So I got in about 3k words since the start, and next thing I knew, I had a whole seperate plot that sounded way better than my current one. my current one for this year is a Memoir, while the one I came up with is a bit more out there, more fictionally-based, and sounded more exciting. Should I aim for this new one, being only day 2, having more confidence in it, or continue with my first one? :(

Go with whichever horse wants to run. Just DONT delete the 3K you've already written. Keep it with you in case you need those words down the line to reach 50K. Don't count them in your new total (yet), but don't delete them either. They can still count in your validated total. You wrote it for this Nanowrimo, just not in the novel you're going to finish the month out with.

December 3rd, after you've slept for 2 days straight, you can edit the 3k of memoirs out of your novel.

Since it is only day 2, I'd say go with whatever is speaking to you. That sometimes happens--and that's okay. You'll have a much easier time of writing your 50K if it is something you feel really passionate about writing, than it will be if you keep writing the current story/memoir and have to force your way through it, since you're already thinking about something else.

The same thing is happening to me! I'm writing a music-based Chick Lit novel and now I'm thinking about a supernatural/horror novel! argh!

What I'd say to that is try having fun with the idea of merging the two. Have the book start off Chick Lit, then out of nowhere, BAM! Zombie's attack the stage.

Sarah, maybe your star's manager has been manipulating her career through the black arts, and now the demon has come to collect? BAM, there's your two stories rolling into one.

I was in the exact predicament. In the midst of writing last night, I just didn't "feel" it though. I couldn't care less about my main character, the story was cheesy...I talked with Christine about it online, and decided this morning to start with a completely different plot. My opening sentences are fantastic, and I am really liking the flow so far!

Anyhow, it's only Day 2, if you decide to switch, I would say sooner rather than later. Be decisive. I agree with the others, just save the 3,000 you have already written! That's what I did with what I wrote last night. I don't like my main character, but I rather like one of the supporting characters, I may use him in a later novel. :)

Good luck!

Smart move :D

Here I was just about to say that last year, I was in the same predicament -- got 3 days into NaNo and had only written 600 words. Not 6K, but 600. Obviously, the story was going nowhere. It was a cool idea, but the execution of it was leaving much to be desired. So I switched stories. I just kept right on going, highlighting everything I had already written so I would know where the new story started in case I needed those words to make it to 50K. Once I knew I had the 50K without them, I deleted the words.

Kind of threw me off last month, though, because as I was looking through my files, I'd almost forgotten that the novel was still under the original idea's file name :-D I never changed it :-D Guess I should take care of that one of these days :D

good luck with the switch, and I'll see you at the finish line!

Grady

Okay, my boat is a little different. At the point I've got a spew of word vomit, but still no goals. I had a pretty okay murder mystery plan, but I am not a mystery writer, so it has gone nowhere...really fast. So at this point (9K) I'm thinking of just tucking this away and doing a fanfic like I always think of during NaNo.

My last year (I believe it was my last year, '07) I actually had two files that helped me make the 50k mark at the end of the month - the novel, and the scenes I had written up that had no order to them, but did go with the novel. So I just stuck them at the end and wam-bam I had 50-somethingK. I'll probably just do that with this year's 9K, since I HAVE already written them. But yeah, I can't see a seamless way of going from my novel-vomit to a fan fiction novel. Ha.
