Fantasy Dare Thread

Most of the other genres already have one, so we should have one too!

Have your characters go on a huge quest for a magical object
BP the quest is a sub plot, not the main plot
TBP if the object turns out to be useless because all it does is make cheese
QBP it it is actually useful because it makes cheese
Cookies if the object really helps save the day by making cheese

Subgenre Index

Fantasy is such a far-reaching label that it simply can't cover all the possibilities. Here you'll find a comprehensive listing of those who aren't writing just fantasy!

NOUN: A subcategory within a particular genre: The academic mystery is a subgenre of the mystery novel.

To have your subgenre thread added to this list, please send me an email with a LINK to the thread, and which main genre it is for (there is more than one thread like this.). Requests that do not include a link will not be added.

What shows that my MC is one of the Fates?

My story is set in a universe that is our world but with surviving elements of Greek myths (I am a big fan of Rick Riordan, by the way!). My MC is about to find out that she will become one of the Fates on her sixteenth birthday. In the story's universe, the Fates and the Furies are two opposing forces which provide balance to the world-- Fates are born into their roles and Furies choose to be what they are-- my MC's mom was also a Fate. So far two characters, one who is a Fate and one who's a Fury have approached my MC and made cryptic "I know what you are" comments.

Of course, by doing that I've written myself into a corner because I haven't figured out HOW those two recognize her as one of the Fates. I don't want to do a "special eye color" thing, maybe a birthmark that all the Fates have but which wouldn't be obviously strange to the untrained eye? Anyone have any creative suggestions?

Questions for my story!

1. does anyone know or know where I can find out (besides wikipedia and google) about pre Renaissance dances?

2. would a sward meant for a woman need to be lighter than one meant for a man? would it affect their fighting?

I most likely will have more but I don't know what they are at the moment.

I Lost all my creativity!!!! Anyone want to help me name these creatures???

So I've been writing along in the groove when I came to a gigantic brick wall. I made up these creatures but for the life of me I cannot think of what to call them! My description is not as well as I would have liked, but I was typing fast at the time to just get all my ideas out at once. So if you have any suggestions I would love to hear them!

Quote:
It was an ancient being that even the human historians had long since forgotten. It emerged into the moonlit clearing around the pond, its great head bobbing with each step. It could have been mistaken for a large elk if not for its delicate build and icy white coat. Great horns sat atop a gently sculpted head in curved points to either side. Great, gentle eyes peered at Hydrangea when they stood facing each other. The creature huffed softly and walked steadily closer placing small, delicate cleft hooves in the grass with near silence until it came to a stop beside her.

How would you quell rumors about your landlord who may be a vampire?

Hey, guys. Okay, so this is really a very minor point in the story but it's good for humor spots if I run out of ideas for plot-progressing narration. Basically, my MC Gertrude rents a room in a huge, old fashioned house owned by a dude who may or may not be a vampire. In my head, he is, but it'll be left ambiguous to the reader. All of the townsfolk are really suspicious of him, and of course there are a bunch of vampire-related rumors floating about.

Gertrude doesn't know the truth nor does she much care, but in exchange for refuting any rumors that she comes across in conversation about town her landlord will give her free room and board. It's desperation and extreme paranoia on his part and blackmail on hers. Gertrude goes about doing this in the most embarassing ways possible.

-Telling people that he covers his mouth when he speaks to hide bad halitosis, not fangs.
-He hides his eyes with that wide-brimmed hat not to cover red vampire eyes, but to hide red-rimmed, bloodshot hangover eyes. The man's an alcoholic, obviously.
-He wears all those layers of clothing to cover up the psoriasis.

...And that's pretty much all I have so far. So, Fantasy Forum, I come to you for help. How can the cliches of vampire lore be twisted into embarassing personal problems and vices? Thank you in advance.

High School level fantasy- How do I write slightly beneath my age group?

I'm writing a strange fantasy novel who needs more help than a psychiatrist could ever provide in prescriptions, but my main concern is smudging its audience group into the high school age. I'm a college student, but I feel like that's where I'd like to aim. How do I carefully measure the maturity so it's not too mature, not too childish, and not too boring as I'm doing the balancing? Anyone else have this problem?

What skills would this person need?

My MMC is about to enter into a tournament to become second in command to my FMC, who is a Dark Lady and is trying to take over the world. He needs to win. I already have tests of physical prowess, magical prowess, tactical skill, the ability to think on his feet, and I am considering what other things I would need for him to be able to do.

Any suggestions?

Why are the squirrels sinister?

I ended my last scene with a mangy squirrel following the MCs. What could this sinister squirrel be planning?

I'm thinking he'll call his friends and they'll attack the MCs, but I can't think of anything specific for them to do, other than bite and scratch. I want something...more.
