As some of you may know, I'm also running YWP Nano for my 3rd graders this year. We had our writing kick off yesterday and wrote our first "story." (We're writing expository paragraphs about our favorite things to compile into a "short story" book.)

Well, the kids totally blew me away. We had planned and agreed on an goal of 20-30 words per story (based on what they had written in the past) and a goal of 400 words per kid. Well, yesterday before they started writing, I modeled the writing I showed them how to make their sentences more interesting (something we had not really focused on as of yet). When they went to write, those little buggers wrote upwards of 50-150 words each! Our class total of words for the day was 2,545! I was so very impressed and they were so proud of themselves!!

The funniest thing is that I challenged them that I would try to beat their word count on my own each day. So when we added up the collective word count, we all had a good laugh and wondered how in the world I was going to beat 2,545 words in one night!! They were so excited that they had already beaten my word count (and I had two extra days to write, as they liked to point out...)

Anyway, I wanted to share and update you on how the writing is going. Unfortunately, I have to be gone today for a training so they won't get to write for Nano today. =(
