TGIO Party Ideas

Hi all,
It's getting down to the last week and a half. That means it's time to start thinking about the "Thank God It's Over" party. Woot woot!

I, personally, am partial to pot lucks. Being the bachelor I am, home cooking is a rarity. My apartment would be available. What do people think? Got any ideas/suggestions? Let them fly.

Good luck reaching the finish line,
Jim
Frontier Write-Ins for November 23rd and 25th

In a shocking turn of events I think we should continue these write-ins.

Lets do Frontier, Monday and Wednesday on the 23rd and 25th at 6:30.

Turn out's been pretty good with at least six or so people showing up to each.

Also, what do people think about celebrating on November 30th? We could have another write-in as normal, but we could also do something a bit different with buckets of Gatorade to toss over people if they happen to cross the line that day? Or something... admittedly, I'm at work as I type this, so creativity is somewhat stifled.

----------

Anybody home?

It's been a while since anybody has made any posts or comments in here, and I was wondering where everybody is. I guess a lot of people have been going to write-ins, but for those of us who can't make many of them, it would be good to resume dialogue here.

So, how about an update on how everybody's doing? Or better yet, a short excerpt? Here's the challenge: Give us a snippet of the most recent dialogue/conversation your characters have had.

My plot has wandered away from the sports desk for the moment; two of my characters had to play hooky and go sailing. Now those two, plus the fiance of one of them, are gathered.

By the time Harry and Flash had taken the sails off the boat, rolled them, put them in their bags, and stowed them below, and Hannah had straightened up and coiled all of the lines in the cockpit, Hannah was once again feeling better. The boat was humming happily within her, and the feeling had returned to her leg. The three of them got off the boat, Flash put the cover on the boat, and he and Harry straightened out and secured the dock lines to hold Avenger securely in her slip, even if a storm blew up.

“Let me treat you guys to drinks at the yacht club,” Flash said. “I know you didn’t approve, Harry, but Hannah was a fantastic jib trimmer this afternoon. I think she deserves a reward.”

“I guess,” Harry said, clearly less than enthusiastic about the prospect.

“Just one drink,” Hannah said. “I’ll have to get up early in the morning to finish grading those papers you made me leave behind when you shanghaied me.”

“Shush,” Flash said. “Remember, I didn’t kidnap you.”

“I know,” Hannah said, grinning. “I kidnapped myself. No, wait, the boat kidnapped me!”

“I wish you wouldn’t joke about it,” Harry said, scowling. “I nearly lost my wife today, and she’s not really my wife yet.”

“That was something I wanted to talk to you about,” Flash said as they entered the yacht club, “the wedding plans.”

“You don’t want us to call it off, I hope,” Harry said.

“Oh, nothing of the sort,” Flash said. “I just didn’t like the idea of being a stand-in for the father of the bride.”

“So you want out?” Harry said as they went up the stairs to the bar. Hannah’s leg was working again, although a little awkwardly; the lower leg was flinging out sideways rather than going straight.

“Definitely not,” Flash said as they came into the bar. “I just didn’t like the idea of giving Hannah away.”

Since it was a Sunday night, the bar was nearly deserted. Hannah seated herself at a cocktail table while Harry and Flash went to the bar to order drinks. When they returned, Harry was carrying two beers, one for himself and one for Hannah, and Flash was carrying some sort of mixed drink. Hannah guessed it was probably a vodka tonic, Flash’s favorite.

“But the father of the bride traditionally gives her away,” Harry said.

“Especially after today, I just couldn’t give Hannah away,” Flash said, “even if it is just symbolic. She’s the very best raw crew I’ve ever had on the boat, and it won’t be long before she’s the best crew, period.”

“I wouldn’t want my best friend to give me away, either,” Hannah said.

“So I’ll make him an usher,” Harry said.

“But he’s my best friend,” Hannah said, “so he should be on my side. We came up with the idea that he could be maid of honor, except that he’ll be man of honor instead.”

Harry made a snorting sound, choking on his beer. Grabbing a cocktail napkin to stop the spray, he coughed a couple of times. “What man of honor would kidnap a bride to be and spirit her away on his boat and nearly get her killed?”

“So I may not exactly have the cleanest past,” Flash said. “But I can be honorable in this situation.”

“He’s already promised to keep his hands off the other bridesmaids,” Hannah said.

“But can he keep his hands off the bride?” Harry asked, frowning.

It became clear to Hannah now; Harry was jealous. His anger over her escapade on Avenger wasn’t so much about her health and safety as it was about her being with Flash, handsome, virile, charming Flash. He really would rather that Flash give Hannah away, making himself, symbolically at least, less of a rival.

Flash seemed to have sensed this as well. “Don’t worry,” he said. “My intentions are purely honorable. I want Hannah as a friend, and as crew on my boat, nothing more.”

“Can I trust you?” Harry asked.

“You can trust me,” Hannah said. “You know I wouldn’t betray you. You’re my life.” She leaned over and kissed him on the mouth, probing with her lips and tongue. At first, he resisted, keeping his mouth shut, but gradually, he softened up and allowed her tongue into his mouth. Before too long, his tongue was in action, too, and he was gently nibbling her lips. She felt that now familiar warmth growing inside her lower body, spreading to her groin. She reached out her arms and leaned into Harry, in a sort of sideways hug.

“For heaven’s sake, guys,” Flash exclaimed, laughing, “get a room!”

Frontier Write-Ins for November 16th and 18th

Frontier write-ins were well attended this week so I figure I'll sent them up for the next week. I was thinking about doing Zimmerman basement, but despite Frontier's noisiness, I think it allows for more people to join us should they feel like it.

So, once again, they will be held at Frontier in the last room with the life-sized John Wayne painting you can have your picture taken with at 6:30 on November 16th and 18th.

Yeah, that's where I'm setting up NaNoWriMo camp today, since I'm on the West Side and have my car back now. Whoo-hoo.

And if no one comes, sweet, more NaNoWriMo quiet time to me. <3 Nah, just kidding. More people would kick me into writing gear.

Hey, everybody!

I hope that your word count is keeping in step with the goals. I went to the Write-in at Borders tonight, and actually got some work done.

But Kevin and I were wondering if there was anyone out there that in or close to Sandoval County that would like to get together. the meetings that are at Borders, or at UNM are actually a long way from our neighborhood. Tonight, even with no traffic, we spent 45 minutes coming home.

We would be willing to meet somewhere up here. We really like writing at the Bernalillo Flying Star, but there's also the Barnes and Nobel near Cottonwood Mall.

The most difficult thing

So I'm wondering what everyone is finding the hardest this NaNo, whether it be writing-related or environment-related.

Personally, I am wrestling with the idiocy of my peers - that's what I get for writing in a high school library, I guess.
I'm also trying to get more involved in the social aspects of NaNo this year - I went to my first write-in last night! - but paralyzing shyness does tend to be an issue there. xD

Seeing as how Nick (Plato33) and I already meet-up on Mondays and Wednesdays to pretend to be writers, I thought we could maybe schedule something semi-officially for those nights for a write-in, maybe even get a liaison to get it up in the Regional Events box.

We usually meet-up at 7 o’clock or so to write, but can do earlier I’m sure.

The only question is where. Our choices I believe are as follows:

1. Flying Star on Silver and 7th - We were here for the afternoon kick-off and I’d think it’d work fine if we had less people. Plenty of parking, not always a lot of outlets, but you should probably buy something to write here.

2. Frontier - Parking is easy enough, outlets are in decent supply in the off-hours. Buying something to write here is cheaper.

3. Zimmerman Library Basement - Very quiet, plenty of space, no purchase obligation though there is a Starbucks upstairs, and potentially study rooms. Minuses are even getting to campus and finding parking, though it would be easy enough for the UNM crowd and especially students. Though, if you’re a student on campus for a lecture until write-in time, the last thing you probably want to do is hang out in the basement of Zimmerman even later.

4. Health Sciences Library on North Campus - Parking is a little easier here since after 4 o’clock, you can park in the nearby neighborhood. I’m a graduate student so I can reserve a study room pretty easily. You won’t have to buy anything, though if you need caffeine or something, there’s nothing really nearby except the hospital.

5. R.B. Winnings - I haven’t written here, but I think the cool English Department peeps hang out here.

I didn’t list Satellite because the ones on Central are usually completely cluster-filled with undergrads.

Anyway, for people who want to make these, give me a heads up of which location sounds nice. It's currently November 4th, so our first official non-official write-in would be next week on Monday on the 9th. I'll wait for some opinions and then post a place and time.

Write in tonight, Nov. 7?

I know this is a bit short notice, but I'm thinking about doing a write in tonight at the Frontier at 8:00 or so, for those who are willing. If I don't get enough interest, however, then I'll probably just call it off and write in the silence of my apartment.
Any takers?
Nov. 6th, 6pm, Frontier, Write-in anyone?

As the title suggests, there are going to be writers in the back room of Frontier around 6pm today. These writers being me, violette812, and lolipop2.0 so far. If anyone else joins us, that'd be perfectly cool.

The only thing is, one of us HAS to be plugged in, because her computer will die instantly otherwise, so we'd have to fight over other plugs or someone would have to bring a powerstrip (sadly I forgot my obnoxious purple one at home, on the west side, soooooo).

So yeah, open write in for anyone. We really need the word count, so we'll definitely all be there.

Happy Writing,
~kysis

(and if you wonder who we are, it'll be a redhead with a little red laptop, a guy with a big dell and a Minus the Bear hoodie, and a Hawaiian with a big green laptop that's plugged in. I'll probably write NaNoWriMo on a piece of paper or something. Depends on how lazy I'm feeling... same place as the kick off was.)
----------
Writers Woes

1. I teach, teaching is hard on the nerves as it is. I had a student loose her dad this week.
2. The world I build hasnt been working because all I see is this little girl sitting on the couch in more pain than I can fathom.
3. Is it too late to write her story I wonder......
3. Nano boards deleted my previous post that was much better......

Is it to late to switch? I feel more passionate about the other story right now but it is a week in.
Writing at the Downtown Library

This Saturday I am going to get a study room at the downtown library. Then I'm going to write and write and write so I can get caught up. I'll be there around 10:30 am and will reserve the room for about 2 hours.

If anybody would like to join me you are welcome. I'll put a Nano sign up in the window just in case.

Star signs

This came up last year and was a joke topic amongst a few friends but it has come up a few times since and I would like to get other input on whether certain astrological signs are more prone to artistic traits or challenges.

A recent meet up resulted in 4 water signs, 3 earth signs and 3 fire signs with 1 air.

Anyone interested in testing the assumption? Please reply with star sign so we can gather some info on who we are writing with or against.

Cast for your Characters?

I don't know if any one else is like me but I love to think of actors who would play the characters in my stories.

This year I only know one for sure and that would be Jeremy Irons as Hyaron. Or Brant. I'd say definitely Brant because Brant seems like the type of character Jeremy would love to play. I say Hyaron because he still has that majestic look about him.

If I could talk him into dying his hair I'd go with Brant. XD His voice is perfect for him.

I think I'd have to have Matthew Gray Gubler as a character. XD Alec probably. Because he would be awesome as my Alec.

And last but not least, Jackson Rathbone as the main male character, Kyon. Yup.

How about you guys? <333 Who knows, having a face for your character actually may help your muse. I know it does mine. Try it!
Anyone use the report card?

I have one from 2008 and I think it helps a lot, just a simple Excel kinda deal that lets you map where you are in relation to where you could be and keeps your scores easier to monito but you have to enter the scores and hours manually.

Just wondering if others feel such a thing is helpful or distracting or if you have used it before at all.
Most bizarre event?

So what's the most bizarre/strange/hilarious thing that's happened in your novels so far? So far my characters have doped up an eleven year old kid on Pixy Stix so he'd crash, and then when he came to on their couch he'd peed himself and couldn't feel his feet, so the woeful MCs had to carry him to the bathroom and then scrub the couch down.

What about you guys? What's been going on in your novels?
A Compendium of Timeless Advice

Far be it from me to advise the literati of our fair forum on how to go about their craft. Rather, I presume to start a thread on more practical matters, namely, "How to go about going about your craft." The collected wit and folk wisdom I foresee may make for a fine publication in itself. Alternatively, it's just another thread for me to check incessantly for new posts.

Although I don't imagine these pearls of wisdom will all be so serious, let me assure you that my first contribution is dead serious. Really. Read this slowly so as to get the full effect of my literary devices:

1.) B A C K U P Y O U R W O R K

2.) N O W

I hope you find my words needless, but since I had a brief scare tonight I didn't want it on my conscience should a similar fate actually befall one of you.
