Since we decided last year to make the rhino our mascot last year, I remember someone throwing out a challenge to include one in our novels in some way.

So, here I am, challenging all my fellow D/FW Region NaNoWriMos to include a Rhinocerous in your novel. How it appears and what form it takes is up to you. Some suggestions ,might include a trip to the zoo, a statuette or carving, a big statue, a painting, a piece of jewelry, or maybe one is charging at your main character, who has to jump out of the way, spilling hot coffee all over that nice neat white shirt that he had just pressed to make it look great for the job interview he was on the way to. :D

Good luck with the challenge, and I'll see you at the finish line!

In anticipation of someone mentioning this mascot challenge, either here on the forums or at the kick off party, I already figured out how I'm including my rhino this year. I'm writing about star-fighter pilots, so one of them has the call-sign "Rhino". Easy-peasy.

Last year, my "rhino" was a bipedal species genetically engineered to be body guards for the bad guy. Think rhinos walking on their back legs, about 8 feet tall and weighing something around 2 tons. The two main guards that were always with my bad guy were creatively named "Nano" and "Rhimo".

Easy. I just have to remember to throw one in during the middle of the story; that will be my problem.

Rhino powder used in a spell. I'm writing a paranormal so it could go anywhere.

Hm. Maybe I could give one of my characters a rhino stuffed animal. I think she'd like that.

Oh, I know... I can have a stuffed Rhino found with the body of my murdered surrogate mother. Yeah, that'll work. LOL

I'd wondered about the Rhino thing. I think I've got the perfect place for one in my novel.

I most definitely know how mine is going in. I'm incorporating the story that the SciFi genre team made at the DFW kickoff party. It's gonna be awesome. Special thanks to my team mates.

I'm going to have to stretch for it this year, as my novel is set in the (more or less) modern day world, and I think a trip to the zoo is an incredibly boring thing for my characters to do (I love the zoo, but it seems like taking the easy way out, if you know what I mean).

Last year I had a time-travelling character end up at a hunting lodge in Africa that featured two massive taxidermied (is that a word?) rhinos at the door.

Powdered rhino horn was the first thing that popped into my mind, too. Now I'll have to be a little more creative...

I just added mine. It's in the form of a tramp stamp. I can't believe it just came at me. I was going to make the tattoo a butterfly, but has anyone ever seen a rhino tat? Okay, on to the next challenge.

Quote:
Nakamura called for a squadron check. “Hell Hounds, count off. Two”
“Three,” called Jason Griffin, who wore the call sign ‘Rhino’ in the squadron ready room.
“Seven,” chimed in Jones after several seconds. Four had been Hansen, and Five had been Vincent, but there was no call from Six- Hans.

And there it is, in chapter one.

I think my Dead Body (mystery/thriller/paranormal) will be found with a stuffed rhino. Or perhaps one will be left at her memorial by one of her friends.

I have two ideas for a rhino. And this is just from the past two minutes as I read through this, because I didn't know this existed! I'm actually pretty excited now, even though I STILL don't know which of my many plots I'm actually going to pursue. (All? Yes... quite possibly.)

ROFL to both of you! Thanks for the laugh! It's a pretty rough time at work (closing the books for October) so I kinda needed a laugh. :)

BTW, as for my own contribution, I haven't written in the Rhino yet, but maybe I'll cheese out like I did last year and have my MC cuddling a stuffed Rhino for comfort.
