Hi there all - Bookie here, starting up our yearly OWG NaNo thread.

Kelley herself has said she probably can't NaNo with us this year, but she'll be cheering us on over at her forum. (http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi)

How's the planning going? Getting your current projects tied up so you can NaNo with a clear conscience? Or is the new shiny idea that's supposed to be waiting for November getting in the way of everything else?

Have fun, and just remember - we're nearly there!

~Nicole/Bookie

Hi all!

My NaNo planning was mostly done months ago -- but I'll be revisiting it and fleshing it out some more during the final week of October so that it's fresh in my mind when November 1 hits.

Meanwhile, I'm progressing through my long list of pre-NaNo projects at an acceptable pace. There's been one (hopefully minor) hitch in that, when the gate which I painted was installed, a post was cut in a couple of places where I'd been told it was not going to be cut. So now those freshly cut ends need two coats of stain and one of varnish, and they're permanently fastened outside, and it's too cold outside to apply the stain. At present, Environment Canada is promising me dry and warm enough weather to finish the job on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday -- but two days ago they were saying that about today, and it's not even close to warm enough today. So we shall see.

Hi everybody!

This is my first NaNo and I'm about 1/3 done with my outline. I've done all my research and I hope to finish my outline this weekend. I'm struggling to work on my current project because I want to get started on NaNo SO BAD!!!!!!!!!

Looking forward to hanging with you all for the next few weeks!

Hello!

It would have been fun if she could have NanNo with us, but no doubt, it's awesome that she'll be cheering us on. I love her books.

I finished one project early this month, but three weeks of not working on a project wouldn't sit with me, so I started working on my next couple of projects. I hope I can quickly get back into them when NaNo is finished.

How is everyone else doing?

Hi everybody. SciFiGal here. I am almost done with my outline and my overall planning. Just decided to kill a character earlier than anticipated (insert evil laugh here). One week (one week - is that right?) left to go.

I'm here... sort of. Most days I don't feel like I have two brain cells to rub together anymore, but I really want to finish this story, so here I am. My critique group pointed out that I've got about 3 books worth of plot crammed into one right now, so I'm going to try to expand what was passed over as a minor plot point into a full novel. It gives me the room to do some character development that was lost the first time around, and to explore an interesting plot bunny that I ended up shoving in a closet last time. All I have to figure out at this point is the identity of the murderer, the motive, how it was done, and how Daisy (my human MC) solves it, all while keeping the human police out of supernatural business and convicing her fairy boss that the murder wasn't done by a human. No big, right?

This is my first nano! I've got a general basic outline going. I can't decide if I want to flesh it out more this week or just start writing on the 1st and see where it takes me. Any suggestions?

dnfuller, I find it easier in NaNo to have an outline of at least general ideas, if not a full blown outline. I usually try to get about mid-way through the main plot with a detailed novel as it makes the 50K push go a little more smoothly. That being said, just seeing where it takes you cane work out even better as you're not married to any specifics in the plot.

You don't recognize me because of my beautiful gown and glittering tiara. But I am here this year and hello to all!

SCIFIGAL!!!!

where have you been?

Anyway it's Susan Charman, aka Morgan Ashbury and I will be starting a new novel on November 1, and this novel is contracted to Siren. If I can be of any assistance to anyone, just holler.

Where I haven't been is writing. I haven't written a single word since last year's NANO and I've been rather depressed about it. I dropped completely out of the OWG and buried my head in the sand. But dammit, I'm coming back if it kills me. There are stories in my head that deserve to be written and this November will force them out of me.

Hey all,

This year I'm chomping at the bit to get going. I have more info down on paper than I ever have before.

This year I will be writing my first Vampire novel, I love vampires but have never written a story about them before.

Looking forward to hanging out here for the month of November! :D

Yey I found the thread. Just sorting out my word-count bar for the thread and then I'm about to start. This will be the 4th year in a row I've done NaNo and the first time ever I've actually fully outlined my novel before beginning. Good luck everyone :)

It's going well so far, despite the Halloween hangover. I've written more fiction today than I have over the past several months. Best of luck to everyone!

So far I've kept to my personal goal for NaNo, which is to stay ahead of the total WC goal. Granted, I'm not *much* ahead, but it's still better than falling behind, right?

Right.

How about the rest of you? Keeping up with where you want to be?

I'm doing really well this year, normally about now I am about 2k ahead, but this year I think i managed to clear out my schedule for the month lol so I can just write, only things i have to do is housework and kids, but they are all teenagers so dont need that much attention...so i am happily sailing ahead and have clocked up 33k so far :)

Well, I'm nowhere near Flid's astonishing output, but I'm very pleased so far. 7511 words as of now, and I know I can get another thousand or so in later today because I'm working on a "friendly" part of the plot. Having a deadline is really helping me focus and commit to writing.

Holy crap, flid! You're amazing! I was so proud of my 14K, but it looks so sad next to your word count. Congratulations!

I got off to a slow start this year, but was up to pace by November 3.
Then my back went out yesterday (it is quarrelsome and does that sometimes) which has made sitting at my computer not a fun thing. I tried having a whirlpool bath to help ease out some of the tension. That proved to be problematic but I will try again today, sans surfactant. Hopefully it will clear up soon. Else I'll be looking for ways to suspend my laptop over my bed so I can get my wordcount back on track.

Congrats on blasting through that first 50K so quickly flid!

Congratulations, Flid! You beat my record for the group set in 2005 which was 54,000 in 14 days.

So maybe I can repeat to you what Kelley said to me: It's national novel writing month, not national novel writing week!

For anyone who wonders, this is a truly stupendous feat by Flid. 50K in 5 days is 10K a day which is 416.6 words an hour for 24 hours, or 1000 words an hour for 10 hours! Holy fast writing, batman.

I'm dumbfounded by those of you who've finished or are close to finishing already. Wow. I had a friend describe me once as a "spasm writer," i.e. nothing would happen on the page for a while, then I'd sit down and pound out 30-page essays overnight. But I can't imagine 50,000 words in less than a week. For one thing, my kids would starve during the day until my husband got home to cook dinner for all of us. I'm taking the write-a-little-every-day approach, mostly out of necessity.

I may have inadvertently given the impression that I'm an elite athlete -- not so! I do, however, run long-distance races. I did a half-marathon on Thanksgiving Day and I have a 50-mile trail ultramarathon planned for May 2010 (the Blackfoot Ultra, near Edmonton). It's helping me keep NaNo in perspective :)

As for Demonologies, I hope to have a full draft by New Year, and then to spend a couple more months editing and getting feedback on it. Right now it's like putting primer on a wall -- it's not pretty, but it's a necessary stage. I'm finally moving the plot forward; I'm still not sure how it ends, but things are making sense so far. Susan, you'll be interested to know that today's writing task involves writing a sex scene!

Holy cow! 50-miles scares me WAY more than 50K words. You'rs nuts! : )
