Hey, I was writing to see if anyone in the Kirkland area was participating this month. I'd be halfway interested in joining one of these write-ins... but the question is, would I be able to concentrate on writing?

Mike,
I'm in Kirkland. I'll probably be going to the Tuesday write-in at Panera in Redmond. Other than that, I'm open to ideas.

Re: concentration
Depends on how easily you get distracted and the specific write-in. Some are quieter than others. :) But it's worth trying one out anyway! It's worth the risk of writing a little less in order to make new (awesome) friends and perhaps get some inspiration/motivation.

Mike, Edmund, and g.c.k.,
I'm a first timer and taking things slow, but I want to try at least one write-in even if I don't produce as much as when I'm home alone. So I'm open to suggestions.

I live in Kirkland too, and I'm up for meeting when I can. I've got a full schedule with a munchkin, but I do get some time off.

I went to the Panera write-in on Tuesday evening (it's in Redmond). It was fun, but it's not for everybody. There were a number of 10- and 15-minute timed "word wars;" some people seem to like those, but I don't. I find them distracting. But, it wasn't a problem for me as I brought noise-cancelling headphones and listened to music.
Nice to be around other people, though, and everybody was friendly. The camaraderie is nice. Most of the writers were on the younger side (I'm in my 40's).
Space was comfortable. There were I think 20+ writers there; space was tight but not cramped.
I'm open to meeting up somewhere in Kirkland if people want to try that. I don't think I'm willing to host at my home, but maybe we could meet at someplace downtown. The only coffee shop I really know is Kahili, which I think could probably tolerate a small gathering (4?) without any advance notice....what do people think?

You might find more space at Terra Bite. It has a weird pricing model, so it's not often that crowded. I think there were write-ins there a few years ago even.
However, you can't beat Kahili's coffee...

New owners or something, I think they tried to do a write in there last year and it was already closed for the night!
Caffe Ladro (downtown) and Urban Coffee Lounge (Juanita) are my coffee places of choice, but I'm not sure either would be able to guarantee the space for a write-in.

I'm also in the Kirkland area, and there's a newer coffee shop in downtown called Zorka's. (At least I think that's what it's called...) I went there with a friend and it was empty, but then again, we WERE there at 7:30am on a Sunday. :) Kahili is a good place for smaller groups. They do have seating at the counter if the tables and chairs are taken.
