Hi, benning.

Good to see ya. Thanks for unlocking the door.

There's plenty of room here, so I squeezed in without any probs; and the new sign looks extra-snazzy.

Yeehah! Heh-heh-heh.

Seems like they used Lysol to scrub down the floors. It sure smells like clean slates.
Where's that piece of white paper so I can stare at it? Or maybe I should say, blank screen, which is actually the case. Guess I'll have to bring my own in. I have not the remotest idea what I can put on it. No inspiration has hit me, no lighting bolt, no great tsunami of creativity, no mountain to climb, not even a sandcastle. Oh, well, so what else is new?
I wish fountains of ideas to everyone else, and a greased pencil to fly over the paper.

Here's something I posted at Prino - our private version of Nano that runs in May each year - and still holds true. Read on:

benning at Prinowrimo wrote:
With a week to go, now is the time to get your notes together, get your outline started, think about your plot and your theme. When next Tuesday rolls around again, it will be a little late to start thinking. Think now!

If you are working a non-fiction piece you should have an outline to guide you. It is important. It is a source and foundation for you to fall back on when you falter. It's a good place to decide which areas need more weight and which are more ephemeral in your work. A biography, for instance, can get bogged down with too many personalities, and an outline will help you weed out the ones that are not pertinent to your chosen individual. An outline is truly essential.

Fiction works can often get by without an outline, though I've usually written one at some point in my own writing. If you're like me you will find your story taking off in ways you did not anticipate. When that happens, for good or bad, you'd better have a good idea where you want to go. If not you may end up with far too many loose ends. So start thinking of that outline. If you have one ready to go by next Tuesday you will be spared the problem of getting lost in your own prose.

Remember, a theme is a unifying or dominant idea, motif, etc., as in a work of art. It can be long and deep, or it can be a single idea, such as "every dog has his day."

A plot, also called storyline, is the plan, scheme, or main story of a literary or dramatic work, as a play, novel, or short story. Sort of a summary of your tale. I call them blurbs, and you can use your plot to describe your work for the book cover! Killing two birds with one stone. So Summarize your work ahead of time. That will allow you to find the theme of your work, and then expand your outline.

Questions?

Get going! Time's a-wastin'!

Now's the time to begin putting together your resources for writing. If you wait until the last moment, then this may be a difficult exercise. And it shouldn't be. What we are trying to do is write 50,000 words, not struggle to put together a plot, etc.

So, take the time now to put together a few things you will need to create a story.

    1) An Idea: Okay, it does help if you have an idea of what you mean to write about. Don't have one? Get one! May 1 [November 1st!] is far too late to start.

    2) Character List: this should be obvious, but now's the time to figure out who is who. Who's the good Guy - or Gal - and who's the bad Guy - or Gal! All the supproting cast you think you will need.

    3) Theme: What is the reader supposed to get from the story? Can be as short as a sentence, as long as a papragraph. Something to think about.

    4) Plot Line: As my Head Editor said: "The plot is a simple A to B. Your Protagonist was at point A and ends at point B. What change did this make in him? How does he grow?" Okay?

    5) World Facts: This may be someplace other than Earth, or it may be a world in the past or future. It may even be Mexico City! Wherevr it is, you need to know what the world of your novel is like. How it looks, what the weather is like, the culture, and so forth.

Anything else? Got a few more ideas to add to the list? Comment, or post, more.

Let's get ready, and see if we can launch some fantabulous writing!

G'day fellow F2K friends beyond the fringe of sanity!

There I'll be: once more unto the breach dear friends, once more! We shall close up the wall with bad grammar, and semicolons shall fall to our pens; mightier than a sword ...Charge, Chester, Charge! On Stanley on! May our fight be for ever recalled, as heroes of NaNowriMo Day

Twenty-five K , half way done!
Half way onward, half way there,
The Word Count to the left of us,
A winner badge in our dream,
ever on our screen
Into the valley of Bad Writing.
Regardless ... without a shadow off shame.
We shall scribble away!

Thank you benning. Good stuff .. let's roll!

Hi everyone.

This is my 2nd year at NaNo. I managed to finish last year, but this year I have my son's wedding bang in the middle of it so... we'll just have to see.

At least I know what I am going to write so that's one less thing to whittle about.

Last year I did it all on my lonesome. I had just taken F2K for the first time and didn't know there was a group. Now a year later it's nice to recognise familar names.

Good luck to everyone. Let the muses flow!

So, you're back! Wheeee!

Howdya like our digs? Very spacious, right?

You'll have to let us know how the wedding preparations are going, while you scribble toward 50,000 words.

Apart from the bridesmaid's dresses, which have become an enormous pain in the butt, everything is on track. Luckily I'm Mother of the Groom, so there's not so much for me to do. .. except finish these blighted dresses.

I'm sick of my house looking like a dump. There are bits of thread, and wisps of satin permanantly embedded in my carpet along with half a million pins! The kids keep complaining but, hey, if they're stoopid enough to walk around with bare feet then it's not my problem.

It's very nice in here isn't it. Did you do the decor yourself? I'm going to sit in that comfy chair in the corner, and enjoy a well earned break. I've just finished vacuuming our lounge and for once I moved the furniture!

What will you be tackling for NaNo? How's your YA Sci-Fi coming along?

"Valkyrie's Flight" is waiting for some editing. I keep thinking I need to add more to it, and just might. But for now it's resting. ;)

I'll try a pre-quel to "Benning's War" about Isaac Benning's father - Abraham - and his young life on the frontier. The French & Indian War is the focus, I guess. Brits called it The Seven Years War. ;)

It isn't a part of our history that I am familar with. Is this the war that General Wolfe was involved in or was that another skirmish? And what were we fighting for that time?

You got it. This is the one where Braddock was defeated on the way to Fort Duquesne, Wolfe took Quebec, and the Swiss officer, Bouquet, fought the incredible battle of Bushy Run.

The French & Indian War, though supposedly beginning in 1750, or thereabouts, actually began long before, with the French endlessly launching Indian raids on the English colonies.

So it was the French again!

It's interesting that dispite two devastating world wars against the Germans there is still far more rancour between the French and the English... not the British... they have an old alliance with the Scots... who also still hate us. When I say 'us' you have to understand that I personally have absolutely done nothing wrong to offend either race!

Someone said that without history there would be no wars! I have a sneaky feeling that they might be right! But then what would you write about?

Silby.

History merely records/remembers what came before. War comes also from greed, fear of the 'other', population pressure, and so on. As for the bloody French ... I don't think the English ever got over losing much of France which they claimed as their own. Once the Tudors left the Catholic Church it gave justification to French attacks against the 'heretical' English for ages.

Bloody things, wars, but fascinating, too.

And don't forget ... the English are descended from the Germans. In fact English is the most wide-spread German language spoken in the world. The French, on the other hand, are a Latin people, speaking a Latin tongue.

Germanic people eat meat; French people eat snails. Naturally they aren't fond of each other.

Okay,
Greetings Everyone!

Just arrived. Glad to see Benning is on the ball as always. :) This year is going to be a lot of fun. My NaNo team is coming together for the first time tonight. We'll be getting everyone organized to write. My daughter has decided to do this with me again. Oh yes! Does doing NaNo twice make it a family tradition?

Going to check out the good stuff they've put up for this year.

Catcha later,

Raven

It's Friday. Come Sunday morning - Saturday midnight - the clock begins, the race is on, and we dive into the quest for 50,000 words. Or more.

Are you ready? Have you made notes? Gathered your sources? Have you thought about your characters, or the world in which your tale takes place?

Get cracking! Now's the time, not next week. Hop to it!

Nano starts on Sunday!

Great Grumps!

First of all, I'd like to know where you have obtained one of those displays: Every time I've hit mine with a hammer, usually when our internet slows to a crawl (often enough) and occasionally when I want to fix my spelling, grammar or restyle my sentences (then I use a precision, jewelers hammer) ... well, it has stopped working altogether. Not that it botthers my NaNo stuff much; it's gibberish anyway. But it is becoming a mite expensive.

But I digress! NaNo is Nigh! Fright and panic! Tonight! No plot! Nor the slightest clue of what I'll do! Perhaps fifty thousand exclamation mark, properly spaced could pass as an existential remark on our modern times; an occasional question mark to illustrate the doubts about our destiny? Something cheerful to end up, maybe some $ signs, pounds and Euros too (don't print on this keyboard) - Aha! An entire Nano of punctuation marks! Shameful. Agent Tina would probably cut me off altogether (unless I sung her an ode from time to time).

Glad you're with us once more unto the breach -- And I'd be delighted to hear that classical Spanish guitar sometime! Keep well amigo. I'll be posting elsewhere, NaNo and Agent Tina and the local comisario permitting.

:)Q
