Do I really need to say anything more? Drop a message here if you're in the Kelowna area, or attending UBC Okanagan! Who knows, maybe you'll find a new buddy.

Cheers!

Hi.
I'm not in Kelowna but I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to respond to this thread. :)

Good luck with your Nano's.

Hurrah for UBCO-ers! Write-ins should be easy to don on campus, methinks. (:

Uh ... I'm not a UBCO-er ... I went to Mac back in my day ... LOL ... however can't believe that there are no other writers in Kelowna that are participating in NaNoWriMo. Perhaps they wish to remain icognito!

I'm in Kelowna! Not a UBCO-er, either. This is my first NaNoWriMo :)

I'm here!
Crawling out of the metamorphical woods, dusting myself, but up for the count.

  • I dabbled the first year,
  • seriously tried the second year but got derailed,
  • hoping for third time lucky.

Refresh my memory ... how many words a day? How many words in total?

~1,666 words/day and 50,000 words total. I'm already freaking out.

Oi! I remember that evil number ... 1666.6667 ... better to think of 1667 words a day, or even better 1925 words a day for six days and one day off in the week, for percolation and restoration/pacifying queruous whiny social people and family, and as a safety day for whatever else may come up so that you don't feel as if you've blown it and can't recover.

That sorta worked for me last year, rather than going for a perfect run of 30 days (until stuff happened, sigh!)

But THIS year, is going to be the year. I swear!

So far I've seemed to manage well with the 100 words per day every week, then 10,000 on the weekends! Hurrah!

...although I don't recommend that at all... it's painful.

As to the write-ins, I think we could have some on campus and some elsewhere. I'd love to actually do some write-ins this year; I've done nano a few times now but I've never made it to an event! If no one else wants to organize, I'm crazy enough to volunteer!

What times/dates are people interested in? I'm pretty lame, so I like writing on Fridays and Saturdays. We could also do fun non-writing things if people are interested :)

Reply and let's find out what's up!

First year NaNoing, so I'd l o v e to get in on some write-ins. I live on campus, so anything here works great for me. That said, it's great to get away from the university now and again, hah.

How's the planning going, everyone? I'm freaking out hardcore, 'cause I just realized that I have two term papers for the end of the month. Oops.

Not sure I'm up to making the trek up to UBC-O ... bit of a trek. But I'll leave that open, depending on weather. However, I'd be up to trying a write-in. Never tried one of those. I'm usually the solitary sort ... even when I'm typing on my laptop at Starbucks ... hehehe.

I write for a few blogs, but am FOREVER grateful that I don't have any term papers. I remember the reams of pages I'd churn out in Social Sciences ... ugh! Doing a double honours did NOT have its perks ... lol. So good luck with that, Jack.

My hope is for about 2,000 words a day. This way if I write a little less some days, such as right now as I sit here with a head that feels like cotton candy due to this stupid cold ... then I'll still be well within the 50,000 word requirement.

Most of the articles I work on are a minimum of 400 - 800 words and those can be turned out relatively painlessly in an hour or so. So, under 2,000 shouldn't be too tough. Remember, they're not looking for edited manuscript ... but simply a first draft.

BTW, Jack, any way you can change the topic heading to Kelowna and/or UBC O ... seems that the majority here are going to UBC O and the title as it stands may be misleading to other 'more mature' writers. I almost didn't click on it myself as I don't go to UBC O, but only my insane curiosity led me here ... just a thought.

Fyre, I unfortunately can't change the topic heading. I specifically included the "& UBC O" because the campus is a bot of a transportation hub. I know that some of my friends drive down from Vernon every day, for example, so I thought it was a way of including those people should they be in the Kelowna area when a write-in occurs.

No worries, Jack ... 'twas only a thought. I had no problem understanding what you meant. Just totally flabbergasted ... nay bewildered ... nay perplexed ... that regions smaller than Kelowna have more people involved in NaNoWriMo. I know there are many writers out this way. Perhaps they just wish to remain incognito.

I'm one of those Kelowna writers who have been lurking instead of being social. :P I've decided I'm going to be more involved this year, so, go me?

This is my fourth year doing NaNoWriMo, and I love it to a ridiculous degree. It's the one time of year when I actually manage to finish writing things. I'm graduating from high school this year, though, so we'll see how this 'writing a novel' thing goes with 'passing all my courses'.

Anyways, would love to talk with anybody from the area, feel free to email me. :)

I know exactly what you mean. University classes end the first week of December, so that means the last two weeks of November are filled with term papers, tests, and projects. I'm at the point where I think I should just compile all the essays I have to write this month into one big volume, 'cause it'd probably be 50,000 words at least, hah.

G'luck, though!

Do we know who the ML is for this region? Is that you, Jack? ... or are we flying solo this year? Enquiring minds want to know ... :-)

Well since enquiring minds need an answer there is no ML for our region this year.

I'm in the Kelowna area but not UBC Oer---got a late start, only found NaNoWriMo yesterday---had no idea for a novel but signed up anyway---went for a long walk up Knox Mountain and came back with an idea. 50,000 words---I really have some catching up to do.

Don't worry StarrsK, looks like you're off to a great start; same with lots of us! I'm just thankful all my midterms ended just before Halloween :D

As per my previous message(s), is anyone interested in doing a write-in, and are there any ideas for location? UBC-O could probably lend us a room, though I'm not sure how late we could stay, or how late anyone would want to stay. I will find that out... but in the meantime:

1. What time(s)/date(s) are people interested in? Can we possibly aim to have some write time this weekend? Sunday? Afternoon?

2. Where is easiest for people to get to? UBC-O is kind of a pain for people who don't live on campus, but it's also free, which coffee shops and other places might not be. Bean Scene downtown has a neat conference-type room, though I'm not sure if it costs to rent it, or how much coffee/etc we would have to buy.

Lend me your thoughts on those things, and I'll be back with more info later :)

I'm from Kelowna! Well, Westbank, really. But I'm so glad to see other Nano-ers from around here!

It's a pain for me (and I think most people who don't live on campus) to get to/from UBCO. Maybe somewhere a little more central as far as Write-Ins go? :)

Hi again!

So, Bean Scene, which has a conference room, is already booked except for Sunday mornings until noon, which might be a bit early for most people (let me know if I'm totally wrong there). Downtown there is also a Blenz and a Starbucks, but we can't reserve space in either of them, so if we met there, I'm not sure there would be room (depending, of course, on how many people actually come out).

Restaurants are not really laptop-friendly, and conference rooms are not free. Today I'm going to try to see about booking the Kelowna library Meeting Room, but I'll have to give you all some details later because I know absolutely nothing as of now :)

I would like to know how many people would probably try to make it out this weekend though; am I rushing this? Is there any interest at all? It would also be great to know what time(s) work for said interested people.

Thanks again!

Hey all!

I only just found out about the regions section of this, I'm so slow >.<

Anyways, if a few want to get together for a writing day I'm up for that and I have a great location!

I'm one of the owners/operators of a new art gallery (Little Shop of Artists on Ellis St) right beside the Bean Scene there. If I speak to the others I'm sure they wouldn't mind if I brought a table in and let everyone do a writing day so long as you don't mind a few customers coming through to check out the artwork. I can supply the table, and I would just suggest people bring along a folding chair or something.

I work there Tuesdays and Sunday the 15th if anyone would like a mid month writing day?

Tuesday we're 10am to 7pm, Sunday we're noon to 5pm

If anyone's interested and want's to check out the space we're having our grand opening party this Saturday, 5pm to 7pm, come on down! (Door prizes and food even!! haha)
