Another topic carried over from the unofficial forum.

MENDACIOUS adj. 1. false or untrue 2. lying or untruthful

It was used in Jane Fraser's column in the Weekend Australian yesterday: "I had promised my children years ago - obviously MENDACIOUSLY - that I would never embarrass them by dancing in public."

Of course I didn't know what it meant and had to pull out my trust Macquarie Dictionary.

It's not really a word, more of a creature but I thought it was interesting so:
My word of the day is: Selkie. I was reading a book - Love Struck by Melissa Marr last night when I came across the term.
Selkie - Noun: A creature or spirit in Scottish and Irish folklore that has the form of a seal but can also assume human form.

I was highly interested and just had to look into it more. Its given me plot ideas. *Yay*

I like Selkies, I always think they need to be used more in modern fantasy. Those mischevous horses.

My word is: Thalassocracy.

It means a country or nation that is completely dependent on it's sea for trade, ect, while the interior of the isn't neccessarily under the country's control. I've used this in my world building a lot, but a lot of people don't seem to know what I'm talking about when I mention it, so I'll put it up.

Ha, a word or two we may need next month...

'Prolix' - Tiresomely wordy.

'Sesquipedalian' - Given to the use of long words.

I stumbled across 'paralipsis' (though it appears to have a few different spellings) the other day--"mentioning by not mentioning". For example: "I shall not mention my opponent's criminal record," or something similar. :-)

I challenge everybody to put the word - insouciance - into each chapter of their novel, surreptitiously.

I like this thread! So many new words! So many ideas!

And, I have two:

1) Nix or Nixie: A water sprite with a love of music and dancing and the gift of prophecy. Lives in any fresh water, and are said to enjoy luring humans to their death but can marry and bear human children. - I'd like to see more of these in literature too

2) Ameliorate: To make or grow better; to improve.

I like that one, and I think I know how I'll be able to work it in to my work. Thanks for the inspiration!

There's a new street near me called Nix Circuit. I'll have to keep an eye out for sprites....

Add these to your tally....

Jaconet: a cotton cloth like cambric, esp. a dyed waterproof type used for poulticing.

Zugzwang: In Chess, the obligation to move in one's turn even when this move may be disadvantageous.

And, dedicated to all the Sci-Fi writers out there - Electrophoresis: the movement of colloidal particles in a fluid under the influence of an electric field.

Enjoy! :)
