I had all these great plans for the kickoff party this year...but then they just sorta didn't pan out. In previous years we have had kick-off parties at restaurants (Applebees and the North Chas Grill) and at people's homes (specifically, mine), but this year I was thinking of doing something different. And since this year's theme is Camp NaNoWriMo (see the Store: https://store.lettersandlight.org/merchandise/camp-nanowrimo-t-shirt ") I thought we might go camping.
You see, I really wanted to go camping for the Night Of Writing Dangerously. But then it occured to me that some people actually don't hand-write entire books and that they might appreciate an electrical outlet (or twelve) to plug their laptops into. But there won't be any writing going on at the Kick-Off, because you aren't allowed to write yet. So....
Who wants to eat SMORES at the Kickoff?
Of course, if you have an idea for the kickoff - or would like to be awesome and host it - let me know. Because otherwise I'm dragging as many of you as I can out into the woods for Smores and Apple Cider (yes they do to go together!) and kumbaya.
Speaking of which... can any of you play kumbaya?
EDIT: SMORES SUCK - MEXICAN FOOD WINS! The Kick-Off will now be held at Los Reyes on Rivers Ave, North Chuck (the Best Buy/Barnes and Nobel shopping area), 5pm THIS SATURDAY (24th)! Hope to see you all there!

Sounds fun! I'm learning to play guitar and I'm sure I could learn kumbaya by then. ;D
Only problem is convincing the rents to let me go off with a bunch of strangers.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem with my husband. He doesn't like the idea of me going off into the woods with a bunch of Wrimos (he is not a fan of NaNo - he says November is his least favorite month). So maybe we will end up having it in my backyard and roast marshmellows in my fireplace or grill :P Or maybe we can just go for an evening picnic at one of the county parks....
So many options!

An evening picnic would be fun. ;) Or even the backyard thing. We have one of those fire pit things so the fire is contained and off the ground if you needed to pick it up and whatnot. I couldn't bring it in my car.

Oh my car would fit a fire pit - I may have to take you up on that.
I'm thinking an afternoon/evening picnic is the best idea, maybe out at one of the county parks. Anyone know of a good park to go picnic at? I've been to JI and MtP's county parks and either one of those would be good, but if you don't have a pass you would have to pay to get into the park. Any free parks around here?

Hmm... I know in Goose Creek we have a park next to the Kasey Center that is free to get in. They have a little pavilion thing with bathrooms too, but I think you need to actually rent out the pavilion for the restroom keys. There is also North Charleston Wannamaker County Park and it's only a dollar to get in. I'm sure all of the Nano's can scrape up a dollar to get in, if not, we can always lend them one. They would close at sunset, but they'll just close the gates and stop letting people in, so we could probably stay later if we wanted to. Best thing to do if you want to do it there is talk to the park office. http://www.ccprc.com/index.aspx?NID=70 is the webpage with more info on it.

I don't think it would be okay to my parent if I go on a camping trip with people I don't know:( Sorry. So I think the park thing would be better and more people could come (Hopefully). Post details soon!!!! I could maybe bring some food. Yummm!!!

Yeah, I've decided camping just wont work. But the picnic will - I just have to find a good park to do it at :)
I may be able to get the park to let us in for free, but we will see. I can probably pay for anyone who can't pay for themselves (or we can carpool - I can get a whole car-ful of people in for free).

As far as I know, all of the county parks are only a dollar to get in. And as someone mentioned, that's not a lot to scrape together.
My sister (who's also participating in NaNo this year) and me will be out of town the weekend of the 24th for my birthday. But, if that's the only weekend that's convenient we'll just have to miss the kick off party.
I'm looking forward to hopefully attending an event this year!!!

I really want to attend the kick off!! But, like writings_by_pam said, we will be out of town on the weekend of the 24th. Can we have a poll of when people are available? Or do more than one?

The 24th was just the date I put on the calendar so that we would have a date on the calendar. We can change it, but we don't have a lot of time (another reason I want to make a regional website - we don't have to wait for the Re-Up to start planning things).
However, I should mention that the 23rd-25th would be the best time for me. I can't do Halloween unless we did a daytime-only event because I have to get candy out to the kiddos.
Or, we can do what we did last year and I can host it at my place so I can hand out candy while we party, and eat smores off my grill :)

Well, if we want to rent an actual covered pavilion for the evening it will be around $450 at Wanamaker. I'm going to check on their tent rental (I doubt it will be that much cheaper though), and if that wont work we can truly make it a picnic and throw down a big blanket and not bother renting anything.
It looks like so far Saturdays are the best days for people. So now we just have to decide on a weekend.
A. 17th @ Wanamaker - this is NEXT weekend. We would have to plan this ASAP.
B. 24th @ Wanamaker - this is the best weekend for me.
C. 31st @ my house - I'll have to get my hubby to say yes to this. Or we can do a daytime picnic that ends before the kiddos start Trick-Or-Treating.
Please let me know which you would prefer by posting the letter of your choice. If you post C, please let me know if a daytime picnic would work (we would have to end in time for me to get home and hand out candy) or if you want to help me convince my hubby to host it at our house :)

Well I just learned that my aunt, uncle, and cousin will be coming in on the twenty-third for my brother's birthday. Seeing as my best friend's party is that night, plus I'll probably be staying over at her house, and with church and judgment house on Sunday, I might not be able to get out of the house on Saturday. :(

It looks like the 24th is winning by 2 to 1 over the 17th or 31st. I'll keep the voting open until Thurs (that should be time enough to plan if the 17th should magically win).
I'm thinking we'll have everyone bring an easy dish to share (pasta salad, little sandwiches, anything that will be easy to make and doesn't need to be re-heated at the park), and I'll bring the smores, drinks, and plates/silverware.
If you have any food allergies, let us know now! And also post what you can bring so we don't have five plates of the same thing :)
