Just wanted to say good luck to everyone in the York and Leeds forum launching their annual insanity, whether it's at midnight (in a minute), or at a more sensible time in the morning.

Hope the muse is kind to us all this year.

Also adding my best wishes to everyone!

How many people have stayed awake to see midnight in? Usually it's quite a few... hope everyone's got their first lines done by now. :D

"The fires were burning behind the grates as they always did these days, arid choking clouds of smoke bellowing up from them as if to constrict the world behind the blackness and the smog."

My first line... sets the feeling for the story don't it? :)

Here at midnight too. Watched the clock and started my first words as the hour struck. Taking a tea break at 40 minutes in! I hope to do at least a couple of hours but might keep going until the morning just to celebrate the first night. Happy writing everyone :0)

600 + words in after and hour and a bit.

not bad going.

Good luck to everyone starting at a more reasonable time, and continued success to those of us who have already started!

Whew, 1775. Shall I push for at least 2k before I sleep? Well, the energy drink hasn't worn off yet...

One character introduced in the middle of a losing battle, and another introduced while committing a massacre. Cheery, huh? Since my opening line is somewhat pants, I'll share my favourite so far:

"There was nothing like a Thorra for spouting out a load of nonsense about honour and duty. There was also nothing like a Thorra for beating someone senseless when you really needed it. If they happened to be on your side, that was just a bonus."

Rightyo... 2526 words and I'm on a roll! Yes I like starting at midnight and not having to force one's self away from the computer to bed because of school the next day. Finally an agreeable year!

I'm no good late at night, so couldn't stay up until midnight like you young ones! I've started earlyish this morning instead (at 6.30). I'm hoping some nice quiet Sunday mornings will be a good time for me to get work done. Luckily for me, we have five Sundays this November!

Good luck to you all :).

Yep, best of luck to everyone! I've started a little sluggishly this morning, but I'll soon get into the rhythm of it - the first page is often one of the hardest. I think I may need more caffeine...

Erugh! Just had three very painful hours crawling my way to 1660 words! Knew i should have started at midnight when i was felling all excited and hopeful! But i had to watch tv and fall asleep believing that my excitment would still be there in the morning! Will find more words later! Please!!! Good luck to all!

Whack...
Best start I've ever made, despite the fact that I was working on the degree projects till 03:00 this morning meant that I slept till ten. Started on Nano, cleared 1700 in 2 1/2hours and went off for a walk on the sunny Swanpool beach. Really it's awful living down here in Cornwall :o) .

Good start, but good starts need to be followed up on.

Chris.

We're at number 14 on the word count scoreboard! Considering that most of the regions which have beaten us are whole countries, I think that's not bad going! I imagine the situation might change later once the people in other time zones catch up, but it seems like a good start.

I managed to get a fair bit done this morning and a bit more at the mini-write-in this afternoon. As Sunday will be most productive day, I'm going to have to work a bit harder if I'm going to reach the total. 5 Sundays of 10000 words each?

Well 790 words in and I've just sort-of killed off my MC... fortunately it's only a sort of, but it's looking pretty ropey for her at the minute!!

First timer here :-)
Well after a last minute decision to do this I was scared at how long it might take to knock out 1600 words. But lo and behold, I've flown through 1870 words in 1 hour and 12 minutes.
(I think I may have cheated by choosing to do a 'young adults' novel, which meant I can keep everything very simple.)
Anyway good luck to you all...and hopefully it will come as easy over the next 30 days!

No worries ContraryMary, if you have any problems with it let me know, now I've started using it myself, I came across a couple of bugs. I'll get it fixed up and a new version sent out.

I hit wordcount for the day this afternoon while Emily was having her nap, so everything this evening is a bonus. And I'm gonig to need a cushion, what with starting a full-time job tomorrow and having a birthday party knocking out most of Saturday for me next week. Oh, and my first line this year?

"What the hell is this supposed to be?"

Which might well turn out to be the general reaction to the novel when it's finished. : )

You're doing better than I am Magenta, I haven't hit the word count I wanted to hit today. However I'm putting that down to getting to know my main character, and the world he lives in. I'm hoping once I start having some live characters in it, the story and dialogue will flow - for now aside from one supporting character at the beginning (my antagonist), it's just been my main character and a few phone calls.

As to my opening line:

Quote:
“Listen, I donnay care if we’re ‘ere all night, right? Yur gonna tell me exactly what happened,” the detective said, spit flying out of his mouth as he shouted at Dominic.

Though I've given up accents now, they take up far too much thought, and will only be improved in the editing anyway.

Just wanted to add my good luck to everyone else's. Feeling slightly depressed at the amazing word counts some of you have already achieved - I've already lost a day as I've been speaking at a conference all weekend, and will probably lose most of tomorrow too as I'll be spending it largely on the rail network between Glasgow and home! Ah well... things can only get better!
