Has anyone come across anything weird lately that is worthy of inserting in one's novel? For instance, I encountered a patient with a third nipple at work and I can't get the vision out of my head so it may have to work its way into my plot.

Everybody share something weird and then put it in your novel! Or steal someone else's weird story for your novel.

I have a fascination with Monty Python's Holy Grail, so in my novel I made a reference to a castle/fortress's *wooden* gate door with the carving of a large badger on it LOLOL and I think I named one of the pubs "the sleeping badger" or something like that.

alas, the work was lost with the stolen laptop. but i definitely will put those items in the attempted recreation of my work at some point.

Sneaky (and not so sneaky) references to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy keep sneaking into mine. Especially now it's science fiction, there is not stopping the H2G2 references. My goodness. It's fun, though. And there are a few references to other novels/stories of mine.

Oh, and I also referenced the monkey brains from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

So far, though, no real life weirdness has squeezed its way in yet, sadly.

When I need to be inspired to write a character with a unique and albeit strange personality I go to the webpage www.peopleofwalmart.com and see what I can find.

On Halloween, I drove out in the morning to the city of Ortonville, MN with a friend. I had decided to have that city be the setting for my story and figured I might as well know what it looks like before I start. What I didn't expect that it would be a goldmine of random things.

The first was a county museum in town. It had the standard spooky mannequins dressed in period garb standing next to coaches and the remnant farm equipment. But the best part were the two coffins on display from the 1900s. One for an adult and one for a baby, both had viewing windows to see the face of the dearly department while the casket remained sealed to keep whatever that person may have died from inside the box.

The other great thing was a ship pulled from the bottom of the lake in Ortonville (the 10th largest in Minnesota). A shipwreck happened and 17 people drowned. The odd thing? It was in July. Even odder? The lake's deepest part is only 16 feet deep.

Well, in reality, my daughter is ADHD with an obsession with Dr. Who, so I use that pretty heavily. Although I changed the ADHD into OCD (a little bit, but then so is my daughter.)

In fiction, I too have referenced Hitchhiker's Guid to the Galaxy... Earth is in "sector zed zed alpha, or something like that." And she takes a towel from her bathroom, because she read somewhere that that was a good thing to have, cause you just never know. Also with the Dr. Who references, she has a sonic screwdriver flashlight (so does my daughter) that she plays with, wishing it worked. As much as I use Dr. Who imagery, I wonder who I would have to talk to for permission to actually publish this.... that is if it turns out to be worth publishing.

I will say, I have never encountered anyone with a third nipple. That tops the weird list for me.

All of that sounds awesome. I'm jealous of your trip

Okay so I was talking with my co-workers and apparently third nipples are actually more common than one would think. I had one girl tell me her hubby has one and another girl admit that SHE has one lol.

Well, I don't know where he came from but Mr. Zambravowitz, the Filipino owner of the coffee shop with a shriveled from birth right arm, damaged during his birth, who's kind of a Merv Griffin party host, has made an appearance.

I was being sarcastic. I'm pretty sure I'd be very grossed out if I started dating someone with a third nipple.

...I knew a guy in high school who called himself "The Incredible Triple Nipple". That was a strange memory you just dragged back. Can't say I'll be using it, but there it is.
