This is an odd request and I don't know if anyone would be able or willing to take me up on it, but...

I am wanting to get a Netbook, but I absolutely cannot afford it without a few months of saving up, which of course doesn't help for NaNo. I was wondering if there might be someone with an "extra" one they don't use a lot who might be willing to let me borrow or even rent it for NaNo. My laptop is really clunky and heavy and it refuses to hold a charge (so much so that if I MOVE the cord it will die instantly). This makes it rather difficult to take it to cafes, though I have had to make due and deal with it and will continue to do that, but it would be great if someone could help me out :)

I don't have an extra laptop, but I can suggest an alternative.

There is a kid's toy that worked for me very well. It's called the Fly Fusion and is a computer pen that write on special dot matrix paper. The nice part is that it scans in your writing as it sees it, and can also convert it to a word document. The catch is your writing has to be fairly clear and the pen is bulky, but for $20 plus $5/per notebook it's a viable alternative. It sure beats manually transcribing your notes after a write in.

My laptop is behaving badly, so I'll be resorting to my pen again this year.

It's available at Zellers.

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, that won't work for me - my writing is barely readable to even myself LOL!!! If I can't find something that will work for me with this idea, than I'll just use my laptop. *sigh*

A late reply here but if you want a cheap techie solution you can pick up stuff on ebay for next to nothing.,

An amstrad NC100 or NC150 is about $10. This is one of the origional portable computers, it has an 80 x 5 LCD display so it's good for word processing but not much else. It takes AA batteriies and lasts 32 hours. Plus with a $5 cable you can connect it to a computer to download your novel. And it looks cool if you're a complete nerd like me.

Or there is the Atari Portfolio (what John Connor used to rob an ATM in Terminator 2) if you can find one.

You wont get them in time for Nano but for future writing it's a great option. I banged out about half of a novel on planes, trains and park benches using an NC150

Hope it helps

Gerry
