I have pasted my personal Word Count Widget into the side bar on my blog, yet, I get nothing. No picture. Nada. So I pasted the code into a blog post, and when I preview, I only see the code, and no widget.
What do I need to do to get the word count widget to operate/show up?
Thanks!
Helen

I've checked that thread but it doesn't seem to answer the question. Please could someone explain what I have to cut and paste into a Blogger html widget to get a word counter on my blog? I think I'm being thick but nothing is showing up when I try and do it.

I'm sorry that it wasn't clear.
If you go to the widgets page, there is code under each block for the widgets. Since the widgets are not working, the code is not working and it will not be clear what the code is for.
Once you choose the widget you want, copy the code, which essentially is a link to an image, and paste it into a section of your blog that allows for images to appear. Once the widgets are online I can try to be more specific and show you on my own blog if that will help. But right now, no matter what code you copy, it will not do anything because the widgets are not yet enabled.

Are the widgets still not working? That would be so much more grand then my having posted the code wrong.

According to my website info only gif., jpg. or jpeg. files will be able to be used. The widget code shows a png. file, What can I do about this so I can get a functioning word count widget?

The widgets are still not working. It is likely that the issue is simply that and not anything to do with you making a mistake. if you go to the widgets page and do not see the images you will know they are still not working. Right now they show little red 'x' boxes. ----------

If your website doesn't support .png I'd be surprised. But if that is really true, then there's not really anything we can do about it with the official widgets. They are .png images and there's nothing really to change on that. Sorry.
My recommendation is, though, that you should try to put the image code onto your site once the widgets are enabled and just see if they work. .png is a rather standard format.

Thank you! Now I understand. My browser isn't showing me when images aren't loaded, so I didn't realise anything was missing from the page. I'm using a word count meter I have to update manually instead now. Thank you for your help!

Yeah, in Mozilla-Firefox it doesn't show any of the images (no red Xs or anything), so I thought that the widgets just weren't pictured on the page. Couldn't figure out why they wouldn't work on my blog. Glad to know that they're just not working yet! :)

I am glad to see this thread. I will stop beating my head against the wall this week...
Has any one of you thoughtful Wrimos been working on making a text (not image) word count call of the API (or a query) to display the word counts in a tabular form?
I am running a side word war with twenty participants, and would like to do so in an automated fashion. I can do some coding to adapt, such as place it in a BBCode extension, or hack it into a Joomla! plugin.
Thanks for all suggestions.
Am enjoying writing, good luck to all!

Thank you so much. Firefox didn't show the missing image box so I had no idea the widgets would appear on that page when they are working again. That's a great help!

While I, too, am eagerly waiting, I thought I'd leave a message here thanking the NaNoWriMo folk for making such tools and fun toys available to us! I've been doing this since 2003 and, really, this sort of nice, little "added extra" really is very kind and generous!
You guys are too kind! :)

I hate to beat a dead horse, but is there a reason the widgets are not yet enabled? I kind of rely on the shame they provide if I don't write enough each day. Without that shamethreat, I actually have a hard time focusing. If the widgets were simply not available any more, I'd at least be able to move on, but they are there and I'm finding myself very curious as to why they are there if they aren't working. If they're going to work why aren't they working now? And when will they be enabled?
Usually questions like these are met with a sparsely worded reply suggesting that said questions have already been answered. With the reply,a link to the Wordcount API problems thread is included. The thing is, that thread doesn't explain why the widgets aren't working (at least, not that I could find).
So, what's up?

I don't work for the site, but as far as I can tell from reading these boards, the reason why they're not turned on yet is because using widgets puts a LOT of pressure on a site that's currently already having problems loading for some people because there are simply so many people using it at once. Before they know for sure that the server can handle it, it would be a bad idea to enable the widgets. Because how much fun are the widgets if the site itself is completely dead and you can't even get on here to update your wordcount? I'm sure they're working on it, they're just focusing on what's the most important, and that's kinda not the widgets.
Don't quote me on it, but if that's the case it makes all kinds of sense to me. Having said all that, I definitely miss the widgets too (especially the progress report), but they'll be up when they're up.

The widgets don't work because they require some work before they're turned on.
The priority has been the other major & primary site functions. We've borne up well under record usage, but it came at a cost - there were some major issues that have sucked away the time of our tech folks.
I'm sorry we can't tell everyone precise and encouraging things.
We're hoping by Friday they'll be available.
The API is available, so if you want, just hook up with some of the other fun programmers who have created their own "widget type" features.

i just want to express my personal love for the widgets - for me they are an integral part of the nanowrimo experience. i have read other threads but none of them were totally focused on widgets! or maybe i really am stupid which is always possible of course.
i love the widgets and would humbly ask to be allowed to use them.
thank you wrimo for all your wonderful work.

I'm looking forward to see the widgets work, as I'm already addicted to clicking "my stats" ;)
I'm keeping track of my numbers on my blog by using a ticker with a cute little (plot)bunny and that's okay, but I'll be cheering when the official widget appears.
*curious*
edit to say: just noticed the alternative widget that's provided by the Write of Die page, it's awesome!

Since they're not working, does anyone know how to make a quick little bit of code to extract just the number from the word count api? Right now if I go to http://www.nanowrimo.org/wordcount_api/wc/512062 it gives my participant ID, my username and then my word count. I want to display just the word count as plain text on my blog but don't know enough html or php to do it. Right now I'm using the Write or Die one but it requires manual update of word count and I'd like something automatic.

Thanks DarknessDescends and Cybele for your responses. Both help me understand the literal why's. I suppose I'm still just confused as to how the preparations can't start before 11/1. This has been a problem previous years and remains a problem. I'm hoping for next year that folks behind the scenes can start ahead of time.
Of course, I appreciate all the hard work that goes into this site and the service it provides--it just happens that the most valuable feature, to me, is the one that gets late attention. :(
Obviously, I am still able to conjure the willpower to keep writing without the shamethreat, but it would make things a lot easier!!

If more people donated, maybe they would be able to start working earlier. It must cost a lot to hire these people, and employing them ahead of time probably costs more than the Office of Letters and Light can afford right now... especially since we're not even getting enough donations to reach the minimum target :(
I agree, it would be nice, but I can see why it's not happening.

I agree. The donation level is shameful.
In years past, when I've given gentle reminders to donate, I got incinerated by flame wars. So, here's my first and last plea of this Nano season: people, if you want this site with all the bells and whistles, help out with a donation. TANSTAAFL.
