I live right by Lakeline Mall. That north enough for ya? ;o)
Coffee and support sounds good. Plus an excuse to get away from the kiddos would be great!
Post on here time and day and I'll see if I can make it.

I'd like to attend something up here too! I love close to the Arboretum. I think I'll be much more productive if I'm around other productive people.

I live almost exactly between the Arboretum and Lakeline! We should definately have a North Austin write-in!

I live in the anderson mill area. I'm up for a gathering....Who am I kidding, I have a 3 year old son and need a place to go for some peace and quiet to write. I'm down for any place.

Okay. Let's do it. May I suggest Primo 360? It's at the corner of Jollyville and Great Hills Trail, near the Arboretum. They've got wireless, and a good number of outlets, some couches, good coffee. I think it's a great spot for writing. My other alternative would be Cupprimo's, which is in the Spicewood Springs shopping center. It's more centrally located in our area (not a huge deal, since we're all, like five minutes away from each other) and they're known for their cupcakes. I've never actually been inside, so I don't know their outlet situation, but I could scout it out tomorrow.
The other question is time. When can we meet? Weekdays? Weekday evenings? Weekends? I'm flexible during the weekdays but would prefer no weekends. Any other thoughts?

Both of those sound cool! I'm up for either!
I'm a regular time worker (8am-5pm) so nights and weekends would work best for me. I can't wait for us to schedule something. I'll put my actual vote in on Primo 360 just in case it comes to votes.

I'd like to support Cupprimo, the owners are very nice and they have WiFi if we need it, but they're very small and we'd have trouble with a group of more than four. Plus I don't know if they're open in the evening. Primo 360 is a little south for our Lakeline folks, but a straight shot down 183 makes it not too difficult. I hesitate to offer up Starbucks--but at least you know what you're going to get there. Open late and plenty of electricity for the laptops.
It sounds like evening is the best bet for everyone.
I'm going to do it Wednesday evening. Join me. Now we just need to decide on a place.

Hi! I think it's great that y'all are getting together. In case it's of use, we've got this post with some tips on how to set up a write in. We had a regular write-in last year at 360 Primo - it was a nice place.
I'm terrible at geography, so I don't know what's near everyone, but you might also check the calendar to see if there's a write-in scheduled in your neighborhood.

Wednesday it is. Do any of y'all closer to Lakeline have a problem with driving to Primo 360? And what time should we go?

I actually live in Pflugerville, but am definitely interested in participating. As for start time, I'd prefer a later time since I'm busy downtown until 7. I don't mind coming in late, however, if you all want to start earlier.

I did a drive by today and found a hitch. 360 Primo is only open until 8PM on weeknights.
Cupprimo (at Spicewood Springs Road & 183) is open until 9--but again, they only have three tables and if we get six or so we could be hunting for room).
So what I'm thinking is, if you folks who live closer to Lakeline don't mind the commute down 183---Let's meet at La Madeleine's at Great Hills Trail and 183. They're open until 10. They have plenty of room and maybe we can get the little alcove, the "meeting" room off the main dining area. And then maybe next week we can find a spot up north and move around a bit? But Let's do this Wednesday first and go from there.
So unless there are any major issues--everyone who's interested---meet me at La Madeleine's. I'll be the guy with the Mac laptop and penguin t-shirt. I'll be there about 6 pm and get a bite to eat, but I'll be there through closing, so drop buy anytime that's convenient. Come join me for coffee, support and a plethora of words.

Definitely interested in north-side-of-town meetups, and shall try to make this one. But I've not been to this La Madeleine -- could you be more specific as to location? It's not in the Arboretum, is it?
Am fond of Kirby Lane Cafe at 183 and Anderson Mill for writing sessions, especially late in the evening. But I am a night owl so the evening hours appeal to me. :)

Do they have wifi at La Madeline's?

According to hotspot.com, the Arboretum La Madeleine's has free wireless, and the quality is 4 of 5 stars. There isn't any information on outlet availablilty, so it would be worthwhile if someone could bring a surge protector with multiple outlets.

I will have a multi-outlet extension/surge protector type of electical do-hickey (maybe two) for those in need, including myself.
Yes, they have WiFi there.
The exact location is on the frontage road of Hwy 183 at the corner at Great Hills Trail on the north side of that shopping center and just before you get to Macaroni Grill. The windows of La Madeleine face 183.
Everyone is welcomed no matter what time you can make it. My personal plan is to get there about 6PM and have a bite to eat and start writing after that. I will stay until closing at 10PM, and I'll try to bring my penguin with me (he's pretty little) to sit on the table top. I should be pretty obvious, so join me.
Even if you can't write with us this week, but you have enough time for a fly-by and a high five to those who are typing away-- stop and say hi.

For those of you who missed the write-in on Wednesday, we had a hearty group of five there. Not too shabby as we ramp up for the month. We pledged to do it again this coming Wednesday the 11th. And I believe we should.
Except-- ah-hem, I will be in Philadelphia. Oops. Now don't let that stop those of you who can make it to La Madeleine's. Maybe KleenexCow will take charge and make sure we have turnout without me.
I will travel with my laptop and be there in spirit. Go NorthAustin Penguins!

Ha, my bus drops me off/picks me up across the street from La Madeline! Wednesday Nov 11th.? I'll try to show up, I don't think I have to work late - I just have to remember my netbook.
It'll be my first meetup since I moved to Austin from Silicon Valley! I'm sooo excited! Now, if I can only find my breath mints...

I'll try to get there around 6, and bring my penguin and my (pl)otter to sit on the table with, in case no one else has brought their respective accoutrements. People who made it last week - were you able to get an area away from everyone else, or how did you address getting things set up for the rest of the Wrimos?

Oh, procedural question: should I acquire a penguin to have with me at writing meetups? I can get one from the San Diego Zoo online shop.
Links to a FAQ explaining why we're "penguins" would also be most appreciated, I'm drowning in my cluelessness.

It is not necessary to bring a penguin to events. Hosts often use a penguin to help folks find them in a crowd. It's fun to have one, though.
I'm sure Silver, the Keeper of the Legend of the Penguin, explained this somewhere, but I'll be darned if I can find it, so I'll just tell you right here.
Long, long ago, when Austin was a young region, we met for a kickoff at Book People Cafe. This fabled meeting occurred in the time of the ML-dom of Threnody, in the year 2003. We were, perhaps, twelve gathered around a group of tables, talking of our plans for our NaNoNovels-to-be. All having spoken, an observant soul said: "Did you realize that two of us have just said we're having penguins in our novels?" This coincidence was much remarked upon, and all present resolved to include penguins in their novels that year.
Many other penguins have joined us since then,, and our regional challenge is to include a penguin character or mention of a penguin somewhere in our novels each year.

Thanks for the history, that's fascinating! It's going to take some work, but I'll see if I can find a way to shoehorn a penguin into the plot somewhere, if only for a cameo. Maybe a penguin-shaped cloud, or such. There has to be a way!

For all of you keeping score, I did manage abot 1800 words on the flight to Philadelphia today. Then the battery on this very old Mac PowerBook died.
I hope you all can find a way to write in on Wednesday night without me. I'll be back at the computer at La Madeleine's next week for sure.
Good Luck.
And Woolyloach--welcome to Austin. I grew up in San Jose before anyone knew what the heck a silicon was.

Ouch about the battery dying. That's one thing I love about my netbook, seven hours of writing time! Even if the keyboard leads to madness. ;-p
San Jose, cool! I lived in Sunnyvale 15 years, plenty long enough, I think!
You all have fun, I seem to have caught a cold and will be holed up at home, drinking tea, eating chicken soup, and writing when I'm not in my death-bed! Maybe next week.
