I didn't see a topic for this, so I decided I'd start one. I have half a dozen cats. The latest I adopted just a few weeks ago. He was a stray, and I'd been feeding him all summer, and I finally decided to take him in and make him a house cat. The cold weather and the raccoon had something to do with my decision. He's a tabby with a partially white face, white big, white chest and belly, and four white mittens. He's settling in, but he still meows to go outside. He'd probably regret it. We're in the middle of a cold snap.
Yes, I guess I've reached crazy cat lady status. :-)
We can also talk about cats and literature, too. They seem to go together.

i absolutely adore cats ... but i'm currently a catless cat person :( hubby and i had to move into a studio apartment (that is: an apartment with a living room/bedroom hybrid. very small) for monetary reasons, and so i gave my cat to my parents (kind of a long story -- but it made everyone happy. except me).
strangely, though, i haven't put a cat in any of my novels.
if i had it my way, i'd have half a dozen cats, too :) the cuddling and the purring makes me so happy.

I love cats. I'm childfree (the sane kind who just doesn't want kids, not the "argh a child breathed my oxygen and now it burns like acid!" kind), and my biological clock apparently wants kittens. I just turned thirty, and babies do nothing for me, but I go into OH OOKATTA IDDLE BAYBEEE! mode over kittens or get all wistful and sad when I see one because I want a kitty so badly.
Another kitty, though, if I'm being accurate. I have a fifteen-year-old ginger cat named Jack who's just smart enough to be really, really obnoxious. For example, he's figured that yes indeed I will wake up if he tries to poke me in the eye or put his paw in my mouth while I'm asleep. And he likes to ride on people's shoulders even though he's ten or twelve pounds now. I'd have another one or two if I had my way, but he's so happy being an only cat. I guess I can wait another few years.

LOL That sounds so much like my cat, Sassy :) She's a 10-pound shoulder kitty. And her "wake mommy up" strategy consists of laying next to me on the bed, stretching her paw out, and bopping me in the nose (usually she just touches my nose). Else, she crawls up beside me and touches her cold we nose to mine. I wake up squeeling and flailing, and she purrs at the top of her lungs... I think it just amuses her no end. (Mine's a 5 or 6 yr old tortie)

I love cats. I have three, though only one is actually mine (my siblings and I each "own" one). Mine's name is Mo. He's a fat, short-haired, all-white cat who isn't supposed to be an outdoor can but he still goes out to hunt anyway. He used to have a pink nose, like most white cats, but then he seemed to get a few black specks, and they spread like a Sharpie. Now his nose is all black. My two other cats are Chip, a tuxedo (he's really fat as well), and Sweetie, a black-and-white longhaired. They're all siblings and about five years old.
I'm also trying to find an animal shelter to volunteer at so I can be near cats more often, and help them out. (:

I remember a job I worked at many years ago. A coworker's daughter brought in two kittens that they had just adopted, and she had just picked them up. I couldn't get enough of the adorable little guys. They drew quite a crowd.
Then a week or two later, another coworker's daughter brought her baby granddaughter in, and everyone went to ooh and aww over the baby. I was watching from above (kind of an indoor balcony thing) and said to someone, "I don't know why everyone's getting so excited. It's not like it's a kitten or anything." Unfortunately, my voice carried to below. The doting grandmother heard me and looked up, but we were friends, and she knew what a cat person I am, so she just smiled.

I have a somewhat small apartment, so I've imposed a limit of two cats on myself. (Although, my landlord said I could have a dozen and he wouldn't mind. He likes cats too.) One is a three-year-old male. He's mostly black (several stray white hairs in his coat, but no actual patches). He's a sweetheart, but rather shy. The other is a four-month-old tuxedo cat and she gets into everything! She's also very sweet, but not at all shy.
I've included a cat in most of my NaNo's in one capacity or another. This year, I have a cat that turns into a person. (Can you tell, I write fantasy?)

19 pounds. Wow. I have a 17 pound Maine Coon, who's the alpha cat. The new guy isn't overly large, but he's solid. My little girl cat is very light, maybe 8-9 pounds, but she's a feisty one. And she doesn't care for Mittens at all.To hear her growl, you'd think she was the size of a bobcat.

I love cats too :) "Kitty" was my first word, before "mommy" or "daddy," and we didn't even have a cat then. I've only ever had one cat, though, and she passed away last year. One of my roommates this year has really bad cat allergies, so I'm a cat person with no cat for at least a year.

I guess I can wait another few years.
I can understand that so completely. I really didn't like kids or want them, adopted a teenager and now am a grandpa with two amazing exceptions -- my grandchildren are such wonderful people as individuals that they're utterly cool, but other kids and especially babies still put me off. But show me a baby kitten and I melt like a marshmallow. They are so cute! With their teeny little claws and sharp little needle teeth, they are such cool little critters!
I got my Ari when he was six weeks old. At that age he was about 3/4 fur. He's nine and going on 15 lbs. He sleeps with me, he stomps on my chest even when I have a cold, he likes to occupy my lap. He's not a shoulder rider the way a cat I used to have was but I wouldn't mind it if he did. He's a big shaggy longhair colorpoint, a street Siamese with pale blue eyes and a tiny soft pretty voice totally at odds with his giant male cat look.
We get along great. I used to have a lot of cats but since I got Ari, the desire for multiple cats has vanished into a passionate one on one relationship. He's very much a one-man cat, very intense and attached to me and vice versa. My daughter's cat Gemini also lives in our room though, since the dogs are not allowed in here and the cat pan's in my bathroom while their food's in here. Gemini is a sweetie who loves everyone, a little tortie stray that purred her way in back when we lived in Kansas. Gemmi actually lets the kids pet her and is a tiny little seven pound mama to the household.

Mittens, my rescued stray tiger cat, slipped out the back door today and ran around the side of the house. When I found him, his fur was all bushy and he was hissing and growling at something in the bushes. I managed to pick him up and get him inside, but I was afraid he was going to turn into a whirlwind of claws and teeth and leave me shredded and red. Now he's meowing mournfully to be let outside again.

Mittens did leave me shredded and bleeding. Shadow, one of the other stray cats (or an outdoor pet) showed up on my back porch, so I went in and filled a dish to feed him. I was trying to get around Mittens to get out the door, and Mittens turned and attacked me. He bit me THROUGH the shoe and the sock and drew blood.
And I was wearing Crocs. Those are thick, plastic shoes.
I really hope he calms down and becomes a successful house cat. I can't afford to buy more shoes and socks.
It really hasn't been a good day at all.

You can definitely add me to this group! I have officially crossed the line into the crazy cat lady scenario! I have 5 cats. The oldest, Hendrix, is a 20 year old black cat who has the loudest meow you have EVER heard! It is piercing, and he loves to speak often.
Then there is Gizmo, a humongous black and white monster who, unlike Hendrix, has NO meow. This ridiculous little squeak that comes out of him is so incongruous to his monstrous size!
Then comes the two girls, Cailet and Gwen, who are from the same litter and almost got crushed in a grain elevator when they were just little babies. Luckily one of the workers there had a wife who was a vet, and we acquired these two striped kitties from them. Last but not least is Aurora (named after the disney princess of course!), who is definitely my daughters kitty! She is our only medium haired cat with the biggest bushy tail you can possibly imagine. And she likes to bite!
Hendrix pretty much stays away from the other cats, but Gizmo is the majaraja and the three girls are his harem! He pins them down, two sometimes all three at a time and cleans their ears. It is REALLY cute!
God...could I possibly gush any more over my brood of cats? Really...someone call the men in the white coats, cause this is definitely leading into crazy territory!

I adore cats too! I have a calico cat and a semi-feral orange cat has adopted me — at least for mealtimes. (Unlike the calico, he doesn't like to be petted.) The orange cat went missing last Monday when the roofers came — he has the tendency to hide whenever there is a big commotion at the house and not come back for a while. When the house was being painted, he hid under the house for nearly a week till he was weak and thin, poor thing. The calico, on the other hand, is a plump little homebody and a good girl most of the time.

I'm another cat person. Only got two of them, but they've got enough personality that it seems like more (possibly helped along by the fact they both think the dog is also a cat).
I agree with everyone who said about kittens being sweeter than babies- mind you, I even think it's sweet when my cat comes and sits on my lap even when he's just come in from the rain and is soaking wet. Not so much when he sees that my laptop's already there and tries to sit on that though... my cat's quite jealous of my laptop.

I also have two cats, about a year old each. Guen, the younger one by a week, is a pretty short-haired Calico, but she has an awful temper and hates to be picked up or loved. Zazou is a fluffy tortoiseshell, and she is the most docile cat ever. Actually, I think she thinks I'm a cat, because she sits near me and licks me. Especially when she wants attention, or she'll do that to wake me up at 3 am. She also walks all over my laptop, and sometimes sleeps on it.
I also have a 3 year old bunny named Sonja who thinks she's a cat. She even eats the cat's dry food, and Zazou washes her like a cat would wash it's kitten. It's adorable.

A little more about my cats. Scooter, Scamper, and Sparky are boys; Patches is a girl (she's a tri-colored cat). Scooter and Sparky are brothers, and they are the offspring of a cat who lives on the horsefarm where my wife and I work (well, she gets paid for what she does, and I volunteer). Their mother has been fixed, since it seemed like she was giving birth to a litter of kittens every time you blinked your eyes. Scamper and Patches are brother and sister, and they came from a neighbor who lives right next door. (Well, he and his girlfriend live upstairs. Other neighbors live downstairs.) Anyway, we got Scamper first, about two years ago.
His sister, Patches, I got almost a year ago. She and Scamper are the offspring of a real bitch of a cat (I know that's a dog term, but that's the only word that fits.) The bitch cat snarls at you, and if you get too close, she runs away. I don't know what that guy did to her, but there is something wrong. To me, he's someone who shouldn't even have cats. She is not fixed, so every time she is in heat she gets pregnant, and more litters of kittens. Anyway, the kitten (who did not have the name of Patches at the time), started coming over to my place; in other words, all she had to do was walk across the driveway, which lies between the two houses. I decided to 'capture' her (that may not be the correct term, but I can't think of another one at the moment). To make a long story short, I finally did manage to get her into my house. For the first little while all she would do is hide, mostly down in the basement, where she managed to find really good hiding places, but which I always managed to find. I talked to her a lot (yes, I talk to animals a lot... cats, horses... I hold conversations with them, one-sided, perhaps, but...), and after what seemed like ages, she began to come upstairs. When we let her out, she ran under the vans (my wife and I each have a van), but she did come back in. The guy next door said, It seems she likes it over there (at my place) better than here (at his place), so you can have her. Which made me happy, of course. Patches knows here is her home, but here is the catch. I'm the only one who can touch her, and I'm the only one who can pick her up, although I should mention that she doesn't like getting picked up. She will tolerate me for a short time, but then she wants down. If my wife or my three girls try to pet her, off she runs. But... she will accept snacks from every one. All you have to do is rattle one of those little treat bags they sell in the pet section, and all the cats come running.
Scamper used to pick on his sister a lot when she first came into our home, but lately the tables have been turning. When Scamper comes near, Patches hisses at him, and Scamper looks at me, like, What did I do? So I tell him his sister has a good memory.
Sorry about the long post, but this thread is about cats, so I thought I'd tell you a little story about my cats.

Today we found the orange semi-feral cat: he was hiding in the crawl space above the house, amidst the insulation. My brother saw the cat, and my mother lured him out with some especially succulent canned cat food. (We usually feed the cats dry cat food.) What a little brat that cat is! My mother thinks he is quite the pest, since he is not a true pet and does not like to be petted — but there are times when he will come and sleep on our beds along with Menina (our calico). Certainly Menina likes to play with him, and I think that she might have been happy that he was back in the main level of the house.
