Hey all, this is my first stab at this and it's going pretty well. I've been pretty much on target with words per day and pretty focused (but I did just cancel an MRI for tonight so I can reach my self-appointed goal of 10k by midnight...) So far my novel falls somewhere between the greatest works of literature and what might appear on the screen of a laptop after a gorilla played with it for a day. I've learned a lot and I'm having fun.
Do any of you live in the Astoria area, specifically near Ditmars? I have been writing at the Starbucks there and I keep seeing folks writing. I figured we could organize a casual write-in somewhere. I have friends at Igloo, a little diner at the end of the N/W line (Ditmars stop) that would probably be amendable to having us.
Anyway, if you see a large, unshaven, strikingly handsome dude with glasses and a venti bold, say hi; he may know me.

Hi Adam,
I'm your friendly neighborhood Queens ML. Did you come out to the write in on Monday? We had a dozen people at the Panera in Astoria, which is pretty crowded for a Queens event. You definitely have some NaNo-ing neighbors. We're back there each Monday, and we're at the Esparks across from the Elmhurst hospital clinic entrance for the next two Sundays. I hope to see you then.
An in at a diner sounds promising for planning a write in, casual or otherwise. If you want some help (what to ask the management, how to tell people they have to buy something, etc), just let me know. And by the way, we still need 1 Sunday location for Queens...

Hey!
Thanks for the info for the meetups. I work up there, so hopefully I can make one.
Is that the Panera next to Kaufman Studios or a different one?
Thanks!
Kate

Hi DC,
----------I'll check it out. Unfortunately Starbucks usually wants a minimum purchase agreement, when they don't charge groups for space. That's harder to do for a Queens group than a Manhattan group, since turn out is generally much lower. Maybe we just don't tell them, maybe we just show up? Hm....

If you're still looking for locations, I vote for Sunnyside, too! There's a coffee shop called The Grind, on 39th Place just south of Queens Boulevard and one block from the 40th St. stop on the 7 train. (It's sort of tucked away behind a Romanian restaurant; I think the owners are the same.) I've been to (small) meetings there and as far as I know they didn't require us to purchase anything. And I've never seen it crowded.

I've passed The Grind a few times but never gone in. I'll check it out. But I'm leery of choosing any place that's convenient to only 1 train line. Is there anything nearby besides the 7?

No other subways, but the Q32 and Q60 buses also stop a few blocks away. And it's pretty easy to transfer to the 7 from other lines -- the only problem is those blasted weekend service changes.
