When I was in Dublin, the general consensus at the time was that the North of the Liffey was not as "well to do" as the south. Also that the North may or may not be safe place to be wandering late at night.
Is this still true? Are there any places in Dublin my characters should not be wandering around aimlessly (at the moment I have a couple of female characters but I could add a male character or two).
Is the South region more safe or has it gone downhill with the global recession?
Opinions welcome.
Thanks,
Lillian

As a northsider, I feel safer on the Northside. But, honestly, it's probably safer on the southside. There's pockets in both that aren't and are safe, but really, the southside is safer.

To expand on this, Finglas and Ballymun are two places I'm familiar with in the Northside that are best to avoid. Ballymun less so today, but people still don't feel safe there. Tallaght on the Southside is probably the place to avoid the most though. It's singled out as the most dangerous part in Dublin (based on the number of murders there...)

There are areas, both north and south of the river, where I would not go on my own late at night, but that is the case in most cities. One of my 'children' while at college, coming home late one night, was assaulted while waiting for a bus on Nassau Street, and that is an area I would have regarded as relatively safe. And that was about 10 years ago. There are yobs and good samaritans everywhere, so there can be good or bad experiences both sides. And I speak as a southsider!

Speaking as someone who lives in Ballymun, I feel pretty safe here. It's no worse than anywhere else, there's good and bad everywhere. I have family who live in Finglas, and they feel pretty safe there, too.
In the 1700's, the Northside was the fashionable place to live; Henrietta Street springs to mind. But when the Earl of Leinster decided to cross the Liffey to his newly built house in Kildare Street, he said "Where I go, fashion follows.". And it did.
For Ballymun and Finglas on the Northside, read Tallaght and Dolphins Barn on the Southside.

I've been in Ballymun at different times of the day and never felt especially threatened. I don't really know Finglas well. By the same token, most of Tallaght is fine.
The problem is that areas are labelled and then avoided and that breeds resentment and problems. A small number of people witha bad attitude or criminal tendencies can cause difficulties for hundreds of others who are the salt of the earth.
You know, this whole issue is a novel (or fourteen) in itself!

Tallaght isn't all bad. It's abig place and while there are some parts I wouldn't go most is ok.

The only problem with Tallaght is the football team that plays there!
Sorry, I speak as a Bohs fan :)
