Not sure if anybody else has noticed / had this problem, but when I updated my Novel Info (after actually having ideas for the novel) my total wordcount was reset back to 0. This could be a bit of a thorn in the side for people who like to keep track of their daily progress, particularly if they update it further along in the month. :0 Or was it just me, and a total fluke?

I haven't seen this happen, but that doesn't mean there isn't a problem. Did you happen to put a space or anything like that into the word count validator box on the edit novel info page? Or enter a 0 in the wordcount box on the edit novel info page?

I've tried to duplicate this issue by changing my novel title/genre and I didn't see any change in my word count.

I'll keep an eye on it, as we have had strange bug in the past that would subtract one from the word count when you updated your novel info page.

I'm having word count issues as well. It measures all right for yesterday (foreword and chapter 1), but today with chapter 2, it counts about 20 words and ignores the other 1580 words!

Yes! It happened to me too! I entered my wordcount in the bar at the top-right (and yes I hit "update"), and then later when I went to fill in a bit of my Novel Info it reset the counter back to zero! I freaked out and quickly put my wordcount in again, but it was a definite scare.

Just to confirm, are you pasting the *entire* manuscript into the word count box? Or just a portion?

It's probably best to enter word counts manually if you can stand to till we get this backlog cleared out. And always double check your count before logging out for the day, just to make sure you haven't been a victim of a bug, since we can't fix previous days' counts after they've been logged.

Do you remember which bit of novel info you filled in? I've been trying to recreate this and it is not happening to me.

I have noticed this myself when wanting to enter Novel Information. Here's what I saw:

If you manually enter the word count using the form at the top-right of the page, all is well, and it shows up in your profile, etc.

If you then go to edit your novel info, the word count number in the field is 0, ie, it's not reading the previous wordcount you manually entered.

If you do nothing to the page, but edit your title, your word count is set to 0 (because the field was set to 0).

So either the word count field on the Edit Novel Info page is not reading the current word count and placing that in the field, or there's an error with it.

OK, given this set of repro steps, I am wondering if this is simply related to the site backlog we're experiencing. Since I've written virtually nothing, I've not really updated my wordcount much and so there isn't much chance for it to be out of sync. Let me see what I can uncover.

Aha, I think this is what happened with it, and it must have been some kind of syncing lag between the top-right updater and the Novel Info updater. It hasn't happened again to me, and I've updated my Novel Info since then, so probably it just didn't catch that first update. :3

I didn't have this problem, but now my word count isn't updating...it should say somewhere around 3,864 or something, but it's stuck at 2,897. Every time I enter it at the top of the page, or use the validator and hit submit, it doesn't change. Is this new, or just me?

EDIT: Oops, nevermind. Must have been a hiccup. It works again! :D

I updated my title and it wiped out my word count.

No biggie. Just annoying.

Thanks!

Same here. I just updated my novel info and went to add a buddy and where my word count shows up in her profile it said "0" but it HAD been 4227. I just updated it again manually and it's all good now....just weird how that happened.

Happened to me too. At about 8:45 this motning I updated my word count. At about 12:00 noon, I went in and updated my novel info. At that time, wy word count was reduced to 0.
I entered in an approximation of my word count again (I'll put in the exact again when I get back home if I didn't get it right from memory) and then immediately went to my novel update page again. I saw that the correct number was in the word count field there. I'm pretty sure it was zero the first time but I didn't pay attention to it because I wasn't there to change word count.

There would be an easy way to fix this. Have two separate submit buttons on that page. I doubt many people going there want to update their word count AND their novel info. It's usually one or the other. If they do want to do both, it's ot that big a deal to press submit on one before going to the other.

I've been updating my word count multiple times as I've been writing, and I looked at my stats and noticed that it was recording for tomorrow. So I changed my time zone to the correct one..and now Day 1 and Day 2 have the correct counts, but the rest until today say Day 2's count, making it look like I haven't updated at all between now and them. Any fixes?

There is no way, at this time, to edit previous days' counts. Sorry!

This happened to me too. I added a title (working title, to be exact) and my word count reverted to zero.

For me, it changes my wordcount to whatever document I just uploaded (ie, it goes from 5,111 to 1,657, where each of those two numbers is the wordcount for each of the two documents I have so far.)

Also, for my day-to-day-counts, the numbers rise and fall, varying from 1657 to 5111, and back down again. So, it would seem to me that the website isn't tallying my numbers as a whole, but just taking them piece by piece and claiming whatever the most recent number is, is what my total count is.

Should I just keep a tally of the numbers I have, and update them manually? Or is that frowned upon?

Are you uploading just the current day's writing each time? If so, that's the problem.

Always copy in the entire manuscript. The word counting always starts at 0. When you enter the total manually, you should also enter the total for the entire manuscript, not just the current day's writing.

Does that make sense?
