Terry Brooks, Author of the Shannara Series, has written over 20 bestsellers. He's not you. He's not me. But he had the same struggles when starting out.
I spoke live in person with Terry Brooks at Borders Bookstore, Henderson, Nevada a few years back, at a book-signing.
I asked him 1 question: "How did you get yourself to sit down and write all those books?"
"By the seat of my pants," he answered. The gypsy girl standing there smiled. She looked so similar to Wren, one of his characters.
"I mean really Sir, what got you to do it?" I persisted.
As he looked up at me, he gaze was distant, looking inside at a memory.
"Really?" he wanted to make sure.
"Yes."
"When I first began to write I forced myself to sit down at my desk for thirty minutes. I didn't have to write anything...just sit there for the 30 minutes. After doing this for a couple of days, I got bored with just sitting there. And then started to write. Anything that came to mind. Anything. After awhile, a week, it began to kick in."
"Wow," I replied. And I handed him my copy of "Wishsong of Shannara" to sign.
...
So if you haven't got it going, and you're a bit embarassed, I mean there are some impressive word-counts already! And this is Day #2!
I encourage you to sit down, wherever it is you like to write, and just sit there, until you get so bored with sitting there, you write something. Anything!
You really can do it.
