Rules for hosting write-ins:
1. You MUST be present at the write-in you are hosting. If for some reason you are unable to make it, please inform me, Renda, because I maintain the calendar and the boards. I need to know that you are canceling your event so I can remove it from the calendar, and you don't leave forlorn writers wondering where their fearless leader is.

2. Have fun! The best write-ins I've held and attended have been laid back, but they definitely need a leader. If you're hosting, make sure you engage everyone who attends. I always have everyone introduce themselves (to the point that it's a joke among regular write-in attendees) with the info such as: How long they have participated in NaNo, What they are writing about, What their word count is at, and What their goals are for the write-in are. I also HIGHLY recommend "Hello, My Name Is" stickers. I forget everyone's name. I'm not sure how long it took me last year to stop calling a lady named Jenn: "Mac Lady".

3. Please be patient with me if it takes me a day or two to get your event on the calendar. I'm a busy volunteer, and I promise I'll get it up on there.

4. If you have any issues, questions or problems that arise during your write-ins feel free to contact me or Amanda.

5.Please limit write-ins to two per weeknight and two at a time on weekends; one south of Seattle and one north of Seattle. Please check the events calendar when you are scheduling your write-ins. There's no need to have 4 going on one day. We should combine down and create larger and more interactive groups.

Hello Wrimos!

Can you believe it's that time again already? I am pleased to announce that this year we will be defending our regional title as the most verbose and the most generous region in NaNo land for an unbelievable FOURTH time! I am so excited!

I will be posting many threads over the next few days, but I thought I'd kick things off with this little bit of info:

KICKOFF PARTY: The region wide kickoff party will be held at Bullwinkle's/ Family Fun Center in Tukwila on Friday the 30th of October from 5:00-9:00 PM. Feel free to bring friends, family, offspring, or anyone else you feel would enjoy an evening of literary silliness. We will trade stories of NaNos past and plans for the future. We will also be loudly and proudly welcoming Renda back from the East Coast. I will be bringing along our championship trophy (yes, they really sent me one) so that everyone can get a picture with it.

PLOT DOCTORING: There is already a thread started for a North end plot doctoring workshop, and I know for a fact Renda will be holding a similar workshop on the South end. Keep your eyes peeled for her thread. If you're serious about making NaNo into a jumping off place for a career as a writer, the plotting workshops can be a real help and a huge eye opener!!!

MIDNIGHTS: As we all know, NaNo begins and ends at midnight. Every year we begin our month of literary abandon the right way: with food and coffee and friends and PRESSURE to get that first 1667 out of the way before bed. And this year it's not even a school night. A thread will be available shortly to encourage folks to gather on the 31st and get rolling!

LIVE JOURNAL: Our community on Live Journal is called hydrophobicduck. Lots of writers share their journeys throughout November over there and it's a place to get info and kill time (what's NaNo without a little procrastination, right?).

THE 2009 DUCK: The whole story of why we're the hydrophobic ducks is detailed on the LiveJournal page. Short version: we're making fun of the U of Oregon. Every year we include a duck in our novels (well, if we remember) and this year it MUST BE UPSIDE DOWN. Again, more on the duck can be found at LiveJournal in the hydrophobicduck community.

TWITTER: I will admit to being a non-tweeter, but thanks to the tech savvy among us there is a Seattle NaNo twitter. Check out the thread and join in the tweeting!

WRITE-INS: Soon a thread will pop up for folks to list any write in they plan to host. Be thinking now if you can commit to one night a week (or more) and a location. Feel free to open a thread to discuss the possibilities.

Need a Mentor, Need a Group - HELP!

As I charge through to my final 10k for this year's novel, I worry.

I worry that absolutely nothing will happen with my writing once this is over. I've been reading that every successful writer needs two things once they have a good work ethic: a mentor and a group.

My work ethic is coming along pretty nicely. I'm serious about writing and I'm concerned that I have neither of the latter things.

Are you willing/qualified to be my mentor? If so, I'd like to hear from you. If you're not sure if you're qualified, but are willing to help another writer, I want to hear from you too.

The bottom line here is, I need support. I'm willing to give as well as I get and support others too, but I'm realizing that I can't do this alone.

If there's anyone out there who feels the same, please add to this thread, add me as a buddy, send me a nanomail, or all of the above and lets work something out.

I'd love to get together regularly with any of you who are willing.

Write-Ins Mondays and Wednesdays at Barnes and Noble in Southcenter

This year, I'll be hosting a write-ins at the Starbucks next to Barnes and Noble in Southcenter. It's worked well for write-in locations in the past. It's a good central location, and we've had a ton of success there in the past.

I'll start the write-ins at 5:00 PM and run them until 10:00 PM.

I'll have a yellow duck out. Can't wait to see people there.

Is there interest in a weekend meeting at the above venue? Although, truthfully, I have not checked to be sure it's still open and/or whether there have been major changes since last year. I was thinking Sunday nights (wasn't that when we met last year?) [although for me, personally, Friday would work better], starting about 7:30 pm.

Yes, I sometimes incorporate multiple parentheticals in my writing, why do you ask?

Hi, everybody.

Another writer and I have been hosting Study Hall, a multiple-times-a-week come-and-write kind of a group for a while in Seattle ( details and schedule at http://www.meetup.com/seattle-writers-study-hall/ ) and I thought that for the month of November I would host NaNoWriMo-specific write-ins (for those who can't make the Study Hall schedule).

Now, the NaNoWriMo write-ins are the low-maintenance kind of write-ins (meaning, they're in public, relatively quiet locations, and there's no red tape to go with them)... I'm assuming there are folks who work/live in downtown Seattle or in Ballard and who can steal away for an hour or two -- so pick one or more days, one or more locations, let me know, and join us. I'll have a THIS NANOWRIMO SIGN in YELLOW to identify the table(s) in question.

In Ballard:

Late Nite Write-in at Jitters

Okay, folks. A bunch of people asked about having another late-night write-in, so I've arranged with Jitters in Bellevue/Overlake (right behind Sears) to OPEN ESPECIALLY FOR US at 10:30 p.m. Saturday November 21 and serve us coffee and other caffeine until 1:30 a.m.

Megan, the manager, will serve espresso, drip coffee, hot cocoa, and tea. She won't be starting up the Granita machine because of the cleaning and setup time. We'll work on having some snacks for the party as well. WiFi is also available.

We're trying to do this on a "two-drink minimum per person." For most drinks, that will come to about $6.00.

In order to make this work, I'll need to show Megan that there will be enough people attending to make it worth opening up in the middle of the night. (Jitters closes at 6:30 on Saturdays, so this is a private party for NaNo writers.) We can accommodate about 40 people at a time, and it will be cozy. There may even be some cool new prizes for everyone who does something cool. (Let me think... finish the 50k? I'll come up with something!)

I hosted a couple write-ins in 2007, but only two people came. I haven't heard of anyone since. I can't plan any regular write-ins this year (due to massive amounts of work that is NOT NaNoWriMo), but if people are interested, maybe we could try for one or two big ones?

There is also free WiFi.

The space holds about 35 people, so plan to come and write furiously, dangerously, or frantically, but not complacently. (All words you might use in your novel!)

I decided to come to Online Coffee Company on Capitol Hill for a writing session because there are usually other wrimos here in the evening. Tonight I'm the only one here though (nevermind Paul just showed up)! If you have nothing to do and wanna join us for some sprints or quiet writing company, I'll be here until midnight.

The address is 1404 E Pine St, Seattle WA 98122. There is free wi-fi and plenty of outlets.

I'm here with Paul and we have a big table. Look for a girl in a red pea coat with a rubber ducky and Nanowrimo sticker on her laptop.
