Hey guys!

We're second place for donations to nanowrimo again! which is good, but not awesome--Let's try to kick it up a bit! If everyone donates just 10 bucks (and you get the spiffy halo next to your name), we can top Seattle!

*** Please click here and donate: https://store.lettersandlight.org/donations ***

Here's some info on how OLL spends your money and inspires lots of kids and adults into writing--just think about the great impact they have on your own lives!! http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/wheredonationsgo

And if you really can't spare a couple of bucks, you can still help OLL and nanowrimo by using goodsearch or ebay: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/donatingwhenbroke

We can totally beat Seattle! Let's do it!

Shuai, thanks for bringing up this important topic! You can see the regions ranked by donations here:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/wordcount_stats?sort=desc&order=Donations

and, yep, we're in second place behind Seattle! I hear that soon there is going to be a more advanced ranking of regions, based on size or something so that the comparisons are more fair. I hope we can win in our division!

Eeep, we're still in second place. And by quite a bit. I don't know about them Seattlites, they must be best buds with Bill Gates.

:-)

Still, it's nice to see so many halos this year.

The Donation Derby has now been announced! See it here:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/contest/donation_derby

The Donation Derby is a friendly inter-regional contest to see who can raise the most money. It's broken down by region size, and since we're a big region, we're in group one, the Kodiak Bears.

Apparently the donation scoreboard will update every hour to reflect current donations, which is pretty darn awesome. Make sure that when you make a donation through the store, you enter your username (which of course is already affiliated and homed to this region, right?) so that your donation will be credited toward the South Bay total. (All donations already made have been attributed to regional totals.)

The winner in each league will be the region with the highest average increase in donations between last year and this year. The contest will close at midnight on November 30th.

Each winning region will receive these lovely prizes:
· A personalized web badge to decorate blogs and regional websites
· A personal email from Chris
· Region name on a plaque/trophy at HQ, plus photographic evidence that they’re enshrined in the HQ hall of fame
· Public acknowledgment on the site

Let's show the world that the South Bay ROCKS!

I guess things are still a bit in flux in the Donation Derby: we've moved to group 2, the Siberian Tigers. In terms of total donations, the South Bay is kicking butt. However, in order to win, we need to get highest average increase in donations between last year and this year. The fact that we rock so much every year puts us at a disadvantage for that metric, but we can still make a good showing. For a start, I want to see us move our increase from a negative to a positive number -- let's raise more than we did last year!

In overall donations, the South Bay is doing great, in 6th place right now. But we still have a negative score for the difference between this year's donations and last. Do you have a halo yet?

Uh oh, we've dropped to 7th place! If you're planning to make a donation to NaNoWriMo this month, why not go ahead and do it now? The sooner you donate, the sooner you can enjoy having a shiny halo next to your username!

The Office of Letters and Light (that's NaNoWriMo headquarters) has announced that next Tuesday, November 24, they hope to raise $100,000 through online fundraising. So if you haven't donated yet, Tuesday will be the day to do it! Look here for all the details, including the embarrassment that the staff is willing to endure if the goal is met:

It's very, very important that before you donate, you make sure you have selected the South Bay as your home region (more info) and that you enter your username when you make your donation. That way, our region gets credited with your donation and we improve our score in the Donation Derby.

I am very pleased to report that as of midnight, the South Bay has donated $565! (We had a donation total of $3300 at the start of Donation Day, and you can watch our current total rise in real time on the Regional Info tab of our forum.)

We have now raised more money than last year (per participant), giving us a positive score in the year-over-year difference on the Donation Derby scoreboard. Positive is great and what I wanted to see. Since we're consistently such an awesome region, it's unlikely we can raise enough more than last year to win in our Derby division, because we're competing against regions who aren't as accustomed to being so generous. However, if you sort the scoreboard by total donations, who's rocking Division 2? Oh yeah, baby, it's the South Bay!

Donate! It's good for the soul, and instant good karma! It doesn't have to be a huge amount--every little bit helps. Isn't the fun we all have every year doing this crazy creative thing worth ten dollars? Where else can you have fun for a month for ten bucks?

Total South Bay increase on Donation Day: $1130, bringing our total donations for the month to $4430. Wow. Nearly 20% of NaNo participants in this region have made a donation, compared to just 6% of participants of a whole. Those are some awesome numbers for the South Bay, and I am really proud of us right now!
