Las Cruces: Planning Thread

As we head into 2008, we've got a lot more time to establish things this time, so hopefully this year can be slightly more organized than last year was. :) I've already posted a preliminary ad on Craigslist (to be followed most likely by another in September and another in October) and by September I should have flyers ready to post.

I've asked HQ about the possibility of splitting Las Cruces into its own region. If NM does get split, I fully intend to stay affiliated with any other NM areas and urge others to do the same. Even if we don't, I'd suggest affiliating with El Paso, because this year we're going to be trying for at least one or two crossover activities and I'm sure Las Crucens will be welcome at El Paso meetups just as any El Pasoans (is that right?) will be welcome at ours.

No matter where you're located, if you think you might be able to make a few Las Cruces meetups, please reply to this and let me know what days/times of the week are likely to be good for you, as well as location preferences. Spirit Winds was very welcoming to us last year but other places are definite possibilities. I'd like to find at least one location with later hours *and* a decent number of outlets, although this year I intend to bring power strips to all meetings.

The El Paso ML and I have been discussing the possibility of a midnight write-in to celebrate the start of November. There's a Village Inn in El Paso which should be about a half-hour drive for us, and while I'm probably not up to an all-nighter, we can hang out and eat pie and crank out those first thousand words or so... more if anybody feels like staying up longer. :)

If you have ideas for things you'd like to do this year, let's hear them!
November is nigh! Sort of.

It's definitely getting close. Anybody still out there working on coming up with their November ideas? This year, I swear to God, my outline is going to be absolutely *done* by October 31. It's almost embarrassing, for last year, how closely the end of my outline corresponded to the point where the words stopped coming and the whole thing just turned into a slog.

I'm looking forward to a lot more prep time this year, since I'm *not* in the midst of a job search this time and I'm already confirmed as ML, so it won't be nearly so last-minute.
UNM: Tropes and English 423

This topic is designed for those of us who are trying to find each other on the web site to actually do so (you know who you are). Anyone else who wants to join is more than welcome to. We are thinking of meeting at least once a week to be mean to each other, drink coffee, and write. So, if you are interested, this is for UNM students or anyone else in Albuquerque, I guess, who or whom (I don't know which) are doing NaNoWriMo to get together and push each other to get some writing done.
Las Cruces: Off-Season Meetup

I didn't get a lot of response last time, so I'll just try it this way. I'll be at Spirit Winds on this Sunday, May 25, at 2pm to write until... whenever. If you don't know how to get there, send me a PM or an email to the address in my signature. If you intend to come but won't be there until later in the afternoon, let me know so that I'll be sure to stick around.

I'd love to hear about what awesome new projects you all are working on... or preparing to work on this fall! :)
Las Cruces: Are you rested up?

I'm presuming you've had a nice December to relax and actually catch up on everything you didn't do during November... right? :) If anybody's still out there, I'd love to get together sometime during this month, perhaps a Saturday or Sunday, for coffee and writing talk. If you're up for it, either reply to this, send me a message here or just send an email to sybbis at gmail dot com.

Remember: We only have 297 more days to get ready for NaNoWriMo 2008!

Anyone else in San Juan County?

Wouldn't you know it--only one region for all of NM ;-) There's very little in the way of arts where I live (especially in the eyes of one who grew up in central FL), and I'm just wondering if there are any other writers in my general area who are mentally disturbed enough to consider a 30-day novel. I just found out about NaNoWriMo very recently.
Albuquerque - TGIO Planning

Hello Albuquerque writers,
Upon seeing the Santa Fe TGIO thread, I got a wonderful idea of opening this thread. I'm so creative. No wonder I have cliche writing, wooden characters, and plot twists seen from a mile away. Okay, back to subject at hand. The TGIO party is "Thank God It's Over" Party held after the mad dash of November. Last year, we had a pot luck at a writer's house. Other ideas had been meeting for dinner, for coffee, etc. This year, any idea is great. Although, it needs to be an all-ages affair.

First of all, not everybody will be able to make it. So, there's no reason we can't have more than one party. More parties are always good.

Second, we'll need to establish a date and time for the event(s). Since Dec 1st through 3rd fall on a weekend, that's pretty nice.

Third, we can discuss via this forum and at write-ins as well. Tabulating votes might be difficult via this forum. So, if a consensus is formed, I encourage a writer to post the event so all will know about it.

Good luck, everybody, on the stretch run!
Jim
Santa Fe - Continuing on...

So last night at the TGIO several people expressed interest in continuing the write-ins. There are novels still to be completed, and new novels to start if you wish. And I'm up for more write-ins if people want them.

A few people have expressed a desire to switch from Wednesday evenings to another time. So lets go ahead and use either this thread here, or the similar one on the santafewrimos.org page to discuss who wants to continue with the write-ins and what times.

The best times for me are usually in the evenings, with Mondays being the most problematic. I'm open all day on Sundays if weekends are preferable.

anyway... discuss. and if you want it, we'll continue our get togethers.

Las Cruces TGIO party

Okay, Wrimos, I'm going to cook my Thanksgiving turkey tomorrow, and decided to combine it with our TGIO party, starting around fourish to fiveish in the evening. I'll be cooking turkey, stuffing and gravy, sweet potatoes, something green and a pumpkin pie. Anything you'd like to bring to supplement that will be welcome. If you have a beverage preference, bring that along, too. Support Team members are also welcome. It would be useful to have a general head count, so if you could email me for directions I'll have a clue how many to expect.

So, how's everybody doing? Have you crossed the 50K line yet?

I see that Phoenixwaller has crossed the finish line - Yaayy! Congratulations! Where's your purple bar?

What about everybody else? WIll there be anybody else posting 50k today?

Anybody truly worried they won't? Don't, you'll be fine. Just sit there and type, type, type away. There'[s nothing on TV anyway. Has anybody seen Cybele's wc?

There are always those nanoers that stay about 5 or 10k behind most of the month. It looks like they can't possibly finish by the 30th but they always surprise us.

Schnedar is one of them - how are you doing Schnedar? IMKathleen does that too - Nora? Just like Chris Baty.

I'm waaaayyyyy behind. But I'm not worried.

I'll cross the 50k line, then it's on to nanofimo. Anybody want to joine me?

What do you all say? Do we have quorum?
Santa Fe - TGIO Planning and Input thread

Hey all!

Can you believe that it's already TGIO planning time?!?!?! Wow this month can sure move fast. Hopefully everybody is doing well on word count.

So there are still a few hours left to vote for which day works best for the TGIO party. Current options are Dec. 1 and 2, and you can vote for either morning or night as well. If you have a burning desire for another day you can mention it, but right now the evening if the 1st is in the lead in the polls.

We'll be discussing the TGIO party a bit during the weekly write-in at Java Joes. I'd like to get a feel for what is the most popular way to bid November farewell.

So with that in mind, make some suggestions for the party. Is everybody looking for a casual get together or a sit down and celebrate dinner somewhere? Let me know what you're thinking, and we'll take it from there.

If you can't make it to the write in to give suggestions on the party please feel free to make them here. I'l post a new poll with the most popular suggestions in a couple of days.

Looking forward to seeing everybody's suggestions, and to seeing everybody at the party.

Hello from New England

Hi everyone. My name is Jess and I'm hoping someone here will be kind enough to tell me a little about Elephant's Butte, NM. Here's why I'm interested (besides the fantastic name): The MMC of my novel is a 30 something guy who has just lost his wife (she died in her sleep) and then lost his job. He's hit rock bottom and is trying to drink away his problems. One day he's coming out of a bar and sees that the someone has dropped a letter on the sidewalk. He picks it up intending to slip it into the mailbox on the corner but first he reads the front to see who it's addressed to and sees the name of his ex-girlfriend from high school. Sadly he's never gotten over this ex and has always secretly compared his now deceased wife to this woman. Having nothing to lose he decides to deliver the letter to her in person. She lives in Elephant's Butte, NM and he decides to drive from CT to NM. I picked this town because of the awesomeness of it's name and because it's just outside Truth or Consequences. This means that whenever he's telling anyone where he's going I can write "Elephant's Butte, its a little town right outside Truth or Consequences New Mexico" which is far more words than someplace like Phoenix Arizona. So, can anyone tell me a little about what this area of New Mexico is like? Thanks in advance for any tidbit you can provide.

Jess
Quick diversion -- writing challenge

Here's a writing challenge for those who can't meet face to face (or who can but like the exercise).

If the main event in your story (key plot point, whatever) were reported in a newspaper, how would it read? Take a break from your novel and write at least a couple of leading paragraphs for the article. Who knows; you just might be able to include the news report in your novel.

Here's how I'd report mine. If you're a regular reader of mystery novels, you will know by the end of the third paragraph that poor Gupta is being framed.

PIKERVILLE, TENN. -- Piker County Sheriff Walter Avery reported that his officers are investigating the death of former socialite Mirabelle O'Malley Grady, who was found dead Sunday morning on the grounds of the O'Malley family lake house outside Pikerville, where a family reunion was taking place.

The death was reported as "suspicious." Sheriff's officers would not report a cause of death; however, some accounts say Grady was killed with a tulwar, an East Indian short sword.

Sheriff's deputies are seeking Atlanta cab driver Gupta Singh Khalsa and Grady's granddaughter, Katherine Michelle Grady, as "persons of interest."
Well THAT was unexpected, lol

And that's why I can't write in a non-linear fashion.

Two of my characters just got together, no good reason. I think it'll add to the plot nicely, but it wasn't originally planned. Originally I thought that they'd have nothing more to do with each other than cursory interactions. I already had a couple of characters in my last book get together, so I thought I had the whole love interest angle taken care of. And then this happens, lol.

Yep, if you can't tell my story has reached the point where it tells itself.

So what have you had happen in your novels that you'd never have expected?
Santa Fe... Kickoff, write-ins, etc.

Heya Santa Fe.

So looking over the other thread I see that most of us are available in the evenings, with the most problematic being tuesday evenings.

So here's what I'm thinking...

Kickoff party: Right now (lacking any other input) I'm leaning toward the evening of Friday the 26th at Java Joes from 5:30-7. But that's open for discussion until about monday. I'd like to have KO party plans finalized by then. So if you have a burning desire for a different time or place please suggest it. We'll go with whatever works for the most people.

Halloween prep session: does anybody want one? Last minute outline frenzy? If nobody's interested that's fine, but if you are definitely leave a comment so that we can get it organized.

Write-Ins, weekly get togethers: Wednesday evenings at Java Joes (In the rodeo plaza shopping center) From 5-7 so that people can drop in according to their schedule.

TGIO Party: To be determined.

So let me know what you think. I definitely need input on the kickoff party if that's a problem, and the write ins I'd like to see as many people as possible so let me know if there are problems.

See you all soon!
