Hi all!

One of the other MLs has set up a ton of regional chatrooms, and we have one!

http://maryland.chatnano.net/index.html

Follow the directions and you'll have access to the chatroom. This will be a great tool for virtual write-ins. It works - I'm there right now (though not looking as I'm doing other things like posting this message).

We do not want a chat to get in the way of writing, but I do think a virtual write-in with some word wars would be a great tool to bring distant people together.

We could set up a weekly one on the calendar, then let informal ones get posted here. We can make this a "sticky" and add it to our Headers on the Regional Info page.

If you have any other thoughts, feel free to share. If you think this is a tool you want to use, go ahead and sign up.

It might be fun to do a stroke-of-midnight virtual write-in when Oct 31 becomes Nov 1!

Thank you. We are going to try to figure it out - Jon (husband) thinks we need a plug-in for IRC because Trillian did not give us other options - only Yahoo, AIM, and ICQ. We use the free version of Trillian.

being a long time chat veteran that prefers my socializng via the net rather than in person, i am all over this!

i am going to sign up and give it a good look about...

will follow anything going on with the development and getting up/running process closely and will make any suggestions on how to facilitate a good chat experience as they occur to me...

might even be willing to be a chat hostess if one is needed since that is kinda what i do and can work a busy room relatively effectively...

and if you think of anything i can do, do not hesitate to pull me up...

I got in too late to say Hi to you - you left, but I like your novel idea Lyrra!

And new to the area is great - you meet people. I've made great friends and a writing group via NaNo write-ins!

I think this is a fabulous idea! I went and registered my nick (SN_Wolf) and I can't wait to see how this'll work out.

Anyone using a Mac for IRC should download Colloquy. It's free and the only one that works for me.

Yuutousei,

I know next to nothing about IRC too - and we don't have to!

Just follow the directions in the linked page - it walks you through what to do. It will open a chat page on a tab in your browser. You need NOTHING other than a browser! You chat right in a tab, like IM with Yahoo or AIM or ICQ. Same thing.

Trust me - just get yourself signed up. Then check your email because they send you something you copy and paste (a different password than the one you enter) - then you'll be set.

Glad people are glad we have the resource - we'll just need to figure out how we want to use it other than for casual chat.

I second Colloquy! If you don't know anything about IRC that's the app to use if you have a mac and are just interested in chatting. I like the idea of having a midnight online meet up. I won last year by the skin of my teeth. This year I want to pad my word count as much as I can in those first three days while I'm still hyped up and excited.

So, are there any specific times for the Virtual Chats/Write-Ins? I've sorta gone on every so often but I've always been the only person in the room (blasted three hour time difference!)

What time is the room generally active so I can see if I can nab some time between (and maybe during, mattering when) classes so I can talk with people from home~ I miss it 'cause I really don't know anyone from MD here (there's only a handful of us, and the closest is an upperclassie who I don't want to bother too much), especially from Waldorf/Charles County T3T

Don't forget, the stroke-of-midnight is daylight savings time fall back! So, 2:00 a.m. becomes 1:00 a.m.

We have not yet set any officially virtual write-in times. I will bring it up in the email I'm planning to send to the region soon.

I'm looking forward to that Fall Back clock thingie! As it does not happen until 2am becomes 1am, it won't hurt us with our writing - just help us!

I was thinking at midnight to do one (no clue for how long), then looking at the calendar for others.

The other thing would be to have someone to be the "Virtual Write-In Host" who would set up times to be there. Mostly so people can do word wars!

I'll have to try checking in again and make sure I've got it covered (we were fussing with getting IRC set up on Trillian for me - thank goodness I married a geek!).

Midnight chat... That would be 8 to 9 for me (give me time to lose my friends, ha ha ha). Ah, please add times soon so I can see how I can fit it in (ah, college, how you wound me. Must remember to get an easier workload or take the NaNo class next fall)

Did you guys know that California has DST too? I'm on their region boards and was like "wait, what, you guys do that!?" I'll probably be coaxed into watching horror movies with my friends in the lounge, so I'll have my laptop and notebook with me so I can just start writing "D

Funny DST story - I went to USC for college. One Sunday I went to meet a ride and no one was there. I assumed I missed them and went to the cafeteria for breakfast. It is very empty. I wandered around that day wondering what was wrong.

In the afternoon I mentioned this to some friends who started laughing and then they told me about DST. I was like, what is DST??? More laughter at the expense of this poor girl from Hawaii, which does NOT do DST.

I like how here in the East they start warning you, they put it on TV and radio, it is in your calendar... back then, not so much as a whisper about turning your clocks back.

I hate the long, dark days - I've not gotten used to them at all.

Anyway...

Ok - I'm signed in but on my husband's computer. In searching for pumpkin carving stencils I clicked on some bad sites... so my wonderful husband is working on my computer. My only current computer.

So I'll do my best to be around for the stroke of Midnight! And actually, several others just joined us...

@ceeeeg ::: We're on throughout the day - I'm up late 'cause of the time difference, but quite a few people are on it till midnight. And I know people are on by at least one pm in MD, if not earlier.

I don't have any Virtual Write-Ins on the Calendar - but if someone wanted to host one at some official time, we'd be happy to put it on the calendar.

If I think of some time when I can do it, I will do it, but in the meantime I'm happy to welcome a volunteer host or two!

Lee (who was glad to get those words written)

How would one host a virtual write in?
Just like, proctor it or something?

So, I have been in the chat quite a lot.
Suggestions I have:
-someone needs moderator priveliges. There should be witty topics, and an updating "you should be here"
-we need to see if we can get battlejesus (the bot from #nanowrimo) to move in here. He would facilitate word wars greatly.

Also, I propose a virtual write in at seven o'clock Maryland time, this Friday.

Um... 8'o clock MD time?
I'm getting out of class a bit after 7 you time, so it'll take about 15-20 min if I go back to the dorm (and I'd rather be at the dorm where I can turn on lights. It's pitch black by 5:30 =3=).
