(Another) Fullerton Meeting

Once again, thanks to the generosity of our ML TSEdiot, we have a new CD of great movie music to write by. If you haven't gotten one, come to the write-in on Tuesday!

If you have, it's time to see how many of the tracks we can guess the identities of! I know only one for certain: #8 is from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Well, I know the last track too, but that's because I googled the lyrics, so I'll refrain from stating it for now to see if anyone knows it without any help. The party below will now be at the PANERA in the Tustin Legacy shopping center at Jamboree and Barranca. It is still at 8, you should still bring an excerpt if you're brave and I'll still be wearing the Brightest Shirt Ever (it can be Seen From Space!) - but it's just now at Panera. Got it? Good=)

So, if that wasn't confusing, this is for the Saturday TGIO (not to be confused with the Friday TGIO, which I shall also attend, but any excuse for a party=) - so let's get to the details!

Fiction Workshop

Hi all,

I am organizing an 8-week fiction workshop, starting probably late January or early February.

I haven't fleshed out all the details yet, but we will meet once a week, discuss an aspect of craft, and then workshop your stories or novel excerpts. Each person will get workshopped twice.

If you're interested give me your email and I will send out more information when I nail down the details.

A bit about me:

I graduated from Antioch's MFA program in 2004. I have been published in literary magazines such as the Santa Monica Review, Nimrod International, Baltimore Review, and Hunger Mountain. A couple of my stories have received Pushcart Prize nominations, one is included in the anthology You are Not Here and Other Works of Buddhist Fiction (Wisdom Publishing 2006), and I was a Fulbright Fellow in Creative Writing in Vietnam last year.

In addition to these highlights, I failed miserably in my first novel attempt, but this year's NaNo has inspired me to love writing again.

Congratulations to everyone -- I will try to make the get together tomorrow.

Wrong Time Zone?

So based on the new message on the front page, I decided to check my time zone setting just to make sure. And it was set to GMT-7:00. But that's not right, is it? Isn't PST GMT-8:00? Looking at our events calendar, they all say -7:00 also. Maybe I'm just completely confused-- this is the last day of NaNo, after all, and math is admittedly not my forte-- but it kind of makes sense. I've been wondering all month why, when I updated my word counts at 11:30 pm, they would get counted toward the next day instead of that one.

Hey fellow Orange County Nano-ers! Are you thinking of going to the regional events? If you have, I thought it would be fun to write about your experiences of going to regional events here! If you haven't, are you considering it? Why or why not?

Have you braved a write- in yet? Any other regional events? Do you recommend it?

I just braved my first one and it was surprisingly good. I went to the “Week One- Tough Base” in Old Town Orange. I suspect that a lot of writers are introverts. Still, it turns out to be fun to talk to someone who is braving a pretty crazy feat like this. Not painful, even for someone who might be shy.

It was so worthwhile to actually talk to someone else who is trying to attempt this nano thing. It was also wonderful to be able to go to a coffee house with a fellow author, talk about our novels, drink coffee and listen to ambient music and for me to pretend to be a legitimate author for a few hours. It's also cool to be in Old Town Orange. It's fun to write in a place with a little more history than... well.... other places in Orange County! I also got a surprising amount of writing done there!

So do what I did and go without knowing anyone! I did and it turned out okay! And I have to say those of us who went were nice and didn't bite at all. I highly recommend it.

South Orange Co / Weekend Write-Ins?

Are there any events planned for further south than Irvine? I live in the south county area, and I Tuesday nights are the worst possible nights for me to meet, although the location is okay. I was just wondering if there would be any coffee shop/bookstore/etc. write-ins more south in the county, or possibly during weekend afternoons (or both!)? I'd like to go to at least one event to meet the other crazy people participating in this event, but it will be difficult with only the current events planned.

Kean Coffee has Good Mojo

This Monday, Tim and I meet at Kean's coffee shop at 17th & Irvine in Newport. This is the newish coffee shop owned by the Deidrich family--small batch roasted beans, super great barristas, overall good vibe.

I knocked out almost 5K words!

If you need a high caffine writing location, I recommend it highly!

Asking people who oughta know

I have heard all sorts of stuff about the traffic in SoCal.

My query:

How long does it take to drive from Irvine to Laguna Beach, and vice versa? Does day vs. night make a difference? I really need to know about the night drive in particular (some characters I have are vampires).

Which road(s) would you use?

Please give me times like "an hour" or "ninety minutes". I have discovered that "a long time" is defined differently in different places. Where we live, 30 - 40 minutes would be a prolonged drive to our jobs. We don't live 'close' though, which is defined as an 11-mile trip (one vehicle, two jobs).

Any and all help would be appreciated!
