So, anyone else braving the firehose in search of literary glory? I tried to organize MIT write-ins lack year, but no one responded. This year I'm hoping that getting the word out earlier will help. I'd really like to have a midnight kickoff party (Halloween costumes optional), but even if you know you can't make that, please post here so I know you're out there.

I'm braving the firehose! MIT write-ins would be awesome, as would a midnight kickoff party. :)

Great! At least this year I'll have company :-). I guess I haven't actually introduced myself in this thread. I'm Naomi, and I'm a junior in course 6-3.
I haven't picked a place for write-ins yet, but the midnight kickoff will have to be somewhere we can actually get into at midnight. I live in East Campus, so we could meet on my hall (if there aren't too many of us) or in Talbot. I'm also a keyholder at MITSFS, so that's another option.

I'm Manishika; I'm a sophomore in 6-1. I live in Random, so we could meet here too, if that's convenient. Anyway, it'd be cool to meet someone else doing NaNo at MIT... I did it last year but couldn't convince anyone to do it with me. (Something about psets...)

I brought up the possibility of MITSFS write-ins at Friday's meeting and everyone seems OK with it. I think it's better to go with a publicly accessible location rather than a dorm if we can, so that non-MIT WriMos can also come. Plus I have to spend two hours every Saturday at MITSFS anyway, so it's personally really convenient.

Update on the midnight kickoff party: It turns out that Pumpkin Drop, which is run by my hall, will be on Halloween (and cleanup will probably run past midnight), so I won't be able to set up an actual write-in. However, if any MIT WriMos want to come by EC 1W after Pumpkin Drop, we can maybe do a mini-write-in.

I'm a recent MIT alum, but I still live in the area, and often frequent MIT campus (I may or may not be using a cluster right now... *shifty eyes*). I'll probably be on campus for Pumpkin Drop/Halloween parties, so I'd totally be up for a post-festivities write-in.
edit: you know, as long as you're not too weirded out by crufty old alums. I'm not too creepy, promise.

Stickmen has its own little group of cruft who still practically live here, so it's not like anyone will judge. The main issue is that Pumpkin Drop actually starts at midnight, so I can't say how late it will be before we're done picking up pumpkin shards, and--no offense intended--it's probably not a good idea for me to let anyone in when most of the 1W residents will be outside on cleanup duty. Thus I'm still not sure if the after-midnight kickoff thing is entirely feasible, awesome as it would be.

OK, finally some concrete details! I will be holding write-ins from 3 to 5 on Saturdays (except the one after Thanksgiving) at the MIT Science Fiction Society (MITSFS). Hopefully you MIT people know where it is, but I'll post directions and other details in the Cambridge forum.

Hey guys,
My name is KIP. I'm an MIT alum '99, course 2 and currently a first year Sloan MBA grad student. This is my 4th NaNoWriMo but my first in the Boston area. I loved writing with my old Maryland writing group and am looking forward to meeting and writing with you guys.
I write original Sci Fi. During Nano I'll be the guy with the hourglass. ;-)
Cheers,
KIP

Hey Everyone,
I'm Giulia and I'll be writing from Italy. I spent last year studying/working in MIT and now I'm living in Bologna (Italy). Since Italian WriMos are rare (there is only 1 other active person in Bologna!) I thought I'd check in here and try to pick up motivation from some hard working Mit WriMos.
Good luck to all and say hi to Cambridge for me,
Giulia

I never went to MIT, but I was a member of HSSP/ESP back in the late 70's and lived in Senior House for a short period in the 80's. In the 90's I was a member of the MITFDC and redesigned their t-shirt. I spent many a happy hour curled up on a couch in the SF library reading back in the day so I'm looking forward to some quality writing time in there this year.

i'm from the cruft circle too, just graduated in june, still living and working in the area, and always in need of more motivation. i have the added pressure of finishing my novel before nov 22 when i'll go out of the country (and probably won't be writing much over seas), so any and all quality writing time before then (organized or disorganized) would be wonderful.

It's in the Stratton Student Center aka Building 20 (because MIT likes to number its buildings) . It's officially at 84 Massachusetts Avenue, though it is set a little back from the street. It's a few blocks before the Harvard Bridge (which crosses the Charles River on Mass Ave) if you're coming from Harvard or Central Square, a few blocks after the bridge if you are coming from Boston. The #1 bus, which runs between Harvard Square and Dudley Station in Boston stops almost directly in front of it.
The Science Fiction Society (MITSFS) library is on the 4th floor.
Hope this helps.

If you take the #1 bus, it stops in front of 77 Mass Ave or across the street at 84 Mass Ave (the student center).

By the way, although I'll be out of town next Saturday for Thanksgiving, feel free to stop by MITSFS and write anyway! Kendra will be holding her 5-7 hours as usual, and I'll try to get someone to cover 3-5 for me--no guarantess on that yet, though.
