I've noticed that we have a large bit of high schoolers doing NaNoWriMo here in Atlanta, from both here n the forum and from what I've seen on the facebook group. So, NaNoLanta high schoolers, consider this your open thread and hangout to talk about anything from plot help to why-can't-parents-and-or-teachers-understand-this-is-more-important-to-me-than-homework-and-even-discussing-it-is-taking-away-from-my-word-count!

So, old folks like me, let's keep out of here and let the high schoolers have almost free reign (sorry! still have to moitor to make sure nothing fishy's happening :-D)

Hello to my fellow high schoolers! I'm Selene, or Erin in real life, a junior at a Gwinnett County Public School, and this will be my third year doing NaNo.

Who else is pumped for this November? I am!

Hey there! :) I'm a senior at a homeschool high school (long story) in a different county than my own. I think I might be just a little crazy to do NaNo in my senior year with college visits and applications and all my classes, but this is my third year doing NaNo - there's no way I'd miss it!

So, do any of you have ideas about your plots yet, or are you the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type of Wrimos? I flew my first year and burned out at 13k, so I learned that I have to have a direction planned before I start. XD My second year, I made it to 50k and still had no idea how I'd gotten where I was. I threw my outline out the figurative window after week two. This year, I expect much the same thing to occur; I'm writing adventure for the first time!

I've been writing stories a whole lot before deciding I'd participate in NaNo, and I find that planning helps a whole lot more... D: If I do stuff spur-of-the-moment it's usually unsuccessful. Within the last three months I've read both Angela's Ashes and 'Tis by Frank McCourt. His style of writing has inspired me to write in the perspective of a character about his own life. I'm hoping it'll turn out well.

Well, and getting a book and making a parody might work. I could use the plot of a book and make it into a zombie book, say like a Jane Austin book???? Less sweat and tears, maybe?

My name is Jessica, I'm a sophmore in highschool, and I'm terrified. (:

I'm going to be taking a role play plot in progress and making it into a workable book-plot for when this all starts. A dark circus filled with vampires, zombies, shapeshifters, witches, face-eating clowns, etc. (Needless to say this extensive character list is overwhelming me already.)
Glad to know that there are people on here that did this when they were my age, it take a lot of the pressure off me. And I'm being told everything I need to know by a seventh grader, so I really don't think age should matter.

Oh yes, I ramble. Excuse me for that.

Jessica, I did something similar last year!

I have a character on a forum role play site (Wanderlust! Okay, shameless plug over) that I have played for going on five years and he was really cool but everyone always asks how he got all paranoid and angry, so I wrote out his personal biography, and made lots of really cool connections between everyone's characters...which then ended up in the forum and made things even more fun!

Good luck with yours, and have fun!

Post the link and they shall come!

The second I saw the red text I had to click it.
I'm starting completely over with characters for this. Its sad, really, leaving behind ones you've played for years. I was tempted to stop my plot just because I'd feel bad for leaving my oldest, most beloved character out. She just wouldn't fit.

Thanks so much, and good luck to you this year as well!

I'm pulling a sci-fi allegory out of nowhere this year. As compared to my previous writings [Fantasy. All of it.] this is very different. It's a distopian future where reality 'shifts' constantly, but no one ever notices them. The focus is on a group of people who know about the shifts and are trying to stop them. I'm excited about writing it, but the whole plot is way more in depth than anything I've ever written, so it'll be a toughie this year.

Any of you interested in the Gwinnett area interested in having a write-in? Maybe at on of the county libraries or a Starbucks? I've wanted to go to a write-in forever, but my parents are worry warts that think I'll be kidnapped or something. Something more local might be easier for me to get to!

So this topic just about died compared to the other topics. Call this a bump post, or call it a conversation starter. Either one works!

Are any of you telling your teacher(s) about NaNo this year? My friend and I have a list of all the L.A. teachers at our school, and have already told about half of them about NaNo. We just go in before classes start in the mornings, introduce ourselves, provide a flyer (from the NaNo website!) and ask that they tell their students. Some teachers really loved the idea. Some stared at us like we were crazy. But I'm sure someone will have done NaNo because of us!

Hello, I'm Maryam and I'm a junior at Berkmar High School. It's my third NaNo and I'm definitely excited. I hope my AP classes don't kill me. Actually, no, I'm doing fine in those. I hope Pre-Calculus doesn't kill me.

I'd be more than willing Selene, if my parents didn't feel the same way. Really, though, they'd let me if it were closer. I'm in the one Alpharetta neighborhood surrounded by John's Creek, so either city-area would work out.
My forum buddy and I would most likely go to one together to meet up, being penpals and all.

I really am glad there are other highschoolers that aren't just doing the young writers program, I feel like if I set my own goal I wouldn't be motivated.

And I have, somewhat, been telling people about it. All my friends know, and I've been posting a few flyers ariound the school. No way to tell if they are actually being read.

I'm Miriam, and I'm a junior at Druid Hills High School. This is my third year doing NaNoWriMo! My motto this year is the same as the Chudley Cannons from Harry Potter: "Let's just cross our fingers and hope for the best." :)

Wassup fellow high schoolers, this is Alex representin' them Newnan High School sen10rs. This is my second year doing NaNoWriMo and will, beyond a shadow of a doubt, be my first victory. I'm writing a science fiction novel because that's what I do best.

But that isn't the reason I'm here. I'm SUPER pumped about NaNoWriMo this year because I HAVE A CAR! I really hope I can attend some regional events, especially the write-ins in Newnan. I'd like to meet some fellow NaNo'ers . The only one I know IRL is a friend from Carrollton.

Add me on AIM if you want, Cobalt1792. I'm a pretty fun guy to talk to, but warning: I tend to talk in incomprehensible vocabulary from 4chan. That may kill my credibility, but meh. Anon. We are Legion.

Srsly. I'd like to talk to some NaNo'ers from Georgia, ESPECIALLY Newnan, or even just southside metro. Maybe some of you know my friends, who go to schools all over the Atlanta area because of a church camp I go to in Toccoa.

Wow. So I thought I'd be the only highschooler inside the perimeter doing NaNoWriMo this year. My name's Catherine and I'm a junior at Decatur. So Druid Hills, Lakeside see you at swim meets and Tri-Cities I'll see you at lacrosse games. So last year I started Nov. 8th and I think I stopped writing no less than five days after I started. I really don't remember. This year I'm really going to try, but I've got nothing in mind. I've got little dabbles that I've written before and I thought about working off them, but they're pretty old. I really haven't written anything for myself in a long time. So yeah, there's my word vomit... Let me know how you guys decided on what to write.

Hey! I'm Mary, a Senior at a little private school in Sugar Hill, near the Mall of Ga.

Not sure about my plot yet-I usually just let it form as I write =D

Any tips for getting your parents to let you attend the write-ins? They somehow think if I go to a write-in I'm going to be a) Robbed, b) Raped, and c) Kidnapped.... Wow.

Hey whitechica3 - sorry to drop in on the HS thread, but I can understand if your parents aren't wild about you meeting up with any aged strangers strange enough to to NaNoWriMo too :-) Feel free to invite your parents along to any write in. For example, there will be ones up at the mall of ga taco mac - maybe talk to them about going, they can get a table nearby and have a date, while you have a write in with the group there.
