, and family. (and probably more than that, but I can't think of it all right now, lol).

I haven't technically participated, though I signed up to participate. Usually the writing is co-written with my fiance'... I also have a habit of forgetting to upload the info bit by bit or at all. Yep, I'm forgetful, I admit it. We've been writing fantasy and are currently trying to land an agent (some nibbles, but no luck so far... but we refuse to give up.).

Occupation: Reporter
Writing Experience: News and features reporting for weekly and daily newspapers in metropolitan, community and college newsrooms for five years. Churning 2 to 4 stories per day (and some long-term projects sprinkled throughout) this past year.

NaNoWriMo daily word counts don't intimidate me, but to date, my piddily fiction efforts have always felt like shrouded autobiographical vignettes. Now I think I've found a character sufficiently removed from who I am.

My project goes alongside my wife's redoubled efforts to return to her art: binding handmade books. We've overhauled a spare room to serve as a studio/writing space and look forward to new non-work-related efforts.

I'm on a whim, but can't stop thinking about the possibilities.

Writing experience: I love to write and have been writing for years. Twice I've won an award for students at the various local schools. I've taken a creative writing class at my high school. I participated in NaNoWriMo last year and won (50k goal, just like everyone else! Yes!), but sadly did not finish my novel. Before that, though, summer after 7th grade for me, I started a novel that I eventually did finish, and I started on a sequel that never really got anywhere... *shifty eyes* I love to write poetry and any type of fiction (although most of my stories are novel-length ideas, too large for short stories), but I have a problem with motivating myself to write and with persistence to the end of a story. I've been really having a problem getting myself to sit down and write lately, so I'm hoping this NaNoWriMo will really help out.

Interests: Everything. Ummm, let's see... Clinical and educational psychology, particularly cognitive-behaviour therapy and anxiety disorders. Also, I'm interested in intelligence and how it works. I'm interested in linguistics and conlanging (creating your own language - yes, I know, I'm weird. Deal with it. :D ). History, religion, books (reading, reading, READING!), philosophy. Learning. Roleplaying games such as D&D, comics, music (Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, Hawk Nelson), hanging out with my awesome friends, playing with my puppy. Travel, different cultures. Pretty much anything artistic (I might not be good, but I'm probably interested in it or interested in trying it, at the very least). Theater. Clarinet. Lots more. I'm interested in just about everything.

I am hesitant to commit to this year's event because I've been jinxed in the past. Last year I became terribly ill on Halloween day and it stuck with me throughout the event. I even managed to sprain a finger in the 11th hour and was unable to type or write the remaining 15, 000 words. That said, I am quietly hoping to make it through this year....

Hi!

This is my second NaNoWriMo, and my first from my new location in Fishersville. The first week of November is rife with non-writing obligations, so I'm hoping catch-up won't be an issue. Last year, I worked full time and could only write 17 out of the 30 days--and ended up over 50,000 words, so I'm hopeful.

I hope there's a write-in nearby.

Good luck to all.

Hi Maggie
I do not know if you got my first message. My email is linked to this region and I saw your message and tried to reply.
Writingscifi posted a message on here about our local write in/kick off. We are a small group in the Fishersville/Waynesboro/Staunton/Stuart's Draft area. At least three of us try to meet at least once a month during the year. There are more in our little group but usually only two or three of us can manage a get together. On 10/31/09 at 2:00 pm we are going to have a kickoff at BAMM (Books a Million) in the Target Mall area over by Walmart in Waynesboro. You are welcome to attend. We will be in the coffee area (yes, there is coffee!!) at one of the tables. I will be wearing a Nanowrimo Tshirt and zipup jacket. I do not think you will miss us. It will probably be Owen, Michelle, and me (Cat). Come out if you feel like it and keep in touch. We try to have writeins at least once or twice a week. We all have different schedules so we never know who will manage to make it. There are others. Anyone reading this is welcome to attend. I am not joking that I am the Susan Lucci of Nano (and Scriptfrenzy)...something always happens to keep me from finishing. But each year I try and try again. One day it will happen for me or not....just love participating. Good luck on your project. Hope to meet you soon. If you decide not to....it is okay...and best wishes. cat
PS. WritingScifi posted the message on Countdown to Kickoff....the Halloween kickoffs....hope this helps. cat

Hi guys ... I want to attend something on the big kickoff day. This will be my first NaNoWriMo although I'm the guy that put Owen onto it in the first place and I was very impressed that he finished last year, especially when he told me that he did about half of it in the last week.

I'm not sure I want to drive all the way down to Waynesboro for a really late night affair. I'd be more likely to come to write-ins during WriMo that don't involve late hours. But I'll have to look at the driving time, etc.

Right now on the 31st I'm thinking about doing the IHOP in Harrisonburg if they end up having a WriMo meetup there for the kick off.

I'd love to hang with you guys, at least if I get off to a good start. I'm going to quit real easy if it interferes too much with my real job, but I also think it will be lots of fun. I'm a pretty fast typist and compose narrative at a great rate so I don't think I'll have all that much problem doing the WriMo thing ... we'll see since I've not written all that much fiction.

I'm interested in developing my plotting, character development, and other fiction related skills. I'm pretty good at dialogue and description I think. Plot devices and characters are probably my greatest weakness, but since I've done very little fiction writing I'm not really sure.

Look forward to meeting you all.
Cheers, Ray

We will be having a Halloween kickoff 10/31/09 2pm at the Books a Million Book store at the Waynesboro Target Mall off the highway near Walmart. It will be in the cafe. I will be in Nanowrimo wear. Anyone in the Waynesboro, Fishersville, Stuart's Draft, Staunton etc area are welcome to come. We do not know when we will have our write ins. Everyone is welcome. Since I am on call overnight most of the week Harrisonburg is too far for me. But whatever works for everyone else. All my best to everyone for this year's Nano. cat (radcat38)

Hey!
NaNo is going to be a lot of fun if you need to work on plot devices. Simply because you must come up with so many off the top of your head. I have found that I can come up with the most contrived and unbelievable stuff during November. When you are trying to get in your daily quota of words and it is 1 in the morning, and you have to be at work at 7 and you absolutely MUST get your characters to Miami to meet up with the drug lord who will take them captive, but you just CANNOT figure out how to get them there from the chicken farm in Montana where they have been working on their nunchuk skilz - well, you find a plot device and you don't CARE how silly it is...

That is the beauty of NaNo - by abandoning the inner editor in favor of the inner accountant for thirty days you suddenly find that an alien ship stopping for a restroom break in Montana before the last leg of their trip to Miami is a perfectly acceptable way for your characters to arrive in time for their kidnapping.

Of course, when you go back to re-write AFTER November, you will have to come up with something a bit more acceptable. But for now - the aliens are lifesavers!

You will do as well as you allow yourself to do. And you just might find it a bit addicting if you can really catch the spirit of it.

Remember - It's not about completing a publisher-ready work. It's about finishing. And having fun.

Good Night!

The sheriff was frozen by his cruiser, hypnotized by the pulsating light in the crisp, clear, cold Montana evening. A humming sound made his face throb as the light grew brighter and the humming grew ever louder.

The cracking sound of the police cruiser's radio penetrated over the throbbing hum, "Bob are you there? We're getting phone calls from all over out that way that there's some kind of lights in the sky. Check it out will you." The radio fell silent.

"Bob, are you there?"

A blue glow from the hovering space craft cast a harsh stark shadow as Bob's body became ever more rigid and then lifted into the air. The tractor beam from the Altairian space craft was the latest model, especially developed for alien abductions. The aliens feelers trembled in anticipation as Bob was lifted into the air and slowed, ever so slowly drawn up through the open hatch into the sampling capsule where a hypersonic spray put him into stasis.

"Crash" The ancient clunker Paul Driszig was driving came to a screeching halt. The right front tire folded in and torn off its rim because the steering knuckles had finally collapsed. He got out of the care and shone the flashlight on the damaged tire kicking it in frustration.

"Damn" He shivered a little in the cold and pulled the half empty flask of Jack Daniels from his pocket. He dropped the flashlight onto the front seat and took a long drag on the bottle. It was going to be a cold walk back to town. Suddenly a blue light ...

Well anyway ... the flying saucer with Bob and Paul flies to Miami and drops them off slightly the worse for wear.

Cheers, Ray
