so, your lovely mls recently received this challenge:

Quote:

Hello from Connecticut,

I'm the ML for the Fairfield County region over here in CT, and are submitting a David vs. Goliath word war challenge.

Your region's average word count vs. my region's average word count. I say average word count, as my region's member count isn't even in the triple digits, while yours is in the quadruple digits. But when given the choice of who to challenge, they said Texas, and here I am on their behalf.

well, not only is everything bigger in texas, but it's better too, so we have accepted this challenge as a little extra push to keep us all going. we'll update you weekly, but it's up to all of us to stay on schedule and show those northern fools that the saying is true - don't mess with texas!

To mangle a movie quote:
"Their ego is writing checks their word count won't cash."

Alright Rhinos, let's crash their party. Show those damn-yankees* what an "AVERAGE" word count is!

Bring it indeed!!! What do we need to do? I'm new to NaNo so I'm not sure if this is just common knowledge or what. But my enthusiasm makes up for my lack of experience! Go TEXAS!!!

Michelle, we all need to turn in word counts as high as possible. We're a big area with lots of members, so statistically, we are going to have a large number of members who for some reason don't get to finish, quit early on, or don't end up competing. So, it falls on those of us who ARE actively competing to pick up the slack.

If everyone who is active shoots for a higher word count than just 50K, say 55 or even 60K, that will pick up our numbers.

I wanna see LOTS of purple bars with high numbers November 30th!

Last year, I finished my book before I hit 50K so I had to struggle with adding extra scenes here and there to JUST hit the 50K mark in order to win. LOL

Let's hope I have better success this year to allow me to exceed my bumblings last year. :)

I'm always game to show up yankees. But they DO have an advantage with the smaller numbers, so we definitely need to pound them out. And we can. Because we. Are. Awesome.

Oh shoot, I should be writing!

I'm shooting for 90K, not just the required 50K. While I didn't get a great start today, I plan to make up for that in the next few days. Its definitely a reasonable goal for me. During my normal writing, I generally write more than 2K a day, so 90K is only an extra 1K each day.

I'd love it if others push for a similar goal. Lets show those Connecticuters (Connecticutians? Connectians? WTH?) how we roll in Tejas.

Woohoo! I am so excited about this, just another reason for me to write endlessly.

Does anyone know how many people we have shooting for 100K? Or how many they have aiming for the same goal? It seemed like a lot more than last year to me. Just wondering if that could significantly help us.

I know Gradyp is shooting for 100K. He told me this yesterday (checks, yes, it's after midnight now) at the Midnight Write-In. I'm aiming for 50K done and gone on or by the NOWD, and I'm shooting for another 10k or better beyond that for the first draft. And if I still haven't finished the tale I'm telling, I'll keep on writing!

Muahahahahaha, I love this.

I'm trying to add their word count to our header so we can keep tabs on them more easily, but the changes aren't sticking. There's some kind of bug right now so MLs can't do anything to headers. But! As soon as it is fixed, there will be a widget to show exactly how hard we're stampeding over them :D

(And any Connecticutters that are snooping around in here: First off, Hi! Secondly, we Rhinos stomp out of love.)

Not knowing where my book will end my minimal word count goal is 50K, but as they say, the sky's the limit!

I'm going with the same writing schedule I did last year and that's 2 hours in the morning before work and 1 hour of writing during lunch breaks. Instead of stopping at 1667 a day, I'm going to push myself to write more. So far today between this morning and lunch, I've written 1930. PLUS, I'm going to a write in for a couple of hours so I'll go for 3K today. :)

I'm already where I anticipated being NEXT Sunday, and I have yet to close out my first chapter - I think it's fair to say I'll overshoot 50K if this is any indication of how it's going. I think now I'm just hoping to finish the darn thing IN November :P Regardless, I've put in about 1700 words today so far and I hadn't even anticipated having time to write today - so this is very exciting for me!!!

Question: if some of us hit the 50K early on (but are still writing) and you submit your word count on 11/27, does the site freeze your word count status or can you still update beyond that? Or do you have to wait until 11/30 at the very last minute to up your word count as high as possible before you claim your goodies?
